Poor value if you compare to S.E. Asia... but for Rangoon fairly average.
Location is very good, just off Merchant Road a mere 10 minutes walk to anywhere downtown including Bogyoke Market and a decent 15-20 minutes from Schwedagon Pagoda. These walks are really interesting as you pass all of real life Rangoon has to offer.
The hotel is right off the street into a decent reception that doubles in the morning for breakfast.
We had booked the "suite" by the reception but when we heard the noise of the stairs right beside the room, and the fact it was right on the road, we asked to be changed. This caused a bit of a hassle from the girl on reception. I didn't care about the money, I just wanted to be changed and there was a room available.The next room was much better and the extra charge for the "suite" is not worth it.
The windowless room was just OK if not up to the standard of other SE Asian hotels. I would have liked better quality towels, sheets, linen and pillows. Basic bathroom, basic room but clean enough and we had a decent night.
The breakfast area is not so good as it is quite small, beside the front door, right by reception and just cannot accommodate sufficient guests, even when they arrive at different times. The first morning we did not have to wait....the second there was a wait of 20 minutes. Breakfast is, as usual in Burma, quite basic and meagre.
The hotel is decent enough and, by Rangoon standards, not such bad value for money.
The Wardan Hotel where we stayed the next time in Rangoon was far superior and a different story for the same rate. We would not rush back to the Aung Tha Pyay. It was a fairly decent hotel, not the worst by any means, but needs more improved amenities.
What really annoys me in Burma is that workers get $60-80 a MONTH! So a mere one or two nights in a hotel pays for someone for a whole month to paint, clean, maintain and renovate. Why is this not done?? Employ workers and get the jobs done.
My other gripe!
Burmese hotel owners/managers;
Your foreign guests expect far more for the rate you charge, which is far more than the local rate, and it is not reasonable to increase your rates every single year to a now silly level and not improve your standards. Your rates have gone up 5-800% over 4 years with no improvement in standards or quality! You must reinvest and improve and not keep all the profits. SE Asia has far, far better value to offer.
You must also improve breakfast as they are mean and too basic. Two eggs, two slices of toast, some awful orange squash and tea is not sufficient for $60-70 a night.
