We only arrived at 4pm and left at 5am the following morning but the service and assistance we received from the front desk was outstanding. We needed a bus booked the following morning and that was no problem – they also had the taxi ready for us at 5am the following morning before we even got down to reception. The room itself was so big (but a refreshing change from some others), that it had two air conditioners. We were on the top floor – if you have an irrational fear of pigeons, maybe request a room on a lower floor, as we had a few scratching around on the roof, not enough to wake us up though.

We didn’t get to try breakfast before we left. There are a few decent looking restaurants right near the hotel although we didn’t get a chance to try them either. The Excel Palace is in walking distance to Inya Lake and only a short drive to Shwedagon. Unless you want to be in walking distance of Sule Paya and Bogyoke Markets, I’d recommend this place purely for the service.

The hotel is inappropriately named - it neither excelled nor was a palace. The staff were friendly, location was quiet, room was large but bathroom was terrible. There was so much mildew that neither of us were game to have a shower.

I spent all of April in Myanmar and spent my whole month in excel palace. Had a wonderful time there. The rooms were tidy and comfy. The best part of the hotel was the staff they were always helpful and friendly. Definatly value for money. I will be back.

I booked this hotel thru an online agent, and so I have already paid-in-full for my accommodation here.
It was quite difficult to find this hotel because it is behind the restaurant. You have to walk down a little side street to get to the hotel.
I would say that this is more like the old house of the owners of Excel Hotel Group. I supposed it was a very nice house (when first built), but now the rooms are all very run down. This is more like a guesthouse, basically are just rooms (and no other facilities). I think they have about 15 rooms in total.
Wifi connection is free, but very bad here.
Everything else is money here. I have to pay 5,000 kyat per day to rent a DVD player. And the most funny part is that they even charged me for the calls I have made to my friend in the other rooms (room to room calls, not even calling outside lines).
Breakfast is very simple, which is served at the Chinese restaurant on the main road. I stayed there for 10 days, and have only eaten the breakfast there once.
Staying there for 10 days, the Manager didn't even bother to say hi.
I'm also from the hotel industry, it is indeed very depressing to have such an experience.
I guess they will not see me again.
