“Traders Hotel February 2013”
Reviewed 21 February 2013

I stayed at Traders Hotel for three days in February 2013. My last trip there was a year and a half ago. Although the hotel is currently undergoing renovation and the building of an extension the work was limited to the daytime and for the most part was carried out unobtrusively. The Club Room had been upgraded since my last visit and are now nicely decorated. The Club Lounge is also under renovation so for an interim period the lounge is now on level 3 of the hotel. Although the room has no windows the service is excellent and the quality of snacks on offer is also very good. Traders Cafe had again been revamped and both the breakfast and dinner buffet spreads were much improved since my last visit. The hotel takes the major credit cards (not all hotels do yet) and has an excellent interney system. All in all I'd certainly recommend this hotel for both business and holiday trips.

Room Tip: The Club Rooms are worth the extra daily cost.

I like Traders. It is in a great location, the staff are some of the best you will find anywhere. They are charming, attentive and nothing is too much trouble. The front desk team were wonderful. Excellent buffet breakfast. I stayed here on a couple of occasions in the last month. One night I ate dinner at their buffet which was terriffic and fantastic value at $24. However, a couple of weeks later I ate there again and it wasn't nearly as good.

Internet access is excellent. I stayed in a club room at one point which I thought was poor value. When I booked I was told the only rooms available were club rooms, but when I checked in the club rooms were identical. Furthermore, the club floors were closed for renovation and the facilities had been give a temporary home on another floor. The windowless space was very uninviting and the quality of nibbles at happy hour were dismal. Breakfast was not as good as the buffet in the main part of the hotel. In fact, I had meetings and preferred to get together in the coffeee shop or main reception space, rather than the freezing club lounge.

Room Tip: Try for a high floor with a north-facing room with views of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback after your stay experience at our hotel. I am disappointed that you found our food quality not up to standard and I wish to apologize for this. We strive to always offer the freshest product we can find in Yangon and we will certainly make some improvements.

Our prices are specifically set to provide good value for money, but should not impact the experience in any way. Vegaholic, our team will make some changes which we hope you will notice on your next trip.

Midnight arrival and check in, no problem. Consistently good food and drinks. Good location for 4 day stay with side trips to Pathein and elsewhere.
Room refurbishment and construction of new buildings next door mean some noises during the day.
The pool was just wonderful, though better if it had some trees around it to screen out neighbouring buildings.
Refurbished rooms bear the Shangri-La and Traders Hallmark.
This building was purpose built by the Kuok Group and not acquired.

Room Tip: Ask to be away from refurbishment and construction site. Above 15 floor has views?

We stayed 2 evenings. The room is clean, quiet, and the bed is comfortable. The only complaint we have is the cafe: (1) we saw a waiter touched and handled the fruits with his bare hands. That is very unhygienic, (2) the placemat has stains. They need to clean the placemats. (3) the soup for the Burmese noodles was lukewarm, rather than hot, (4) the most disturbing are the flies. They need to get an electrical light which attract the flies to kill them. It will solve the problem.

Many thanks for your comments and I am disappointed that your dining experience was affected by some of our team not following our HACCP standard procedures. These observations are taken very seriously and we have corrected this. 5Flower , we do take a range of precautions to deal with the insects , however Yangon is experiencing a heat wave with little wind which makes it much harder to control, but be assured we have a number of steps we follow. Should I be able to be of any further assistance please email me on phillip.couvaras@tradershotels.com

We were recently there for 3 nights as a second choice.
The hotel has a nice location - if you like hustle and bustle - in central Yangon. First impressions not really positive, with the main hall looking more like a train station than a quasi-deluxe hotel. Recently bought by Shangri-la, it is undergoing substantial renovation, with workers and noise all-over during the day. Rooms are ok, spacious and well appointed, and it is worth getting the Club floors, high up, although during our stay the Club lounge had been relocated on the 3rd floor and was a bit cramped. The main restaurant (more like a coffee shop) was good quality for money.

Room Tip: High floor

We stayed here for 1 night. Booked 2 delux rooms with breakfast for 4 of us through Agoda. Not sure if it is cheaper to book via a local agent but we have had to cancel a prior trip in the past so the cancellable but more expensive option suited us. As we arrived early at 10:30 a.m., the rooms we requested for (high floor facing Shwedagon Pagoda) were not available as they were still being occupied. So we opted for one room on lower floor just to store luggage, put valuables in safe and freshen up before we headed off on our private city tour. The requested room on a higher floor was waiting for us upon our return from our day tour at 8 p.m. The rooms were refurbished - new and clean. The pagoda facing room is better if you can get one. No complains whatsoever room wise except that I wish the hair dryer was placed in the bathroom instead of in the bedroom writing desk/dresser but I understand the potential danger of having it in the bathroom. The bathroom has a step in shower in a bathtub, not a dedicated shower cubicle.

Receptionists were helpful. I wrote to customer service in advance to get them to make a booking at Padonmar restaurant for us before arrival and they happily obliged. They even emailed back with confirmation. The staff at the Trader's Cafe were friendly and helpful. Food was good at the Cafe with a good selection, reasonably priced by western standards but appears expensive in Yangon considering it has only just opened up to tourists.

The hotel has a car pick up service from airport at US$35 but we decided to just hail a cab outside the airport (used Parami Taxi which were waiting outside the airport) at US$10 for us family of 4 to the hotel. I am sure the car provided by the hotel is newer and more luxurious but for that 30-40 min journey it was bearable using the local taxis (a second hand Japanese make station wagon that sits 4 excluding driver - seat belts only in the front) to save US$50 both ways (local cab aircon was not powerful - the steering wheel of the local cab is on the right but the taxi drives on the right too! Weird). There were mosquitoes in the local taxis though - we killed 2 in that short journey. We got the same driver to pick us up from hotel to airport on day of departure.

The hotel is waking distance to Bogyoke Aung San market, Sule Pagoda and a short car ride to the Yangon River, City Hall, high court etc. Very convenient. Did not have a chance to use the swimming pool though.

We didn't have a chance to change money at the airport as there was a long queue but there wasn't a currency exchange at Trader's Hotel. The receptionist informed us that they haven't got a licence for that. So they directed us to the money changer at the Central Hotel located behind Traders Hotel. The rate is about the same as that at the airport. At the time of our visit, the rate is roughly US$1= Kyat 830 ish and S$1= Kyat 630 ish. The airport and Central hotel both accept US $ and Singapore $ but now with hindsight, the rate using US$ is better than S$'s.

Would stay here again if we return to Yangon.

Room Tip: Request for a high floor facing Shwedagon pagoda in advance.

We started our tour of Myanmar with a two day stay in this hotel. Very pleasantly surprised at the standard of accommodation, this is an excellent 4 start hotel with all the qualities of the Shangri La group. Staff were excellent, service very good, food very good. Bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Free wi fi was an unexpected bonus. A very warm welcome when we arrived, having got to our room, a knock on the door revealed 4 young ladies, staff at the hotel, with a 40 anniversary cake for my wife and I. A lovely touch which set the tone for our stay. Yes the hotel is being renovated but the disturbance is limited to a couple of floors and only in the daytime. The hotel does cater for business people and a large NGO presence but again no problem.
Highly recommended.
