Fascinating and educational.

Cairo is scary, exciting, humbling, nerve wracking.....and a must to visit.

Very exciting.

I have not been to Israel, but have seen orthodox churches with splendid icons and wall paintings - in Turkey and elsewhere. So the art within is less impressive than the venerable story and character of the sites. But going to Coptic Cairo is a sort of pilgrimmage - if you're lucky (like we were) and it's open, descend into the crypt where it is said (if apocryphally) that Mary, Joseph and Jesus rested on their flight into Egypt, see the icons of the saints in the church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, visit the old synagogue and hanging church nearby. Our guide took us only to the usually visited places, so I was somewhat disappointed, because I think there is probably much more to see in Coptic Cairo than we saw. The medieval part of the city is, no doubt, the most interesting - like Morocco where the entire Medina is a warren of streets. Just don't buy anything from the shops in the alley on the way to the sites - they're very overpriced. You can try bargaining, or just ask your guide (if he's not taking kickbacks) where to get some "Egyptian" rather than tourist prices.

What an incredible place to visit, particularly the old churches (the hanging church in particular). Most importantly, is learning about the history of the Egyptian church and the persecution they have endured. Visiting the Jewish synagog was also incredible -- a must see when visiting Cairo.

Well certainly the walkways are antiquated but there are some neat sites and old ornate doors to some of the buildings. Also there is Abu Serga church and only Jewish Synagogue in Cairo. Now I cannot recall if this is in old part but we did go to it. I also like the book sellers whose books lined the walls.
