“Not the service you expect in Myanmar”
Reviewed 17 March 2012

We stayed on our last trip to Myanmar two times in the K.P.Hotel. This hotel is for Myanmar standards very big , the same standard like in similar hotels in KL, Hongkong, Singapore etc. The lobby is usually crowded, the check in impersonal. Other TA members warned of loud rooms facing the busy street. So we booked for our group of 5 friends three deluxe lakeview rooms and these rooms were guaranteed by the hotel. What did we get : 1 lakeview room , 2 rooms facing the noisy street. When complaining , there was no apology about this " mistake" at all. The young lady at check declared ,she would check later ,if she could transfer us . This type of service was new to us in Myanmar and not very helpful after a long voyage. It took a while to convince her , that we wanted excactly the rooms we had booked and paid for . At the end, she was able to find two deluxe -rooms in her computer without big problems. Was this a coincidence or did other TA members encounter the same ? Last time we stayed in the Savoy hotel ,which was far superior to the K.P. Next time we will avoid the K.P and go to the Savoy again. The rest ( rooms, restaurant, location) are as described in other TA reviews. .

The last 5 years when we were in Yangon, we always stayed in the Kandwaygyi
We always were satisfied but this year we could notice a real improvement.
Rooms are redecorated and there is a nice atmosphere in the whole hotel.
A nice place to stay

Room Tip: rooms view on tthe lake or view on the Shwegadon Pagode

for three nights in Yangon, this hotel is a perfect setting. We were in corporate suites and they were very clean, amenities were good. Room service is perfect and restaurant good. the only cons are that there is no wifi in rooms and the swimming pool is really small. the reception and concierge are efficient.

Setting in park is beautiful as are rooms. But the two nights we were there, 2 of the 3 restaurants in the hotel were closed for private functions or repairs. The only restaurant remaining open could not properly handle the guests wanting to eat, I.e. poor management. They say they have WiFi, but it never worked.

The hotel is not close to downtown but just 15 minutes walking nicely to the Eastern Gate of the mighty Shwedagon pagoda, where you can see how local livings on the way. Hotel has a green garden with both view to Shwedagon pagoda and the Kandawgyi lake. Located by the lake makes the hotel different from others, where you can relax and having cool winds apart from bustling Yangon. Room is modern and comfortable, has window for natural atmosphere plus mosquito screen. Breakfast is provided with wide choices. The Thiri restaurant for dinner is not something excellent. Staffs are friendly, especially front desk.

Room Tip: Lower floor with lake view will be disturbed by music from people doing exercise in early morning ar...

We really enjoyed our last night in Yangon staing here. The roon which had a view of the Shwedagon Pagoda was excellent with all the facilities you could want especially those who miss BBC News on satellite. We enjoyed our breakfast and dinner at the Thiri Cafe and indeed our pre dinner drink in the Rainforest cafe....we were hoping to catch a folklore show but apparently this was not operated now.

Found all the staff very friendly and helpful.

Swimming pool is being improved and the pool that was accessible was OK to look at but more like a large ornamental pond and difficult to swin in without catching a limb on some part of the strangely designed layout. Probably be better in a month or two when the pool extension or alternative is complete.

Room Tip: Go for a Shwedagon view we were in 438 I suggest a higher number for a slightly more full on view

We stayed at this hotel on 3 separate occasions during our 12 day visit to Myanmar and were equally impressed each time. Yes, it is definitely a modern hotel, but it is also extremely comfortable and has enough local touches to make it a proper Myanmar hotel and not just a part of some big international chain. Location is both good and bad. The bad is that it is some way north of the city centre though still well within Yangon. The good is that it is quite close to the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the greatest wonders of the world, and also is situated right by Lake Kandawgyi - also used as a reservoir. Not only is the park and 8 kilometre circumference lake with its charming wooden bridge, an oasis of calm in a busy city but is great for early morning or late afternoon walks, or jogs if you prefer. Also, although the hotel is away from the centre we never had any difficulties in getting a taxi into town, though we usually went at busy times
The hotel was pretty full during the period we were there so each time we were in one of the rooms at the top of the building and the lifts didn't go that far so we had to go up to the 4th floor I think it was and then walk along the corridor and walk up a flight of stairs to get to our room/s. A bit inconvenient but we were compensated by even better views from our room and the quality of the room/s remained high. One time we had great views of the glistening Shwedagon Pagoda and the other two times great views over Lake Kandawgyi including the Karaweik, an extra large copy of the old Royal Barge.
The rooms were a good size and nicely decorated. The beds were extremely comfortable, indeed some of the most comfortable mattresses that we have had in any hotel we have stayed in. I didn't check but I am pretty sure they must have used at least some 'memory foam' in the mattresses. There was a comfortable arm chair as well as desk etc. The TV was a good quality large flat screen with Cable TV with at least some English language programmes. There was the standard in-room safe, mini-bar and hair-dryer. The bathroom was modern and well designed with separate large shower stall. Something that I particularly liked was that the shower had a waterfall head in addition to the normal shower head, which gave a really great shower. Excellent water pressure. Good range of toiletries provided.
The rest of the hotel was also well designed and comfortable. One thing we particularly liked was that some of the corridors (not all) had open sides so one got good views of the park and lake as well as some cooling breezes. The hotel Reception, visitor/guest seating and bar were all in one large open area by the entrance. There was also a nice hotel shop though prices were somewhat high. The hotel had a pool but I didn't manage to get there. I din't get round to trying their internet access either. While we were staying there was some major building works taking place in the garden area and it looks like they were putting in a larger/better car park.
There was a lovely tropical, light, comfortable dining room. We had a light evening meal on two of the nights (we were too tired to take a taxi into the centre or wherever) eating only Myanmar choices from the international menu. Food was a bit pricey but quality was fair and not too dumbed down. Breakfast though was excellent with a really good buffet with a wide choice of both Western dishes as well as more general Asian dishes and some authentic Myanmar dishes. Loved it and ate far too much! However, on one morning we had a very early flight and had to leave before the buffet opened at 6 so we asked for, and were given, a packed breakfast. Obviously a lot of people in the same position as we saw around 30 or so other boxes in the morning. Food was nicely boxed though contents were somewhat dry and boring. Still, better than nothing.
Service was excellent and a good balance between friendliness and professionalism. Never had any problems with any of the staff.
Although I am sure there are other good hotels in Yangon, we were very happy with the Kandawgyi Palace and would be very happy to return.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel had good views of the Shwedagon, rooms at the back have better views...
