“Very good budget hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2010

Nothing to complain about, clean room, good services, breakfast was ok. Pick up taxi from airport was arranged, although broken down on the way to hotel but those things are common in Cairo, not hotel's fault. A bit noisy at night, facing main traffic road, but for us no problem at all. Wireless worked. Did sightseeings by ourselves, can not judge their tour. Overall we would recommend Isis to fellow budget travelers.

I stayed at Isis Hotel for a total of 5 nights, 4 at the beginning of my trip, and 1 night at the end of it. I booked over email, and the staff were accommodating and friendly right from the start. They helped organize trips and tours, and gave reliable, honest advice, and I felt I was really getting good value for what I was paying. The hotel itself is situated on the top floor of an office building, and the reception/lounge area is very inviting. Was welcomed with free Egyptian Tea! The room was tidy and well presented, and even though I opted for a shared bathroom - the bathroom was clean at all times. The room had a balcony and offered spectacular views over the city, and the lounge balcony provided amazing views over the other side of Cairo. I could see the Egyptian Museum from my window, and it was no more than a 4 minute walk to it from the hotel. The breakfast that was included was very good, and was more than enough to get me through the busy days!
The tours that the hotel organized for me were all private, and the driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Very good value for money considering you would pay twice as much for shared tours with other companies. Also, there is free internet and wireless, something which I only discovered towards the end of my stay, but an added bonus!
All in all, it was a great experience. Was great talking to and getting to know the staff, and I felt perfectly safe and comfortable! For what you are paying you simply cannot beat it!
Wanted to say a special big thanks to Yasser, my tour guide, and Medhad, who along with everyone else I met at the hotel, made my first trip to Egypt a truly amazing experience!

The hotel is situated about a 10 minute walk from the Egyptian museum which is an absolute must see and about the same from downtown. It is on the same main road as the museum but around the corner where it is not so busy. The entrance looks like it should have spare parts for cars. It is shabby and dirty but don't let this put you off. The elevator is also filthy as is the floor, walls, doors, carpets leading into the hotel. Fortunatly the hotel itself is clean, a small oasis in Cairo. The rooms, bedding and bathrooms are all clean. Shower is drizzly but ok. There is a social area with internet and TV. The best part of this hotel is the staff. They are extremly helpful and nice people. They will also organise tours at a good price with a driver if required. Yes the driver will drive like a crazy person but that goes with the territory. Airport pickup is included if you are staying a few nights. This hotel is suitable for families or groups as well as backpackers. Basic needs without the frills

My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Isis Hotel. The free airport pick-up service was very halpful. Although not super-luxurious, the room was very clean and homey. The entire staff was super-helpful and friendly. They helped us plan our tours. The Luxor trip was wonderful thanks to their help and suggestions. In my opinion, you get a lot for their very reasonable rates at this hotel.
Best regards to everyone at Isis Hotel, Lauren E., U.S.A.

THE AREA

Isis Hotel is situated around 2 - 5 minutes walk from the Egyptian museum ( in fact, we could see the museum from the balconies ) and surrounded by main roads, that have a lot of shops and restaurants. The best thing about this hotel are the following : a) The staff ( Moodi, Hamada, Hamdi, Meghdi the taxi driver and others ) b) The cleanliness of the rooms and c) the efforts in truly accomodating you in every way. Being that Cairo can be overwhelming at first, it is so nice to be welcomed into a hotel where it feels like a home. My boyfriend and I are very adventurous, budget - middle of the way travelers who like to do everything on our own ( we avoid package tours with travel agencies, and research everything on our own for the first 6 months of us traveling anywhere with our trusty Lonely Planet book, reviews on Virtual Tourist, BootsnAll and of course, Trip Advisor. Hence, due to our traveling style, we managed to explore the area around the hotel...such as the back streets where you get to find small " ma and pa " shops, great kushari and pizza restaurants, cafes where you can smoke sheeshas etc. Do not worry about the people - they will look at you but other than that, they stay away from you and are friendly when approached.

Here's a step by step :
1) THE ENTRANCE / MAIN LOBBY ON THE GROUND FLOOR
At first, my boyfriend and I were so shocked at the state of it. It looked like the entrance of a dirty garage or some sort of halfway house...with broken mail boxes, signs of other businesses and very dusty and grey. Now, DO NOT BE ALARMED! This is only the entrance of the main office building itself ( for the hotel is actually one of the many businesses that are operating on that single office building - Hotel Isis is on the 15th floor ). The entrance is not reflective of the actual hotel itself but rather the state of all Egyptian buildings. After all, Isis is in the older part of Cairo ( the newer part being past the October 6th bridge where all the rich expat or Cairenes live ).

2) The elevator is hideous...but it's workable.

3) LOBBY OF ISIS HOTEL
It is how it looks in the pictures included in the reviews by other customers of the past. However, it is very clean ( despite being old ). The minute you get in, the staff are extremely polite, courteous and friendly! The internet use ( being free and unlimited ) is one of the best perks of the hotel. You feel like you're at home and can easily reconnect everywhere at anytime.

