“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed 6 July 2014

We stayed at the Governor's Residence as we usually like the hotels in the Belmond chain, so I suppose we had very high expectations.
The hotel is beautiful, with lots of character and is an oasis of freshness and peace in Yangon.
The staff is charming, helpful and very welcoming.
However, the hotel clearly needs some refurbishing and is living on a past reputation of excellence which it no longer has.
We had chosen to stay in the family suite as we were traveling with our son and my mother. Their room amenities were minimal: the air con was barely perceptible, there were no cupboards for them to put their clothes and belongings away. So the four of us had to share the small chest of drawers and wardrobe that were in the master's bedroom.
Secondly, the common bathroom was only accessible from the master's bedroom so my mother and son had to systematically walk through our room to access the restroom -making all of us feel quite uncomfortable.
Finally, there was no cold water in the bathroom at the taps. We mentioned this to reception who sent over 2 people to attend to the problem, but they didn't seem to have any idea of what they were doing and actually did not fix it.
Concerning food, breakfast was great and plentiful, thus catering to all tastes and appetites.
However, the hotel restaurant was a major disappointment. Not that the food was not good, but it was average and very expensive for what it was [not mentioning the price of wine!!!]. Also noteworthy is the fact they do not have a kids menu.
We reported all this to management through their check out questionnaire and received an answer which, though offering us a complementary night at the hotel (which is pointless as we do not plan to go to Yangon before a while), did not really satisfy us as, at no point, did the management actually say that they were sorry about all this and simply told us that we should have reported it to staff.
All in all a disappointing experience: I can't say it was good, but I cannot say it was bad either.
However I would certainly not recommend to families.

Room Tip: Do not book the family suite!

Our guest relation team continuously checks with all our clients during their stay to assure a great experience,in addition do we invite everyone to our guest cocktail that we organize twice a week all this to make sure we are aware of any issues that may exist, we would have loved to have a chance to set things right for you while here on property.

We loved our three nights at this gorgeous and well maintained hotel in the handy diplomatic area of Yangon. One of our favourites and we can't wait to get back soon. The staff were seriously fantastic and knowledgeable about Myanmar and Yangon. Great restaurant and we loved the Mohinga in the mornings for breakfast.

The Governor's Residence is simply an oasis in a crazy city! If I went back to Yangon, I would do one day of site seeing and then spend 2-3 days lounging around the hotel - it is that nice!

We were greeted with open arms, given cold drinks and jasmine necklaces before being whisked to the room.

The rooms are wonderful! Quiet, tasteful and well appointed. Very comfortable beds and pillows. A window seat, desk area, tv area, sitting area and gorgeous bathroom.

The property - a beautiful old mansion in the embassy district. Stunning gardens, a beautiful pool and 2 resident peacocks.

The service - could not be better! No request was to much. At the pool, which is where we spent most of our time the lovely staff came right over, fixed up your chairs, got you drinks and menus with lightening speed! At meal times, the service was also superb. Room service was exceptional, we ordered a few times and by the third time we felt as though we knew the two boys who came, and they even brought us a gift from them - a truly special touch -

Food - by prepared to be wowed! The best I had in Myanmar. Each meal was delicious and well thought out. Breakfast was buffet, with warm stations, and overlooking the pool. For lunch we ate poolside, and diner either in the restaurant or room service - all terrific!

Location - the hotel is very close to the main attractions - but you should be prepared for crazy traffic at any time and keep your patience.

Do not hesitate to book this hotel - you will not regret it!

Room Tip: Upper level was nice

We stayed here a total of three nights. Two when we first arrived and our last night before leaving Myanmar. We were able to leave our additional luggage at the property and discover the rest of Myanmar with small overnight bags. In my mind, this is the only hotel to stay in. The pool was a godsend and the buffet breakfast like no other I have ever partaken in. Fabulous food especially the lemongrass creme brulee. Very kind/friendly people and excellent service. Takes one back to colonial days in style and history. A lovely, tucked away oasis in Yangon. Be sure to book a 90 minute massage treatment. Fabulous for only US$60.00!

This hotel is full of character and the staff couldn't have been more helpful...it's small, intimate and relaxing (well apart from the Mosquitos!). We stayed for a week on business and that was the only downside - nowhere to easily print reports, very patchy wifi, hardly any hanging space for clothes in the room. Also it was hot and humid in Yangon and very few of the public spaces are air conditioned. Not easy when you are suited for work. However - the food was wonderful (highly recommend the coconut soup for breakfast) and the staff delightful.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room - the wooden floors might be noisy if you have someone above you.

Dear Fiona D

Minagala ba from Yangon

Thank you for taking the time to write and let us have your feedback.

We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us at the Belmond Governors Residence and are aware of the issues you pointed out with the regards to the A/C public spaces and are working on a permanent solution for this.

As for the printing of reports we do have a small "business centre" which is more of a corner, but it does have all the facilities such as scanner, printer, copy etc etc maybe we have to point it out more prominently in the future.

Again thank you for writing and hopefully will we be able to welcome you back soon here.

With best regards

We loved staying at this beautiful hotel, which is conveniently located for sightseeing in Yangon. Our room was very well equipped and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The architecture is charming and the atmosphere is calm and peaceful. We enjoyed swimming in the large pool. The breakfast buffet provided an enormous choice of delicious dishes. We ate dinner at the hotel only one evening during our stay. The food was delicious but both the menu and the wine list were very expensive by local Yangon standards.

We stayed here at the beginning and at the end of our trip through Myanmar. What a wonderful hotel and such good staff. We needed to change our room, no problem, we left some bagage there, no problem, pick uo and drop off from the airport, no problem. Even wifi in the minibus!!

The restaurant upstairs with local food is very good. It is so good, that one would love to try everything, but I could not. The breakfast is also very good. They have very nice different fresh juice mixes!
the cocktails in the bar are great! The pool is large and the snacks very good.
We had a wonderful stay here and when we came back after our trip through Myanmar we were greeted like old friends.
We would love to come back.
