Khinklis Sakhli is a khinkali house recommended to us specifically for their delicious khinkali (Georgian dumplings). Happy to pass this recommendation on.
It is a bit tricky to find, but is definitely worth it. I normally try different places when travelling, for the experience, but returned to Khinklis Sakhli three times.
Khinklis Sakhli is located to the right from the underground exit to the Republic Square, opposite RadissonBlu hotel. The house is large, divided into one large hall on the upper level and many smaller rooms in the basement, both smoking and non-smoking.
The atmosphere is very basic, so no dressing-up is needed. English (and Russian) menus are available.
We tried all khinkali they have, and each of us found their favourites. Mine were with meat and herbs, with cheese and with mushrooms. Though those with mushrooms were surprisingly the only ones non-juicy. Other khinkali in the menu were with meat (no herbs) and with potato.
Khinkali must be eaten while still hot, and with your hands only, no cutlery. To eat khinkali properly, take it for the top knob, turn upside down. Add black pepper or spread a sour cream on the flat bottom. Now, carefully make a small bite at its side and sip the broth/juice from it (careful! it’s hot). Then only eat the dumpling and leave the knob on the plate, to count how many you've had.
We have easily eaten 5-10 khinkali each. And wanted more! But couldn't...
If khinkali is not your cup of tea, there's other Georgian food in the menu. We tried calf ribs (excellent!), roasted chicken (not bad), Russian salad (ok) and khachapouri (could be better). But it was specifically khinkali that we returned for again and again.
They also serve alcohol, but mind that you won’t be able to get anything by glass. You can only buy the smallest bottle they have, which is 200ml for vodka, cognac or chacha and 0.5-0.75l for wine. But you are allowed to bring your own booze and drink it here.
You wouldn’t believe your eyes when you see the bill, especially if you have already dined out on Shardeni Street. Terrific value for money.
Khinklis Skhli is an excellent place to try Georgian khinkali. Check out how many you can eat!
