The grounds were lush and beautiful, the pool in particular. A luxurious oasis of peace in Yangon! The rooms were perfect: modern commodities in colonial style. We loved the service in the restaurant and Susie in Guest relations always had a smile and plenty of suggestions for activites and getting around town.

Room Tip: For the views of the garden stay on the 1st or 2nd floor. We were on eth 1st floor and thought the...

Set in the quiet diplomatic quarter, this hotel offers a quiet retreat from the bustle of Yangon. The service is what distinguishes this from other hotels. The staff couldn't do enough for you - and that's not because they expected a tip. From the room facilities (kettle and movie channels), the food and concierge services (thanks to Ethan who helped with taxis and sight seeing), everything was spot on. The only thing missing was a gym. So if staying in Yangon for a few days and want spoiling you know where to stay.

A friend and I stayed at this amazing hotel overnight on return from an 8 day cruise on the Orcaella on the Ayerwaddy also owned by Orient Express. In the first place this hotel is very expensive for Myanmar but it is worth every cent. It is not just a place to stay... it is an experience in its own right and is a wonderful taste of Myanmar's colonial past. Accommodation in Yangon is still growing and changing but TGR is really the only 5star at the moment and is very small so in peak season it can be very difficult to get a room. It gives life to what is was like to live in Yangon during the period when so many of the wonderful 19th and early 20th century buildings where constructed in the city. I had a Governor's Room and it was a cool teak haven with a huge bed and lovely local art. The gardens are lush with resident peacocks and a large vegetable garden to supply fresh herbs and veges to the restaurant. It is quiet and very green with masses of local orchids and the staff are outstanding. From the cocktail drinks on the lawn to the Curry table buffet in the main restaurant it was perfect. So often hotels can disappoint and do not live up to the photos on their website....this one delivers and the photos don't actually do it justice. Yes it is expensive but I think is a not to be missed experience so you can just wallow in what it must have been like to have money and live in Rangoon in the1920s. Memorable stays are defined or ruined by the service at a great hotel.... the approach to service here is that nothing is too much trouble and it is their job to anticipate what you might need or want. I also tried the spa services and had a wonderful Thai massage. All up highly recommended as one of the world's greatest small hotels.

Room Tip: Treat yourself to a Governor's room

The staff, service level, restaurant and bar were great. The room was very nice and the pool was lovely. After a long, long flight I can't tell you how great it was to come to this oasis in the center of the city, a park-like setting, and spend several days acclimating to the big change in weather, time zone and metabolism. An excellent stay for us!

I stayed at Strand many times before I found this place. All I can say is wow! a place with so much character and charm. If you are looking for a elegant, quiet and old world charm, this is it. This hotel must be booked months in advance during tourist season.

Room Tip: ground floor rooms are better.

This small hotel is a beautiful oasis in hot and busy Yangon. The grounds and rooms are beautiful, the food very good and the service is excellent. It isn't cheap but if you can afford to treat yourself it is a wonderful place to stay.
