Aung Tha Pyay Hotel
Ranked #62 of 176 Yangon (Rangoon) B&B and Inns
Reviewed 7 March 2014

Poor value if you compare to S.E. Asia... but for Rangoon fairly average.

Location is very good, just off Merchant Road a mere 10 minutes walk to anywhere downtown including Bogyoke Market and a decent 15-20 minutes from Schwedagon Pagoda. These walks are really interesting as you pass all of real life Rangoon has to offer.

The hotel is right off the street into a decent reception that doubles in the morning for breakfast.

We had booked the "suite" by the reception but when we heard the noise of the stairs right beside the room, and the fact it was right on the road, we asked to be changed. This caused a bit of a hassle from the girl on reception. I didn't care about the money, I just wanted to be changed and there was a room available. The next room was much better and the extra charge for the "suite" is not worth it.

The windowless room was just OK if not up to the standard of other SE Asian hotels. I would have liked better quality towels, sheets, linen and pillows. Basic bathroom, basic room but clean enough and we had a decent night.

The breakfast area is not so good as it is quite small, beside the front door, right by reception and just cannot accommodate sufficient guests, even when they arrive at different times. The first morning we did not have to wait....the second there was a wait of 20 minutes. Breakfast is, as usual in Burma, quite basic and meagre.

The hotel is decent enough and, by Rangoon standards, not such bad value for money.

The Wardan Hotel where we stayed the next time in Rangoon was far superior and a different story for the same rate. We would not rush back to the Aung Tha Pyay. It was a fairly decent hotel, not the worst by any means, but needs more improved amenities.

My gripe;
What really annoys me in Burma is that workers get $60-80 a MONTH! So a mere one or two nights in a hotel pays for someone for a whole month to paint, clean, maintain and renovate. Why is this not done?? Employ workers and get the jobs done.

My other gripe!
Burmese hotel owners/managers;
Your foreign guests expect far more for the rate you charge, which is far more than the local rate, and it is not reasonable to increase your rates every single year to a now silly level and not improve your standards. Your rates have gone up 5-800% over 4 years with no improvement in standards or quality! You must reinvest and improve and not keep all the profits. SE Asia has far, far better value to offer.
You must also improve breakfast as they are mean and too basic. Two eggs, two slices of toast, some awful orange squash and tea is not sufficient for $60-70 a night.

Room Tip: Don't take the suite by reception. Noisy!! Also the rooms at the top of the stairs on the 1st f...

Get ready for inflated Yangon hotel prices everybody, and this property is the poster child of the syndrome. I was quoted a room at $59/nt for two, but when we arrived they said it was $69, and held the gun to my head over it, because they know that rooms in Yangon are at a shortage these days.

The room was clean, but with no window, and being not much larger than the two beds, it had the feeling of a jail cell.

We stayed here on our last 2 nights in Yangon and found everything was ok here. Not the most salubrious of streets with the front rooms overlooking a narrow alley that appears to be like a depot for the council workers. The front rooms are not noisy as might be expected. There is coloured glass in the windows overlooking the street, so if yoj want to look out you have to open the window but the view is not exactly inspiring anyway. The staff are friendly and helpful and will help grab a cab at the correct rate. The breakfast is the same each day but its ok and plenty of it. Overall its good value for the money charged, taking into account Yangon is expensive for hotels.

While the staff were friendly and helpful, the room spacious and clean, the biggest problem we had was nearly no hot water. We'd have to take a shower during off times of the day to get anything beyond tepid.

Also, the location looks out onto a dirty alley, without much useful nearby. We could not find a laundry service anywhere and had to resort to the hotel's. And restaurants beyond street food were hard to find. We almost checked out after the first night, but were too exhausted to search for a new one so ended up staying. We won't be returning to this hotel which seemed overpriced compared to other costs in Myanmar.

The room was clean, nice and had a big flat screen TV. The WiFi was very good by Myanmar standards. The breakfast was basic but decent. The staff were very nice and friendly and the location was good. I had a look at some of the other hotels in the area and this one was easily the best value.

A good basic hotel to start your tour through Myanmar. Located centrally, the main pagoda’s en markets are within 10-15 minutes walking distance. But there is so much to see on the way about daily Yangon life, that for sure you will forget about the time.

Rooms are standard, with good beds and 24/7 electricity and hot water. The cheaper ones have no window – but you will probably not spend much time in your room anyway.

Staff is very nice. They even arranged, overnight, a surprise b-day cake for breakfast. At the end of our trip it was a pleasure to return for the last the night before our flight back home.

ATP hotel, Yangon
Convenient location, clean, central. You get what you pay for.
We stayed here on our last night in Burma before flying out of Yangon the next day. Nothing to shout about but not a bad deal at USD70 a night. We took 4 rooms for 8 pax but we could have done with 3 rooms as the rooms were huge and can fit 3 pax comfortably. (Tip: room behind reception)

Cons:
- No shower curtains as all the hotels we stayed in
- Moth balls still in the cupboards but did not leave any scent
- Located in shady narrow alley

Pros:
- Good Wifi
- Effective reliable Hot water
- Convenient location, very close to Sule Pagoda
- Mattresses firm & comfy so sleep was good.
- Room 103 was large. 1 king sized bed & 1 twin plus 3m x 2m floor space. Ensuite bathroom
- A/C worked fine
- Not noisy even though close to the street level
- Renovated brewery. Steel beams.

I would stay here again
