“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

My husband and I stayed there for a long weekend in November 2013 and found the experience completely satisfying though we found the room rates a bit on the high side. The hotel is located right by a beautiful lake with superb view of the Pogoda and spectaculous view of sunrise and sunset. A nice swimming pool with some landscape next to the lake was great for relaxation. The hotel staff was both attentive and efficient. Food at the restaurants in the hotel was of fine quality and very reasonably priced by international standard. The French restaurant would be well worth a visit. Don't be put off by cash payment only as there is a cash machine/bank kiosk right next to the hotel reception.

As I have said before I have been to Myanmar many times and stayed in various hotels. I like this one because of the great lake side views and friendly staff. Like all the hotels the rooms are dark and it is hard to read unless you are lying in bed by the lamp. Aircon is great and there are lifts to all the floors. I find the food just Ok but not fantastic. Great pool and a good place to stay and relax after or before your trip. You can wake early and walk around to the lake boardwalk which is well worth it. Make sure you take some local currency as foreigners have to pay about $2. Great to do just after sunrise.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake side view room if you can get it.

This is a very well located hotel in Yangon that is more like a resort because of the pleasant environment in and around the property. It is adjacent to and overlooks the scenic Kandawgyi Public Park and Karaweik Hall. It is opposite the Yangon Zoo and about 10 minutes drive from the downtown area and a few minutes drive from the Shwedagon Pagoda. It is well known by taxi drivers and so easy to get to from other parts of town and the airport.

I stayed here at the beginning and end of a family holiday in Myanmar. On entering the hotel at the lobby for check-in one immediately starts to feel at home. Staff greeted us with a cool drink and cold towel while we waited for our room key to be arranged. That is a nice touch after a long hot day of traveling. The concierge staff and porters were well-trained and went out of their way to help us get to our rooms in the shortest of time. They cheerfully helped us find public taxis, make outside telephone calls, and arrange money changing. There is an ATM machine in the lobby which should work with foreign visa/mastercards.

The property has been around quite a few years and is a traditional teak structure with wooden tile roofing throughout which gives it a lot of charm. You will want to take time to explore the spacious gardens, take a dip in the pool in the late afternoon or simply take in the scenery with locals walking along the boardwalk across the lake, then at dusk gather around the cocktail deck for a drink and to watch thousands of bats fly across the lake on their way to feed in the park. We enjoyed two days of this routine and never tired.

On the first night we stayed in deluxe rooms. On our last night we were lucky enough to be upgraded to the Governor's Suite. The rooms were upgraded recently and are as comfortable as more modern hotels in the city but more elegant. The view from the rooms depends on where you are. The deluxe room we had was spacious but had a smallish window with a limited view. The large windows across two sides of the living area in the Governor's Suite looked out over lush gardens. Bathroom fixtures and interior decor are classy if not a bit old-fashioned, which we liked a lot. The beds are exceptionally comfortable due in part to down pillows, and in the rooms very quiet, so sleep was excellent.

We ate breakfasts in the tastefully appointed lobby restaurant, and had one dinner there. The breakfast is like a safari, there is so much to choose from. Frankly a bewildering array of food options including all the Western favorites, traditional Myanmar food such as mohinga and Asian delights. The only minor point was that we had to go out of our way to find a waiter to fill up our coffee cups as they appeared to be very busy with a full room of guests. The dinner was surprisingly good and reasonably priced for what we chose, pasta for one of us, and Thai curries for others. We sampled the house Myanmar wine which is acceptable and reasonably priced. An outdoor section of the restaurant is a great place to relax on comfortable sofas and sip a coffee while reading a book under the shade of a towering fig tree.

All considered, it's one of my favorite places to stay in Myanmar, and probably Asia.

Of the three hotels we stayed at during our trip to Myanmar, this was the best. That said, I don't know if this is the best you can get in Yangon. It was comfortable overall, but the bathroom was tired and the room could use some upgrading. Breakfast was decent, better than what we got in the other hotels we stayed at. The view of the lake was nice. In the morning, the cleaning staff in the hallway were very loud. Also, we could hear departing guests dragging their suitcases to the exit. The bathrooms were well appointed. We were part of a tour so I don't know how much we paid for it. But I feel that if the price is good, the hotel is decent enough to stay there. Personally, if I am ever back, I'll try another hotel.

We travel to Myanmar regularly for family reasons and always try to stay in the Kandawgyi for the first two nights - for nostalgic reasons - so we can compare where it is now with the past 15 years. It is disappointing to note the serious decline of the service in the dining room Whoever trains the staff has placed more emphasis on the setting out of the cutlery than customer service. Both for the evening meal and particularly for breakfast, it was very difficult to catch someone's eye to indicate that one wanted another cup of coffee or tea. They were all with their heads down laying the cutlery or just talking to each other. Some people had to come in from the tables in the garden terrace to ask for more coffee in the mornings. We had to wait for a long time for drinks at the table and then only some of the drinks came and they had to be reminded of other drinks they had forgotten.

We decided to spend the whole of our first day in the hotel, resting after the flight so we ate only in the hotel. Unfortunately all three of us came down with very serious food poisoning - so serious that my wife had to have a wheelchair to leave the following day. We were forced to cancel the next three days of our trip. It is now three weeks after our visit and we are still unwell - so we are talking about very serious contamination somewhere in the kitchens. This, combined with the poor service, suggests that the hotel has a major problem with the supervision of its dining facility.

The rest of the Kandawgyi experience was good. Rooms were clean, reception was fine, and if the hotel sorts out its dining facility, it will continue to be a favourite amongst travellers to Yangon.
If it doesn't, I would eat somewhere else in the evenings, and be very patient at breakfast.

Stayed here very briefly so not much time to explore the pool and the lake which obviously wins over most people. Possibly it would have won us over if we had the chance to explore further!

Our experience was that the rooms we were given had no view at all and the balcony was strangely boxed in by a 5ft wall or roof directly in front- so no view. The rooms are quite tired, bathrooms (although clean) were not functioning correctly, pathetically weak shower, 80's decor and in need of some quality updating.

The corridors were very noisy that night as well, but the worst thing about our stay here was all 4 of us got terribly sick for over a week with a bacterial stomach upset. It was indisputably something in this hotel, Either the very average evening meal we had in the restaurant, or the water in the coffee in the morning, who knows, just saying - beware! We would not stay here again as I believe there are better hotels for similar prices in Yangon.

My colleague and I spent a long stay here while being based in Yangon for work, and I have nothing but praise for this establishment. The staff go above and beyond and even when there are language barriers (which is still the case at most places in Yangon), they try their best to accommodate you. Location is magnificent, being right on Kandawgyi Lake, and the rooms have an authentic yet luxurious feel to them. I can confidently recommend this hotel. PS - Try the French restaurant and don't miss a day at the pool, which is practically on the Lake. Also, do walk / run the boardwalk in the Kandawgyi Lake park (don't forget 2 USD entrance for foreigners for the park.)
