Sorry....the hype here is NOT justified.
Wai Wai I am sure is a lovely person and I do admire what she is doing. Rangoon badly needs more accommodation and enterprise like hers has to be encouraged.
But we are paying guests...not guests.... and this is business. I feel the very positive reviews are based more on having met Wai Wai rather than the accommodation itself.
We all depend on Trip Advisor to make a proper judgement about a place. When we read it was (at the time) the number 1 B&B in Rangoon we were really impressed. Reviews stated the breakfast was wonderful, noodles to die for, the house was immaculate, etc. This is not accurate nor is it fair to other members.
The house is in a nice, though isolated, part of town and the laneway is impressive with big, expensive (?), well kept houses. Arriving to Wai Wai's was a disappointment. The house shares the entrance and the driveway is not welcoming at all and is not well kept neither is the entrance to the house itself. The downstairs has a sort of sitting area and the breakfast area with a single table and five chairs. We paid $40 for the night...the equivalent of two weeks wages in Burma. This is relevant in any country.
Our room was not great at all. I did not like the peeling paint, the dirty walls, the stained ceiling, the threadbare curtains, the torn mosquito mesh and the scruffy bathroom. I do not like been negative and especially for a business that is starting and needs good reviews to progress. But it will only progress with more hands on management and proper maintenance. People in Burma earn $60-80 a MONTH. So for two rooms for one day Wai Wai could have a man there for a month.
Breakfast was basic. A ring of pineapple, a banana, orange squash...not juice... an egg (2?) and two slices of toast. This is NOT the great breakfast alluded to in another review.
My photos should be of interest.
