Owner description: This massive stone fortress, built by Salah ad-Din in the 12th century, was crowned with the Mosque of Mohammed Ali 700 years later.

The Citadel and the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali sit perched on hill overlooking Cairo and hence offer a great view of the city. The Mosque itself is quite large and well decorated. It is constructed from the alabaster covering of the pyramids which is a shame.

The Citadel and the mosque of Mohamed Ali are one of the attractions that should not be missed! Firstly, you get excellent views of all of Cairo, the mosque otself is grand with intricate wrought iron work on its windows and marble columns and floors. There are also a few kiosks that sell snacks, although they are quite overpriced. There is also a nice restaurant for a more serious meal if that is your preference.

The Citadel and mosque of Mohamed Ali are a favorite of mine. It is a very nice place to spend the day. You will do some walkiing and there is a slight climb to get to the entrance on foot. Cars were allowed in before, but since June of 2013, only toursit buses are allowed to the main entrance where the ticket offices are.

Highly recommend it!

A great place to visit within the Citadel walls are the Egyptian Police Museum and the MIlitary Museum. Very entertaining with a lot on display although you might need a guide or translator because most of the signs are in Arabic.

Of great interest to those familiar with Egypt's relatively more modern history, namely that eislamic and Mameluke history.

A lovely citadel and fortifications overlooking a magnificent view of Cairo and particularly the part called city of the living dead. If you enjoy citadels and fortifications this is just the thing for you when in Egypt.

The best attraction, once inside, is the Mohammed Ali Mosque, a true work of art, marble, alabaster and woodwork with excellent craftsmanship in excellent condition. Spend some time inside this beautiful mosque and enjoy the serenity then stroll outside for the break thanking view just beyond it's doors.

From the citadel you get a great view of the city but unfortunately there is not much else to see. The mosque was interesting but not fantastic. The military museum was disjointed and unclear. Sorry to say this is not a recommended stop.
