Cairo is a difficult city for a first time western visitor, even if you have been to other North African cities. Cairo is huge, extremely noisy and dirty. The average citizen believes in negotiating everything, which make every taxi ride, every souvenir, every purchase in a corner grocery a haggle.
This hotel, like other major international hotels, is comfortable, although not exceptional. The views on the higher floors (17th) are worth photographing: the views of the city and the Nile give a sense of the size and importance of Cairo.
The swimming pool is pleasant. The food is middling but acceptable. Some in our group were unhappy on lower floors. My wife received slow service when she went for a snack alone, but service is generally slow. It was not inexpensive for what we received.
We went for a professional congress, and spent several days seeing the antiquities.

I'm surprised at the uneven reviews -- we were generally quite pleased with this hotel. The location is perfect: downtown, on the Nile, a couple of blocks from the Egyptian Museum. The facilities and service are fine, and you can take a stroll along the Nile in the evening without major apprehension. (Cairo is remarkably safe for a city it's size -- there are pickpockets, like everywhere else, but crime against tourists is unusual.)

I would NOT advise paying extra for the hotel's "club service." It sounds like a good deal -- free internet access, free breakfasts and dinners, free drinks in the evening, etc. -- but we used only the breakfast, which would have been much cheaper by itself. We never got back to the hotel in time for the free booze, which is from 6 to 8 only (we arrived one night at 8:05 and the bar was shut tight), and we dined out, at nearby downtown restaurants recommended by the concierge and our friends. (Why would anyone travel all the way to Cairo and then eat hotel food for dinner?) Wireless Internet access is free in the club area, but the wired access in the rooms is faster, more convenient, and not nearly expensive enough to justify the club charge. So unless your idea of travel is sitting around the hotel drinking, the club service is a waste of money.

As an aside, I totally believe and completely sympathize with the women traveling alone who were treated shabbily by waiters and others -- but that's a cultural problem in Egypt (and the Middle East) in general, not at this or any other specific Egyptian hotel. Which is no excuse, of course -- if I ran a hotel chain I would make that nonsense a terminatable offense, regardless of the country.

The front desk people were fine, the room was okay. The maid service was lax and late. Four night stay and only once was room made up before 5 pm. Then they came back at six and wanted to turn down the beds. The worst is the service in the lobby bars, coffee shops and restaurants. Women traveling alone, ie, two women at a table with no man get no service. If you stick it out and wait while everyone else is served and they then stand around and ignore you, you may get served in thirty minutes or so. When we finally figured out their system, we would get a man from our tour group to come sit with us until we got our coffee or drinks. That seemed to work okay when someone was available. Oddly enough, the Birdcage restaurant upstairs was very nice and had good service. And, women served last and reluctantly at pool, too. Seriously, go to City Stars. They are wonderful. When we got there the last day of our tour after being sick for several days on a horrible Nile cruise by Viking, they were wonderful. The buffet at the lobby restaurant was closed and the menu limited. I asked if they could make me a grilled cheese sandwich and after some discussion between me and the waiter and then the waiter and the chef, I had a lovely three layer sandwich containing some different mild cheeses and thinly sliced tomatoes. After several days of old food that made the passengers ill, this was the promised land. Service, food, and drink at City Stars all wonderful. Semiramis and City Stars are both supposed to be 5 star. Wrong. Give two or three of Semiranis' stars to City Stars.

Review title says it all. The hotel was a lovely -- clean, professional, reliably decent food. But they were not pleased to see me check in as a single woman and in fact went ahead and put me in a room with my male colleague. And then refused to look up my individual reservation, when I objected to the room assignment. This was eventually worked out.

Also, single woman, beware the male housekeeping staff who are inclined to follow you into your room to demand tips. Friendly, but intimidating.

Better luck at the Marriott. I plan to stay there next time.
