“One of my favorite places”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The Bogyoke market is a wonderful place to spend a few hours, filled with vendors selling everything from jade, rubies, carved wood, tshirts, and anything else you might want. The vendors tend to be quite friendly, and they are not typically pushy like in some countries. Most of them speak at least a little English (enough to work out a price to buy/sell and maybe answer basic questions)... some of them speak good English. It's customary to negotiate on the price of things, so you should go to the market expecting to go back and forth a few times. It's just expected. As always, inspect the items to check the quality and make sure you get what you pay for. I have been to the market on several occasions, and I have always found several items I wanted to take home to family and friends (or for myself), usually for very reasonable prices. The cost of things has increased modestly in recent years, but there are still great bargains to be found, at least by US standards. A trip to Yangon would not be complete without a visit to the market! Depending on your shopping style, you could easily spend several hours here.

“Tourist trap”
Reviewed 11 June 2014

Go there to look, but don't buy anything. Definitely don't buy a longyi here (like I did). I ended up buying a vivid blue one for $US30 (too much) and after one wash it was grey, despite being told it was top quality. A couple of locals took us here and I'm pretty sure they got a cut from the sale. There was a cool antique shop on the upstairs veranda which is worth a peep, but other than that I found most things to be overpriced and/or junk.

“Jade etc”
Reviewed 4 June 2014

A must to see in Yangoon this old market in a colonial building, once known as Scott's, is stall after stall as far as the eye can see, full of jade, precious stone, paintings, lacquerware , clothing, table ware and great street food. Shop keepers are helpful, eager to sell but not pushy. In the main part there are non shopkeepers selling post cards, small trinkets etc who do tend to hassle. What choices for the souvenir hunter, but also an interesting experience for 'only looking'!

“Great fun for an hour or two”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

So much to see in the market, lots of very interesting lacquerware and paintings. A good idea is to have a couple of things that you want to go and buy or you may find yourself distracted and not getting anything. Very nice and helpful shopkeepers who are all very willing to explain their products.
