“agatha Christie atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014 via mobile

one of the rare old Egypt hotels in downtown Cairo; the old British officers club, dusty but friendly, grand decor, the old piano bar upstairs is a piece of mahogany history, where nostalgic Armenians and Greeks gather for a discreet beer away from the hectic street. efficiently run by a Coptic family and some Muslim staff, they deserve respect for plying their trade in these uncertain times.

When you enter Windsor Hotel in Downtown, Cairo, it is like entering a time warp. The experience is amazing and unique.
The first thing you meet in the lobby (despite a happy smile from the receptionist) is the old wooden Schindler elevator. It is said to be one of the oldest manually-operated elevators in the world. Have the operator of the elevator take you to 1st floor.

Here you find the restaurant and the bar. At the walls you will find well-kept letters from the beginning of the 1900s and photos of old moviestars staying at the hotel. The restaurant and bar are in dark wooden design and the furnitures are beautiful and comfortable. The bar used to serve as British Officers Club during WWII and you'll find interior kept from that time. Sit down, enjoy a beer in these unique historical surroundings.

The hotel is owned by the Doss-family, whom you will definitely meet during your stay. I had been welcomed with such a warmth by the family and the staff, that I immediately felt like home. If you ask, they can tell you great stories about the hotel - and they are happy to do it. When I return to Cairo in the fall, I know where to go to feel home.

I can only give Windsor Hotel my best recommendations.

I always go to the Windsor Hotel when I'm in Cairo. It is in a really nice neighbourhood, books ( Ezbekiah Gardens) and newspapers ( Sharia 26th July) close by, and also Tahrir Square (West) and Islamic Cairo (East). Hotel itself beautiful with dark wood everywhere, I've seen all the rooms, but the best thing for me is of course the Barrel Bar, beautifully decorated, big chairs and couches, very good food ( International and Egyptian) and really great staff. For the past 7 years, when in Cairo, there's not been 1 night I have not been in the Barrel Bar, and they were great nights. Highly recommended, so hello to Wagdy and colleague from the B. Bar, Marylise and your father, manager and all the others , see you next year, Elisa

While the city of Cairo has no shortage of charms, I have to confess that I would visit even if only for a brief stay at the Windsor. The Windsor is perhaps the only hotel from the era of "Grand Hotels" in Egypt that hasn't been eaten by an international chain and rather than refurbishing their facilities with marble and gold fittings they've managed to preserve the nostalgic wonder of their original interiors. The Windsor's wooden carriage lift is one of the oldest functioning lifts of its sort. Every room at the hotel is unique and has its own charm - but think high ceilings, balconies, wooden desks, and elegant coatracks. The rooms, given how expansive and well-decorated they are, are very well priced.

You can have coffee and breakfast sent up without even leaving your bed via the old black phone on each nightstand, or saunter downstairs for breakfast in the restaurant. The Windsor lounge is a popular spot for Cairenes to come and have a drink. Its a convenient place to host/meet guests while staying at the hotel.

The hotel's location is perfect - in the heart of downtown yet on its own quiet(er) lane of off 26th July street - which means you're not only in the center of Cairo's hustle and bustle but a short walk (or cab-ride for the inactive sort) from the Nile, Khan-el-Khalili bazaar, Zamalek, and the myriad of mosques and tombstones in Cairo's older quarters.

The staff at the Windsor is what makes this place most wonderful. Over multiple stays at the Windsor I've had to get clothes tailored, luggage mended, and visit the hospital - all of which the staff handled as if I was family. Plus all the usual: same day dry cleaning, airport transfers, sightseeing...Very few hotels in this day and age retain not only the charm of bygone days but also the spirit and the service. I have found only the Windsor...

Room Tip: No two rooms at the Windsor are alike and this is part of the charm. Rooms also vary in price - so o...

It was my 3rd visit to Cairo & I always stay at the Windsor as it is my home in Cairo. The staff is very helpful, the rooms are big, comfortable and clean. Breakfast is ok. I like the way Windsor is kept as it is full of history and I feel I am living in the past among family and friends.

Location is hard to find. Extremely noisy all hours of day and night. Hotel needs urgent and long overdue renovation. The bed mattress is hard as a rock, it's as if you were sleeping on the wood floor. The air conditioner while on does not cool the room. When taking a shower, you need to turn the water on for at least 10 to 15 minutes, before you get hot water which is completely wasteful. The TV sets are very old, with bad reception, and only a few local channels, some of which you get no sound. Hotel does not respond to your e-mails, and did not provide the airport transfer requested even after they were asked to do so. The only thing going for this hotel is that it has a decent Bar.

This is my regular hotel when I come to Egypt for archaeological field work each year. It is classic, comfortable, has a wonderful bar and the staff are wonderful. This year I attended a conference for a week and stayed the whole time here. As others have noted, the owner Wafeeq checks with all the guest individually to ensure they are comfortable. He has been here since 1962, which says a lot about the owner's dedication. This year I had a special request and wanted to invite a group of the conference delegates to the hotel for drinks and nibbles. The staff were only too helpful with this and my guests had a wonderful time, while expressing their desire to stay in this hotel next time. While other Egyptian hotels are changing their business strategy to accommodate the indigenous business travellers due to a lack of foreign tourists, the owner is committed to remaining loyal to his traveller clientele, so we should support him.
