Stanford Hotel Seoul
Ranked #126 of 500 Hotels in Seoul
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The Stanford Hotel is in a business district of Seoul, specifically located near the DMC, or Digital Media City, where the major broadcasters are congregating in bespoke new buildings. As such it is convenient for people (like me) working with broadcasters, but a sterile zone for tourists - it could be a media park in any part of the world - and thus not recommended for a holiday stay. There are plenty of hotels downtown, including some fun boutique hotels at reasonable prices.

The Stanford is just too far away. It has a shuttle bus running to the subway station, but it is hardly instant, and is never waiting at the subway to bring residents back to the hotel (note, there is a taxi rank in the gas station beside one of the subway exits). The walk is about 25 minutes one-way, and along a dreary road beside a railway line.

The rooms are OK, hardly 4-star and above, but clean. Several colleagues had problems with the air-conditioning, and there is no minibar. As of May 2014, there is a massive development going on opposite, with 24-hour building, which is tiresome if your room faces it. Theoretically, there are sound-meters on the hoardings, to limit noise levels, but in practice it requires to know the acceptability limit, see it has been exceeded, and then ring up to complain, which is hardly ideal.

The restaurant buffet is fine, mostly Western, but limited, and remained the same selection throughout our visit.

The bar is in the basement, and lacks any atmosphere - it was largely empty during our visit. The wifi is free but slow, which is frustrating to the business user. The shop is very small and for small items you've forgotten only (toiletries, milk etc.).

Essentially, the hotel lacks any competition in the immediate area - I suspect that the moment a decent international hotel chain opens its doors in the DMC, the Stanford will either raise its game considerably, or disappear.

Room Tip: Avoid any rooms overlooking the massive building development going on at the moment!

Room service is very limited , but in fact I didn't use that. Overall is a nice hotel , but far from the center ....

The Hotel is located at the DMC (Digital Media City), one of the recently builded (re-newed) district of seoul and still under construction. But don't worry, there will be no noise that will disturb you. Its a cilent place. U can sleep even with open window. The hotel is a 4 star location and it will satisfy you. Romms are clean tidy and furnitures are proper. Downstairs is a shop, a restaurant & bar. A little more expensive than other in this area but there are a lot of fast food, coffee shops and restaurants close to the hotel. On the other hand. Its a boring area. Restaurants most of the time empty. To the Metro station it takes about 10 min by food, also in daytime a shuttle bus is available. So you get the easy access to Seoul. The Metro system is pretty good and cheap. Also taxis are alweays available and not that expensive but the taxi driver does'nt know anything. They work only by navigation system and in english is reaslly hard to communicate. The rooms are very small but the bathroom is quite nice and big enough. WLAN is for free but its not worthy to pay for it either. Other things are connection with USB and HDMI to tv from desk, charger in safe box are thing I never had before in other hotels. I never tried the breakfast. Was not possible because of the time the serve. Weekdays to late and weekend finished to soon :-). Staff was friendly, helpfull and at the reception conversation in english was good.

We stayed at Stanford hotel for our honeymoon not knowing it was a business hotel or located in a business district. Anyway it was still a good stay as they had a free shuttle bus service to the train stations and Seoul is easily accessible by train no matter where you stay so the location of the hotel didn't bother us. The rooms were a little small but still livable. Overall, it was great!

The hotel is located in the Media-City area of Seoul, which means that it's not near any tourist location nor the central shopping districts. However, taxis are easy to find and rather affordable if you want to get to Myeondong or Dongdaemun.

What was good about the hotel was the thoughtful amenities like having a charger located inside the safe, having a bidet, and even a USB connector/charger to the TV. It even has the 3 pin plug power socket which meant that I did not have to use my universal connector. Impressive.

Room Tip: Use the charger located inside the safe to charge your electronic items as you keep them secured!

Pros: Nothing in specific except that if your workplace is DMC and if you wanted to stay at a walkable distance

Cons: 1. Not a great location. Very boring surroundings 2. Extremely over priced for the service provided 3. Horrible food and quality of service. 4. They charge extra amount while you checkout and you ll be helpless.

I had a very very bad experience. I made ISD calls to India for a total of 616 seconds (10 minutes and 16 seconds) and I was charged 77, 270 Korean won for it. That is 7500 Korean Won or Rs. 450 or USD $ 8 for 1 minute which is extremely high and out of imagination.

We would be left helpless other than paying it. The usual ISD rates from any other hotel would be 1/10 th of this rate or using an international calling card is very cheap.

Never try out this Stanford hotel as its too too costly and not customer friendly. No vegetarian or halal food is available and no one understands English to help you out if any specific food is vegetarian or not.

I suggest you to avoid this hotel.