4) THE STAFF
The staff are AMAZING! After a long 20 hours flight, it is nice to know that the hotel's personal taxi driver ( Meghdi - a very small, kind, smiley old man with white hair and glasses ) will come and personally pick you up from the airport, regardless of the flight time. We came in at 2 am, and we got a FREE airport pick up. They provide this service if you are staying longer than 2 days of course, which I am sure you will, since it is so cheap to stay! ( $ 40 US for a huge double room, with your own private bathroom and shower ). The main owner ( Hamada ) is a very jovial, tall, friendly man with glasses. He seems to be quite educated as he owns the place, designs the website, does the main communications and advertisement with clients and comes in with a suit. It pays a lot to be very friendly with them, for they give a lot of very honest opinions on what to do in Cairo or touts etc. They do try to sell their own hotel packages on a daily basis but this is normal in Cairo. In fact, if I wasn't such a meticulous and organised planner, I would've taken one of their tour packages for they are cheap! ( Example : Complete tour to Giza pyramids, Saqqara, Dahshur and Memphis in a private car with a private English speaking guide costs only $ 35 PER PERSON ...which is amazing, judging from the actual amount of traveling, haggling and planning we had to do on our own just to get there. Our itinerary came out not that much cheaper too ). They are also very accomodating with a lot of your requests. ( They offered to let me use the kitchen at any time if I want to cook something, since I like to go into the local supermarkets, buy my own stuff and cook - as I have a very strict pescetarian / vegetarian diet ). However, they also recommend amazing restaurants within walking distance from the hotel, to be helpful in your need to explore trustworthy local eateries that won't make you ill. I also noticed that they are so friendly and helpful with their customers, that customers from previous years keep on coming back. When I was in the lobby, chatting with Moodi, a whole family came in and they gave each other warm hugs, happy " hellos " and " welcome backs " which is indicative of previous, satisfying stays from the past.

5) THE ROOMS
We booked an ensuite room - double room, with our own private shower and toilet. It was amazing, in that for the age and the dirt in Cairo, it's relatively clean, well kept and tidy. The rooms are also huge. I like the fact that EVERYDAY, the staff clean the rooms meticulously by changing the sheets and pillow cases, tidying up the bathroom, replacing all the garbage bags etc. The only thing I had a problem with was with the shower floor....since it is quite old, you can see a bit of greying, browning at the sides ( indicative of years of use ). I would recommend bringing your own rubber flip flops to step into the shower during washing. However, other than that, we also had a great balcony. The fact that the rooms are so high up ( 15th floor ), we were afforded such a great sleep every night we stayed. We couldn't hear a single thing except the 4am and 5 am morning prayers call from the mosque like structure down below...but then again, in Egypt, you are supposed to hear the prayers from everywhere!

OVERALL : A definite recommendation.

You couldn't ask for better than the Isis. Located close to the Nile river and very close to the Egyptian museum. Staff friendly and helped organise a 6 day trip down the Nile. (Although perhaps one night on a felucca would have been enough). Mohammed (owner) was very helpful in organising everything and the other staff good for locations to see. Even helping find a cheap local restaurant for dinner - which was delicious and ridiculously cheap Egyptian food. Getting collected from the airport was a bonus, and the driver stopped at an ATM for me to get some cash. When the ATM swallowed my card he then assisted me to interpret with the bank manager to get my card for which I was very grateful. Would stay here again for sure.

The hotel is located on the 16th floor of a commercial building just 300 metres from the Egyptian museum. It is serviced by 2 lifts: one goes to the 15th floor the other only goes as far as the 14th floor. However, the walk up to the 16th floor is well lit and easy. There is a permanent security person on the ground floor so it is fairly safe. The view from the hotel floor is excellent - view of the Nile from the reception area and the citadel from rooms on the rear.

A Mitsubishi car dealer next door to the left makes it easy for taxi drivers to locate the place. And the United Bank is just next door to the right: with an ATM that dispenses currency change from 9am to 7pm for the major currencies - and the rates are very competitive too!

The 3 reception staffs: Mohamed Ali, Mektad and Hossam are all friendly and helpful.

Breakfast is simple but adequate: lots of buns with butter and jam, and a simple egg-only omelette. It comes served with coffee or tea.

Egyptian restaurants are plentiful on Maarof street (100 metres behind). Abu Tariq is apparently very famous for Koshari. The reception can even take order on behalf for room delivery. We had 2 Kosharis and one-quarter kilo kebab delivered for 35 Egyptian pounds.

The hotel charges 1 egyptian pound per piece of laundry. Mineral water is available for 3 egyptian pounds for a 2-litre bottle. Airport transfer is USD11 for one way (you probably could get a better deal using metred taxi - the white ones). Be careful not to use the old black taxis as they are unmetered and due to be phased out in the next year or two.

We had a triple room (604) and it was spacious. The bedsheets were clean and the towels changed daily. It was air-conditioned but you have to request the remote control from the reception as they use a common one for all the rooms.

For Catholic travellers, St Joseph catholic church at 4 Ahmad Sabri in Zamalek (high end residential- embassy area) has Sunday mass at 11am in French and 6pm in English. We took a white taxi (metered) and it cost 8 egyptian pounds ( Beware that the old Black taxis are not metered and are due to be phased out in the next couple of years). The reception will arrange for someone to escort you down to hail a white taxi and inform the taxi of your destination.

The price savings from staying at a 4-5 star hotel is rather substantial: more than enough for me to hire a private guide with a driver in a modern air-conditioned van for 2 full days to visit all the sites in Cairo (including a 2 hour felucca ride on the Nile arranged through ISIS hotel), plus a day trip to Alexandria, and a relaxing fourth day with movie at City Stars (the largest and modern shopping centre in Nasser City).

Hope this helps those who have a budget to watch but yet want to have a complete experience in Cairo.
