“Egyptian hospitality without the chaos and frenzy”
Reviewed 13 April 2010

Very friendly and helpful staff, albeit at their own pace. Clean and comfortable room. The shower was a bit unpredictable - water pressure sometimes low, and shower holder in such a position you had to hold the head to shower properly. Single glazing allowed background street noise through - but I actually quite enjoyed the constant reminder we were in a vibrant, in-your-face city. Amenities fairly basic, but included internet cafe and bar. Although not immediately next to key tourist areas, it is well situated to get to them all within a 5 minute taxi ride.

The friendliness of the staff and cleanliness of the rooms were the best features. Shower was definitely the worst. Given the price, I thought this was a great value way of feeling closer to the city without exposure to the chaos and frenzy that is downtown Cairo. In the Marriotts/Hiltons/Four Seasons not only do you pay a whack more, you also are hermetically sealed from the world outside.

I can only conclude that other recent reviewers were lucky. Faded glory is a gross exaggeration and misrepresentation of this nightmare place. The rooms are smelly, whereas mine didn't have toilet paper, or hot water! Many of the staff are rude and think only of one thing, to scam you and get as much 'bakshish' (tips) out of you that they can. It is an insult that they even dare to charge for the rubbish they call a breakfast. In general, the food offered by the 'restaurant' is inedible and should come with a health warning. The internet facility is a joke. When you check out, double-check the bill, since you'll invariably end up paying for services you didn't use and be prepared for some lengthy negotiation. In short, do not stay there!

We stayed at the Victoria for the second time in three years. The rooms a very Egyptian and good value. Staff are very friendly and helpful. However I would not recommend eating in the restaurant. My wife waited over 30 mins for a simple meal before walking out in disgust. Food was cold and late. and not very appertising. I would recommend that you choose any of the many eating places within short distance. The two elderly door men are really helpful and deserve tipping. Ask the reception staff for the directions to the famous Koshary restaurant , well worth a visit.
In addition to the usual tourist sites take some time to wander the nearby streets to get a real flavour for Cairo.
Be careful of un official guides who will accost you in the street. Firmly and politely say NO.
In general me and my family enjoyed staying here and would recommend the Victoria , just have your wits about you.

paid £40 a night for a large twin room via Internet. Looked in on this place while staying at the dreary Windsor down the road and decided to swap as the Victoria is superior in every way-cleaner, brighter, cosier public sitting areas and more staff on duty. Rooms also more comfortable however ,garden patio and shop bit neglected. Lift wasn't very reliable so you could end up with a long walk to rooms. Check your room phone is connected too before relying on an early morning call. Handy for station but a 10 min walk to cafes , restaurants. Be warned-downtown Cairo very dirty and run down. Walking the streets is not for the faint hearted!

The Victoria was great-clean rooms, wonderful staff, and a historic atmosphere. Rooms were beautiful with antiques, hotel was quiet. We had been staying at budget hotels, and splurged here our last couple nights in Cairo and we fell in love with the hotel. They also have a fabulous breakfast.

I booked this hotel direct via email/phone, which was very straightforward, and when we arrived it was a delightful surprise. It was like stepping into the past in terms of appearance and atmosphere. The staff provided charming hospitality and assistance when requested, almost as you would have received 80 years ago! The location is terrific if you want to experience the real Cairene life, and there are some fascinating back street alleys and markets to be explored, which you would miss if you stayed at a modern western hotel on the Nile. The Hotel Victoria has charm and atmosphere in abundance; the central stairway is original worn stone carpeted and very broad, there is a single original central lift that is still in good working order-if you look you can see it is external to the building!. The rooms have parquet floors and large fully opening windows, the ensuite is the size of a bedroom and with modern fittings. The furniture is old colonial dark wood, with a lovely dressing table set, and armchairs and table also comfortably placed in the spacious rooms.
In the enormous lobby there is more seating, and double doors open to an even bigger lounge filled with overstuffed leather sofas surrounding low coffee tables large potted plants, and chandeliers overhead. A waiter dressed smartly in black and white wanders around tidying as he goes awaiting a request from a guest for a drink or sandwich. From here there is an external door to the covered patio and internet room, which is great value as you just pay by the hour. From the lounge there is another glass door through to the atmospheric and traditional bar, the bartender offers bowls of nuts alongside the cold beer. At the entrance to the Victoria Hotel there is a small curio/gift shop, and the two very elderly doormen wave and smile and offer to get you a taxi or carry your bags in or out.
In short, I wish every hotel I stayed at could be like the Victoria Hotel in Cairo, and I will never forget this amazing experience.
