Owner description: This massive stone fortress, built by Salah ad-Din in the 12th century, was crowned with the Mosque of Mohammed Ali 700 years later.

Salah Al-Deen (know as Saladin to European historians) overthrew the Fatimid dynasty in 1171 AD, establishing the new Sunni Ayyubid Caliphate. Given the threat of invasion by European crusader armies, Saladin decided to improve the fortifications of the city and in 1176 AD he began construction of a wall that would encircle both Al-Qahira (today Islamic) and Fustat (Old Cairo).

The Citadel became the centerpiece of these great fortifications, protecting the city from the heights of the rocky hills that overlooked it. Completed in 1183 AD, Saladin’s Citadel served as the seat of government in Egypt for 700 years until Khedive Ismail moved into Abdin Palace in newly constructed Downtown Cairo in the 1870’s.
Never miss visiting it and viewing Cairo the whole city and taking great photos from up there.

The view from the Mosque at the Citadel is incredible - even the pyramids are visible. Go with a guide to get the full explanation.

Time warp--this signifies an era and locale that most Westerners don't appreciate. Adjacent to and a part of the Mohammad Ali Mosque, a visit to the two will expand one's appreciation of Egyptian distinction.

While on a brief business trip I was fortunate enough to spend a weekend touring key areas of Cairo with a local colleague as my personal guide. There's nothing quite like exploring a foreign place with those who were born and raised there. The Citadel was so much more than what I expected. It was a great lesson in culture and history. The views from the top are incredible and the mosque is exceptional in its architecture and artistry. It was an experience I will not soon forget.
