“A Nice Hotel”
Reviewed 18 February 2014

We stayed at the Traders Hotel at the end of a 15 day river cruise from Mandalay to Yangon. The hotel was welcoming after 10 days on the river. We had a large recently refurbished room with a king sized bed and great view. The buffet breakfast had an abundance of choices of food from all over the world. All the food that we tried was fresh and delicious. The staff were warm, courteous, and helpful. All in all a very nice experience

Stayed two nights at the hotel before and after my short trip to Bagan. The staff was excellent, rooms are clean and very comfortable. Wifi works great and the TV offers plenty of channels. The pool looks nice, but I think the gym is very well equipped with cardio and weight machines and plenty of free weights. Also, there are steam rooms, saunas and jacuzzi.

Had dinner at the Chinese restaurant for the Lunar New Year reunion, and buffet lunch at the restaurant. Again great service, friendly staff and very enjoyable meals.

Lest I forget, it is walking distance to the Sule Pagoda, beautiful colonial buildings, old streets and Scot's Market. I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Some rooms offers a view of the Swedagon Pagoda.

The Traders is very centrally located, somewhere in between the Shwedagon Pagoda and the Strand. This is an old hotel but I think they must have done renovations because our room looked fairly new. The beds are conformable and the breakfast spread very good. Compared to the prices that some of the fancier hotels such as the Governor's Residence and The Strand Hotel is charging, the Traders represents great value.

Room Tip: Stay on the Club floor and gain access to the happy hour in the lounge every night with a buffet and...

We stayed in a club room on the 21st floor with fabulous views over Yangon (Rangoon). It's difficult to find fault with the hotel. Excellent room
With great amenities, excellent friendly service and good food. Good location too neat to Sule pagoda and old city

The Trader's hotel has definitely seen some better days, however, many rooms have been refurbished and others are currently being done. The hotel staff, like all Myanmar people, are warm and welcoming.

With Myanmar a tourist haven, the hotel and staff are coping well with the massive increase in demand from yesteryear. The extra benefits of the Trader's Club are well worth the extra cost if you enjoy a relaxing drink on an evening and a few nibbles - though to its credit - the selection at this executive club "happy hour" exceeds most western hotels.

Customer service was good, my executive suite room was well appointed, clean and the bathroom had been fully renovated. The room was appointed with all the normal Shangri-La extras. The minibar was well stocked and the prices reasonable.

Amazingly, compared to previous trips (when there wasn't internet), the WiFi in the room, lounge and public areas worked perfectly and operated at a good speed.

The food at the lobby restaurant was excellent and had an amazing spread.

Like most Asian hotels that operate in a security environment, guests are subjected to a cursory security check at check-in. This has increased since a bombing at the hotel last year in one of the guest rooms. The security staff are obliging and the check while some Europeans and Americans may find it confronting, it is the norm in Asia and done quickly and simply.

Considering there has been a major increase in room nights in all hotels in Yangon and Myanmar in the last few years, the hotel and its staff are coping with the demand as well as they can. We also found it important to speak with hotel management if you had any issues, we did not - it was just a warm welcome, but they were quick to address any issues or concerns.

Room Tip: Trader's Club rooms or suites are definitely worth the extra money.

Excellent hotel and up to Shangri-La standards. Very comfortable refurbished room and good location for sightseeing in Yangon. The International evening buffet was amazing. Every type of food you could imagine. The breakfast was up to the same standard. The only criticism was that the bar allowed smoking which we found surprising.

The place certainly has aged (gracefully) but the wear is showing. That's probably why guests are currently disturbed by intense daytime construction noise. Yes, a note in the room will alert you to that and a set of earplugs is provided, but that doesn't help much when you are desperate for some rest during the day.
Service is mostly good, the rooms are well appointed and in very good working order. Telephone services (concierge, wake up calls, room service, etc. ) are excellent. WiFi in room and in public areas worked flawlessly. The latter is a feature you learn to appreciate quickly in a country where connectivity is difficult to attain.
The food and bar outlets are fine with good service.
The flaws are in some of the service details. I had requested and was granted an extension of stay only to be disturbed by security, despite the do not disturb sign activated, and told that I should have checked out a long time ago.
OK, mistakes happen, but at least an apology would have been in order.
Annoying is the security check upon entering the hotel.
Luggage is going through a scanner on arrival and awarded a sticker "security checked" for whose benefit, I don't know. The sticker however is very sticky so you are well advised to request being spared the useless piece of sticky paper that is incredibly hard to remove.
All in all a very mixed experience, from excellent service to some very annoying incidences, overall therefore a mediocre rating in my book

Dear Hongkon,
I appreciate the feedback provided after your recent stay with us. The comments present an opportunity for improvement, and we will certainly follow up on them. I am happy to report that most of our upgrading and refurbishing projects are finished, which will eliminate any noise concerns.
The service shortfalls will be addressed separately, as this is also not up to my own expectation. Safety and security of our guests is a priority, and we will continue and improve the process, making it as convenient and stress free as possible.
I am looking forward to welcoming you back soon,
Most sincerely,
