“Central hotel in Yagon Awful hotel in Yangon for 80 USD room”
Reviewed 20 January 2013

Unfortunately we spent 2 nights in this hotel. ( superieur room 80 USD) January 2013
Please check our photos of the hotel. It is very dirty, they have never cleaned the rugs or curtains.
They have not invested a penny in the last 15 years to keep well the hotel.
We got grey towels instead of white ones. Rusty celiling in the bathroom.
The first time in Myanmar that staff was not helpful at all.
Smells like humidity in the rooms and the corridors. The sheets smelled like mothball.
The elevators were not working for a couple of hours.
And the best of all : at 6 am there is a machine working ( we do not know what it is doing) very very noisy so you have to get up.

The 2 positives points of this hotel : location and very fast internet.
Yes it is true there a not a lot of hotels in myanmar, but I am sure for 80 usd is possible to get something al least clean. In fact all our hotels in differents regions we payed 80 USD and they were great.
Next day we went to Bangkok, we got a 5 stars hotel super clean, modern, well situated for 90 USD. If hotels continue to charge prices likes this one, tourist would prefer to go back to Thailand or vietnam.

Things are changing quickly in Burma, so any review must be viewed as relative at best.

Relatively clean, decent large rooms, friendly staff, substantial buffet breakfast.

Wireless in lobby only at time of writing...which, in Burma, is frankly not poor in relative terms. (But I may be more forgiving than most - I found it a delight to be in a country and turn off all internet devices!)

Prices in Rangoon are in a great state of flux. The six of us had good value, but as this is an "it" spot now, attempts to charge $200 a night here are being made. So I leave it for you to judge based on what you can get re value.

All in all I would recommend this hotel. You won't be blown away, but it was decent and a nice base for our Rangoon meanderings.

We had 2 rooms at the Central for 5 nights over Xmas. Not sure what rooms previous posters had but ours were very clean and had opening windows...great for washing. Our boys loved the breakfast and the dining room is not windowless as previously suggested. Great location for the market, railway station and food options at night. Also great optometry shops nearby, plus an excellent english speaking tailor...Global Tailor...just a few doors along. Plus the excitement of seeing local wedding parties who use the hotel as a venue.

All fairly average only stayed 1 night, good restaurant across the road, the area is an Indian neighbourhood, short walk to the CBD (of derelict buildings left over from the capital moving) nothing bad or good to stay about this hotel, rooms clean and large, nice cheap accom in a place where its hard to find.

Clean rooms if a little dated but friendly staff
Easy walk to market and many food options
Stay here, it is a great budget option at three star level and would recommend it

The hotel was a positive suprise, much better than expected. The room was big and the beds good, the aircondition did work and it were situated in the centre of Yangon. The cost for taxi from airport was USD 12 and back USD 7. You could change money in the hotel and no extra cost.

I agree with previous reviewers that the hotel has an excellent location, good breakfasts, and will add the wait-staff in the restaurant are very eager to please and seem to want to take good care of their guests. However the infrastructure leaves much to be desired. The very first night the alarm did not go off at the required time and we were fortunate to have gotten up on our own. Front Desk explanation: Phone was dead. The next stay, we found that none of the English channels were available. When we tried to call downstairs, the phone gave a busy signal. I finally had to go down and try to have the matter resolved. The front desk's response was glib and unhelpful. They said that they tried to call the room and it was fine. Try as I may to explain to them that outgoing calls were the problem, the response was always- but we just called the room and it was okay. I had to ask for the manager to have the English channels restored, after about two hours we got these, but then the sports channels went off the air!
The front desk staff have very poor command of English (other staff in smaller cities are far better equipped) as well as basic knowledge of the city- for e.g. They were off by an hour with regard to the opening time of Scott Market (which is next door) or told me explicitly that a certain restaurant did not need reservations, only to find out that that restaurant surely did. They initially claimed that their own business center was closed after 5pm in the evening (which is when tourists would normally want to check emails), then claimed that the internet was not working, and of course as soon as I spoke with the manager, the business center was immediately open and the internet was working!
Worse still, after I did talk with the manager, they were all very grumpy with me.

Room Tip: Make sure that the phone works and the television has the channels that you like to watch- or escala...
