Well-situated well-run small hotel

Review of Berlin Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Jun 2017
I stayed at this 12-room hotel for ten days in late March, and was completely satisfied. Mr Hisham Youssif, the hotel owner, speaks good English, and the receptionist, Amal, has the basics. There is always someone there to help you. The hotel will also provide information, and make arrangements. For example, I took an eight-hour taxi tour with their regular driver to Giza, Sakkara, Darshur and Memphis. It was very reasonable..

If I hesitate to give the hotel a 5-star rating, it is only because it shares a few disadvantages with its setting. Cairo is noisy and dusty, and can be very uncomfortable in the summer when extra-hot and humid too. While the Berlin is on the top, fourth, floor of an early 20th century building with a working elevator, the only way fully to counter these factors is to stay in a large and fully air-conditioned hotel, probably some way from the experiences that make Cairo most memorable. You will pay much more of course.

Central and Islamic Cairo are (just) walkable for the tourist. The Berlin faces onto one of downtown’s major shopping streets (Sharia Qasr el-Nil) and is about ten minutes’ walk from the Egyptian Museum and Tahrir Square.

To get to other destinations in this large capital city it makes most sense to take one of Cairo’s myriad taxis. If you wish, the hotel will flag one down, decide if the driver knows the destination and tell you an agreed fare. The cab ride will cost $1-2, unless you are going outside the city (e.g. to the Giza pyramids). In a taxi, as elsewhere, it feels good to give a tip, and it makes sense to have plenty of small change when possible.

At the same time, remember that many “guides”, salespeople and proprietors of shops will approach you under the guise of friendship but with the ulterior motive of selling you something.

At the Berlin you will get the same basic breakfast each day. Most of the rooms are large (2-3 beds) and have a television. One uses one of the clean toilets and showers provided without any problems. There are several good and cheap restaurants nearby. You will be set up, if at all adventurous, to explore a city that has drawn travelers for centuries, and to discover the friendliness and hospitality extended to all.

In French and in English...

A really nice and funny little hotel, very well located in down town Cairo, close to everything and the really helpful owner and staff will help you to book taxis and so on at a fair price. This hotel is also close to pretty much everything you may need and the restaurant GAD near by serves good local food and it is not expensive at all...

Room tip: The deluxe with private shower, AC and cable TV with chanels from all over the world is a good choice indeed.

The hotel provided an airport pick-up and drop-up service for a reasonable price, which avoided some headaches. They can arrange tours for you, although I didn't use this service. The rooms are basic but clean. It's an old Parisian-style building with rooms with big windows and high ceilings, so at the time of year I went (January) it was quite cold. My room had an en suite shower with reliable hot water, and a shared toilet. A simple breakfast is included, and they provided it for me at 5.30am one morning when I had to depart early on a trip. It's best point is the location. It's right in the centre of downtown, so there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, shops, banks and cinemas close by, and Tahrir Square is about 10 minutes walk away. My sleep wasn't disturbed by noise late at night. A good budget choice if you want to be in the centre of things.

We are a family of four and Berlin Hotel suited our budget and needs. Staff were extremely helpful and courteous. It's basic facilities were what you'd expect at this price, including simple delicious breakfast. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Berlin hotel is old fashioned hotel in the downtown of Cairo. It is near to Cairo museum (10 min by walk), Cairo train station (20 min walk), in the walking distance (5 min) are Metro stations as well. There are a lot of restaurants and fast-foods nearby. Rooms are clean and comfortable.Bathrooms are clean and everything worked fine. The manager is very helpful and knowledgable and can arrange airport shuttle taxi even in very early morning hours for very reasonable prices and nice trip to Sakkara, Dahsur and Memphis museum for very fair price as well. No pressure tacticts. This is budget hotel, so breakfast is simple and wifi signal is weak in the room (but OK in the reception hall), rooms are quite noisy - it is in the downtown, anyway (but no problem with earplugs :)).

Excellent location in downtown Cairo, however it's only very average. The service is great as they are very nice and friendly although the night guard doesn't speak English. What lacks most is cleanliness...shared bathrooms/toilet and kitchen were just plain dirty and the room and in room shower were also very questionable. The sheets were clean though. Good mattresses. Very noisy as right in the Main Street. Decent breakfast included in the room. No laundry. You can find cheaper and much better one street away (Dahab Hostel for exemple).
