shilla hotel is located on top of a small hill. A bit hard to explore area without a taxi or car. That said, I did not really want to leave. My room was as comfortable as could be, service was amazing. Upon check-in they knew who I was before I even opened my mouth. They whisked me to the club lounge to do my check in in comfort. Entire hotel was closed for six month for a complete renovation (how many hotels would do that?).

Again, service level was amazing.

Room Tip: I had a corner room on the 18th floor. Room was not a suite but felt like one.

We stayed for a conference in the Shilla hotel. Its a spectacular hotel with a traditional korean entrance and located up a hill. The first shop we saw upon entering the hotel was "Hermes" - kind of set the standard for this place.
Rooms are very spacious and there are many fine touches to the place - like a dim lighted number plate for room number. The automatic blinds that opens when you enter the room makes you go "wow ! " The staff do not accept tips and will kindly reject any offers of money.
However, I cant quite put my finger to this hotel - with its impeccable room, large Samsung flat screen TV and hugh toilet - I kind of miss the little guest houses that line Myeongdong.
Large 6 star hotels are for business, conference and those with little time to shop. You can buy any luxury items - either from the shops in the hotel or at the duty free department located just 5 mins walk downhill from the hotel. All the branded stuff and more. BUT, its inconvenient.
To reach to Myeongdong by shuttle bus or the hotel shuttle to the subway, you have to wait for the bus and in the morning and during peak hours, the wait can be pretty long and boring. ( no seats and no shelter )
Small guest houses are cosy and conveniently located to shopping centers. Good food and local pubs and coffee houses line the roads around these guest houses.
So, depending on your personal preferences, much like taking a airline business class seat vs a economic class seat - its your choice !

The anniversary of 9-11 made me think again of the Shilla. For 10 years I regularly stayed at this hotel on business trips. Early on I happened to be on the back end of a 4 week around the world trip and at the Shilla. Coming home from dinner in Itaewon to pack abd go home in the morning, I happened to notice the World Trade Center burning on my rooms TV. As the night wore on, It became clear we'd not be going home anytime soon.

The hotels GM met our group the following morning. The always exceptional service level of the Shilla ramped up even more for those of us trapped. Arrangements were made for us to keep our rooms indefinitely. A memorial service was arranged for hotel guests wishing to attend. Grief counselors were available for those who wished for counsel. A young lady on my floor lived in an apartment that she could see burning on the TV news and so benefited.

I've stayed a lot of places around the world and can confidently say the Shilla is my favorite. There are bigger, fancier hotels around, but none have the long standing commitment to service that the Shilla does. It's the only place I stay in Seoul. I must have lived there for the better part of a year over all of my trips!

Room Tip: Stay on the Executive floors. It's worth the small upcharge

This hotel has a very grand feeling to it. The moment you enter the lobby, you cannot help but be awed by its crystal ceiling decor. The rooms are very spacious and the thing that will catch your attention at once is the huge television in the room and with very good HD channels. The toilet is unique with a warm seat and automatic flush. The bed is so comfortable with soft pillows. But they could improve on the food in the restaurant, though.

I stayed here during three weeks end of 2008. The hotel is just ten minutes' walk from where I needed to go to work everyday. It is located on a small hill. Excellent service, excellent quality. Free afternoon tea when you stay on the business floors. Breakfast choices were large.

My wife and I had International buffet dinner last Wednesday (14 Aug 13) at the Parkview, Shilla in Seoul. For the quality of the food at the price of KR100,000 per person was not worth it. Out of the three assessment elements : Quality, Variety and Taste, The Parkview fared badly in terms of taste. It seemed that food was not well marinated and lacked taste. As for variety, it was not the best. Bread was missing from the buffet menu. As for quality, the couple besides us left within half-an-hour. Apparently, I saw one of them 'smelt' the food on the plate, made some unpleasant facial expression, talked a short while with disappointment, picked their bags and left. Not sure if I was right but seemed that one item was not fresh based on my interpretation of their behaviour. Moreover, the venue was quite warm due to the direct sunset shines. Worse, for the price, you had to choose one of the 2 buffer timing : 5:30pm - 7:30pm or 8:00pm to 10:00pm.
