“a great way to start your adventure in Myanmar”
Reviewed 21 November 2013

The hotel is a quiet oasis thanks to it's location in the embassy neighborhood, It is in walking distance to the Shwedegon pagoda. I have been very disappointed with Orient-Express properties in the past. This hotel, however, is the exception. The hotel exudes colonial era décor and charm. The pool and gardens are well integrated into the footprint of the resort and are very well maintained. It is very tempting to adjust your itinerary to luxuriate poolside. The service is attentive. The rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. The public spaces are decorated with paintings from local artists that are for sale and I think that many of them would appeal to a discerning collector. The food is outstanding-this is the best breakfast you will have in Myanmar. Staying at the Governor's Residence is definitely worth the splurge.

The hotel does not provide old world charm or excellent service. I almost never write reviews of hotel on trip advisor after a stay, but then again I never felt to taken for a ride by this hotel. I thought for the it was going to a remarkable experience. The only remark I have is what an utter disappointment. Before we left for our trip to Myanmar, my husband looked at the hotels where we planned to stay. He said very presciently about The Governor residence, "I think they are charging that much because they can get away with it." I disagreed. I was sure it was going to be an exceptional experience. Unfortunately, I have to admit, he was completely correct. It would have been an okay hotel at $300 a night. It should have been about $200. It's in Yangon, not Paris. It is true that most hotels in Myanmar are a bit over-priced as there are not enough to serve demand, but to pay $650, get woken up by neighbor and then the cleanings staff, no bathtub, terrible wifi (don't expect to use Skype or Google), and a fairly untrained staff--one leaves feeling taken. It is shameful. We had just come from India and the 5 star hotels there are impeccable and extremely reasonably priced. There are also better choices and Yangon that are more reasonably priced. Or wait a bit, it's already too late to see Burma before the crowds and Orient Express is going to have to make this a much more luxurious experience to charge these prices or the prices will have to come down.

Room Tip: Don't go to this hotel if you can help it, but if you do go, make sure to get a room with an ent...

Dear alinwinter

Mingala ba from Yangon and thank you for taking the time to write.

So sorry to hear that you did not enjoy yourself here at the Governors Residence, our profound apologies for being waken up early by other guests and our HK staff, this of course should not happen.

As for your comments regarding our pricing yes we are expensive and yes you may find better deals somewhere else ( such as India ) and yes it is Burma "quite unlike any other land you know about" ,while USD 650 a night with bad or no service at all is definitely nothing to write home about in New York but rather what one expects,it is a big deal here you are very right with that.

Comparing Yangon with Paris or other destinations does not really work, people travel to Burma to see the raw, unspoilt and yes backward beauty of this country that 70 years of brainless dictator ship have left behind,to find installations here that compare with the first world can not really be expected nor found.

Even so our installations may not be up to first world standards all of our Guests would strongly disagree with you that the Governors Residence has no old world charm and so do we as the Kayah Geha that was built in 1896 mostly of Teak oozes just that.

Service however can and should be expected and most people that have written here as well as ourselves would very much disagree with you that our staff is "fairly untrained", we take great pride in preparing the 200 Burmese that we employ for our 49 rooms here at the Governors Residence for whats to come, even so we are certainly not perfect we can assure you that this is the best service that you will find in the country and we are considered the top of the line benchmark when it comes to this there is no question about it.

One can always do better and we are learning every day and will continue to do so in our strive for excellence.

We have spend a considerable time talking to you during your one night stay while trying to sort out the credit card issues you had ( as well as the Internet that agreeably was slow that day) and the bare fact that our Rooms Divisions Manager spent almost an hour with you to get in touch with your bank speaks for itself we believe, this is 5 star service, should you not agree to that the fact that we waved almost 300 USD in overseas calls for you trying to contact your bank should even convince the most critical traveler.

When I myself called your room and spoke to your husband I was assured that there is "nothing else that you could do" and our understanding was just that.

Last but not least we would have loved to hear from you while here on property what we could have done to satisfy your needs and avoid now having to deal with each other via these means,we believe that we tried all possible from our side,my sincere apologies if this was not good enough.

In any case we for sure would love to see you back here one day and give us another shot to show you our improved efforts.

With best regards

Best place in Myanmar to stay. 44 rooms of elegance in tropical setting with great pool. Food was excellent and reasonably priced for nearly all travelers but pricey for Myanmar. Very quiet location in embassy area. Internet ok for myanmar but not fast. Shwedegon pagoda is one must see sight. Try a trishaw ride. Panomar restaurant was closeby and excellent. Myanmar is very poor and infrastructure is worn down by neglect. People are friendly and wonderful and helpful. Stayed in two different rooms. Deluxe garden room 501 was nice but had to keep blinds down because many passerbys could look in 1st floor unit. Moved to cheaper deluxe room 312 was nicer because on 2nd floor and could open blinds.

Room Tip: Avoid 1st floor where everybody passing by can see in your room

The Governor's Residence provides a high-quality sheltered refuge from the bustle of Yangon. Located in a quiet area not far from the National Museum and Shwe Dagon, with a lovely swimming pool and the usual amenities of a top rate hotel, the Governor's Residence is a wonderful home base for exploring a fascinating city in an extraordinary land.

Surprised at the condition of the hotel. We have stayed at Orient-Express hotels and rode their train from Singapore to Bangkok. The quality of this hotel was below the standards we have become to expect. Our room had plumbing and electrical problems after several hours of workmen in our room we asked to be moved. The food was way over priced and average. Would not recommend staying here.

A forgeous, excellent hotel. Simply beuatiful. Mostly in wood, overflow large swimming pool next to the veranda. Great breakfast at the veranda. Also place to dine. European, rather French cuisine. Compared with prices in Yangon the resaurant is simply too expensive for the quality offered. But the setting is marvelous and romantic. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. And shows much appreciated initiaves. On second floor large Myanmar curry buffet on the large balcony. At USD 42 also a bit expensive.
But overall a great stay.

We stayed for just one night. Good but not outstanding. Friendly but the front of house staff have only moderate English - unusual for this grade of hotel. Dinner was disappointing: firstly due to a communication error whereby the waiter thought we had cancelled our starters. Our starters when they arrived were not great - my wife's cerviche gave her a tummy upset; my hot terrine of mushroom and cheese was stodgy. Main course of beef was pretty ordinary. Maybe we were just unlucky. The hotel ambience is delightful and has one of the nicest pools you will find, blending in naturally with the buildings and garden. Our room was excellent. We would return if coming to Yangon again...

Dear Philip D

Mingala ba from Yangon and thank you for taking the time to write.

So sorry to hear that your stay was not as good as it should have been. As for our Front office staff and all our staff we are aware that the English skills are not yet 100 % however we are working on that and weekly English classes are being given to all employees.

With regards to our food that was not up to standard this time our sincere apologies we do pride ourselves on the quality of food and beverages and normally receive much praise for them.

We will make sure that this is addressed with the F&B team and recurrence avoided.

We would have loved to hear from you while on property to give us the chance to correct any issues that existed and are looking forward to welcome you again to the Governors residence in the future to show you first hand our Improved efforts.

Thank you and best regards
