“This is probably the best hotel we've...”
Reviewed 9 September 2010

This is probably the best hotel we've ever stayed at. The rooms are designed with understated elegance, style and beauty. The gigantic bed was magic. For the first time in months I was free of my chronic back ache. We stayed at this hotel on the day we arrived in Myanmar, we then went on to enjoy a cruise on the irawaddy river...which was great! However, I could not wait to get back to the GR to have lunch and drinks by the swimming pool with my better half!

I have been exceptionally lucky in staying at many of the world's best hotels, but nowhere will give you the charm and personal experience of this hotel. The staff are among the most wonderful people I have ever known. It really has everything to offer and showcases Myanmar at its very best.
Amazing. I want to use every superlative to convey the joy of our experience.

We spent two nights at the GR at the start of our trip to Myanmar, and had a blissful time. The staff are super smily and helpful, the elegant colonial building is refined and yet comfortable, and the gardens where you can have dinner are a delight, with giant parasoles propped on their sides creating a warm glowing light. The pool is lovely, and the internet connection works! Our room was large and above all, quiet (unlike one night we had at The Strand - colonial but too stiff). We ate marvellous Asian and International food at the GR, and were truly sorry to leave.

Not cheap but worth every dollar.

Walking distance (from the Shwedagon and downtown Yangon), i.e. around 15 to 20 minutes.

Excellent service and great food

A beautiful old colonial hotel set in a tropical garden in the suburbs of Yangon. The candlelit gardens at night surrounded by glowing parasols gave an aura of romantic tranquilty. Our rose scented Garden View room had a beautiful part sunken granite bath and shower. There were luxurious toileteries in coloured glass bottles refilled daily. Bathrobes and slippers are provided. The hotel itself has been wonderfully refurbished in teak with a lovely swimming pool. There is also an ornamental fish pond with large koi carp which gives the impression of being an extension of the swimming pool. The staff can't do enough for you although their English is a bit limited on occasions. The food is wonderful, wine good but alcohol is expensive in Myanmar. We drank copious quantities of fresh lime juice and also Tiger Beer which is cheap. It is easy to get a taxi into Yangon for about US$ 5 (for 4 people). Tours of the city and sights may also be arranged. We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights from 10 - 13 Feb. 2010 and it was one of the nicest experiences we have had in our many travels. We can't speak more highly of it!

The setting, service, facilities, and dinners are without parallel. Particular credit must go to the Head Waiter who presented my wife with a Birthday Cake without me telling him. He checks passport copies as a routine.
However nothing is perfect, and we did miss having tea & coffee facilities in the room. This is standard in 4 & 5 Star hotels. If there is a problem with this, then a freeflow facility in the upstairs lounge would suffice.
