“Lovely hotel and great staff”
Reviewed 1 January 2013

We spent three nights overall on our recent trip to Myanmar with Trailfinders at the Savoy. Rooms were colonial style and gorgeous (as well as having UK sockets which was a bonus!). Very peaceful with lovely pool area, nice bar etc. Breakfast was delicious, the best that we had on the trip. The staff were also incredibly helpful and nice. I had problems accessing the internet from the business centre so they very kindly let me use the one in their own office so that I could check in for our flight the next day. Yeah, it's on a busy intersection, but it's Yangon! What do you expect? That's part of the whole experience. Don't really know the price as we booked everything as a tailor made holiday through Trailfinders.
Some nice restaurants around (the hotel was little too expensive for us for dinner) as long as you take a torch with you to find them!
Overall thought that the hotel was beautiful, the room comfortable and the staff charming and helpful.

Charming but definitely in need of some uplifting in order to justify the cost. When you walk in, you feel you are walking into a historical place. There is no elevator to take you to the upper floors but the staff does most of the hard work for you. However, there are some obvious elements of neglect in the upkeeping of the hotel which could easily be solved.

As other reviewers say this is old style but with a big price tag. Inside it's very peaceful but it's a v busy road outside with a ice cream bar which our kids rather liked ! We stayed here one night at the end of a ten night trip to Myanmar as a treat with three kids so we took two rooms. So my outlay was rather high ! Just not sure it's worth it.

Travelling on holiday in October 2012, the Savoy was the first hotel we stayed at in Yangon. It is very charming and our room, facing the pool, was very quiet. The room was very clean and well-maintained but showing its age a little (in a charming way). Staff were polite, friendly and efficient. However the charm faded when the towel rail fell off the wall, unfortunately this was clearly an old problem which had not been fixed. We were also bothered by mosquitoes in the room and grounds - and the reception handed us bug spray immediately which suggested the problem was common. Good hotel rooms are in very short supply in Yangon given the current rush into Myanmar, so room rates have doubled or tripled. At $300 per night, the Savoy should invest in maintenance and improve on service (for example, by mosquito control in the grounds and definitely in the room turndown). On our return to Yangon at the end of the trip, we stayed at the Traders hotel, originally because the Savoy was fully booked. However we would choose Traders over the Savoy next time around.

The hotel is beautifully furnished and has plenty of colonial charme. However, it stands at a busy intersection which makes coming and going rather unpleasant.
More importantly, at 300usd per night, service is disappointing. When we arrived, the fridge in our room was not working and, travelling with an infant, this was a problem for us. Unfortunately, we had to ask twice and it was only late in the evening that someone finally turned up to solve the problem. Also, we broke a cup in our room and were rather abruptly asked to pay 10usd for it - the piece of paper we were handed actually has 3000kyats (about 3.5usd handwritten on it and then cancelled out and replaced with 10usd) - a 300usd/night hotel should not need to make a profit over a broken cup!

We spent two nights in this hotel when we first arrived in Yangon. Although it is located on a very busy street, the environment inside hotel is peaceful and relaxed. Our suite was large and beautifully furnished. It overlooked the pool and garden. The service was excellent.

Room Tip: Choose a room that overlooks the pool, to avoid the street noise

We spent two nights at the Savoy on our arrival in Burma and one night before departure. Yes, the hotel is on a very busy junction, and crossing the roads nearby is daunting (we made it x4 back and forth. But inside all was calm. We had rooms on the second and then on the first floors and at no time were we disturbed by traffic noise. Each room was large and airy. The teak wooden floors shone and the decor added to the calm. The shower was good as were the breakfasts - with a stunning view from the restaurant windows of the Shwedagon Pagoda - and the swimming pool was a bonus.

In the evening, and as we did not want to eat the western-style food served in the hotel, we were directed to two nearby restaurants, one Burmese and one Thai. The staff throughout the hotel were both helpful and thoughtful.
