Look to find some quirky items on the menu from your standard Outback experience in the States. Koreans like sweet and rich, so the menu's changes sometimes to suit the needs. If you stick to simple menu items then they come out all about the same.

We used to love Outback and go as a special treat for 'Western' food once in a while. Their ribs, the cheese fries, and the baked potatoes were at one time real luxuries (certainly unavailable anywhere outside of Seoul). However, the menu has slowly been shifting towards a more Koreanized palate - fair enough, but you can get good Korean food almost anywhere in the country! - and the prices have risen even as quality has dropped. Cheese fries, for example, USED to have actual cheese melted on them, and a generous handful of bacon. Now they have been drizzled with a cheese-like sauce and a few mournful scatters of bacon bits. No longer worth it. Sorry, my dear blue cheese dip and real sour cream...I'll miss you!

As long-time residents, my American-Korean family sometimes goes to this Australian themed American steak house chain. There are better steaks in Korea but they are much more expensive. And there are cheaper ways to order beef, but the preparation is very different. So we look at Outback as a compromise.

Now, other reviewers ask why go to a Western steak house when visiting Korea? That is a legitimate question.

On the other hand, if one has an irrepressible craving for a Western-style steak, Outback is a safe bet given its many locations. And they must be doing something right. I've never visited an Outback that was not crowded. By Seoul pricing standards, what you get is reasonably priced and the serving staff is incredibly well trained. So on weekends and holidays it is advisable to make reservations - or be prepared to wait more than 20 minutes for a table to become available.

The biggest negative, in my opinion, is that the restaurants have changed the menu to cater to Korean adolescent tastes. That means, they use too much sugar in almost everything. I now order my steaks without topping since the Korean Outbacks must provide some of the sweetest steak sauces on the planet. The steaks by themselves are great, however. The coconut prawns are also sweet - many people like them, but I can easily pass on them.

The chicken is a surprise item that is probably the healthiest preparation of chicken you can find in Korea and the generous steamed vegetable side order is also done extremely well for the diet and health conscious.

So, if you understand the menu, there is something for everyone at Outback. It's not cheap but neither very expensive. You just have to be careful in how you order - and the cooks are reasonably flexible.
