Owner description: After the Muslims conquered Egypt in 641 AD, they built their city, Al-Fustat, on what is now the southern border of modern Cairo. Today, this section of the city contains many important sites including the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, Mosque of al-Azhar and the Khan al-Khalili market, which is considered the heart of this area.

“Very historical...some places are sketch”
Reviewed 10 August 2013

I would definitely not miss this area of Cairo, it is very old. It is not really anything like the rest of Cairo or Giza. It has a lot more poor that hang around and it is not very touristy. If you love history read up and hit this part of Cairo

“My first Mosque visit”
Reviewed 5 August 2013

This was the first time I entered a Mosque. Beautiful, peaceful, homey, and interesting, this Mosque allowed for foreigners to enter it, without shoes, and women had to cover themselves with robes that were provided to them.

“Great place to wander”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

Islamic Cairo is a great area for just wandering the streets and poking into back alleys. There is some amazing architecture here and the way of life in this part of the city has gone virtually unchanged for centuries. This is definitely my favorite part of Cairo because you never quite know what you will discover as you turn each corner. If you are up for a walk try the stroll from Bab Zweila turning left as you exit and heading up the street until you arrive at the Citadel. Or - you can go out through Bab Zweila and visit Sharia Khiameyya (Street of the Tentmakers) directly straight ahead - to shop for applique pillow cases, bedspreads, etc. Another option is to turn right after exiting Bab Zweila and walk till you arrive a Sharia Mohamed Ali and cross the street to the Islamic Museum which has a jaw dropping display of Islamic artifacts (This museum is hardly ever visited by most tourists and it is a shame because it has amazing things to behold.)

“Very Special Feeling”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Walking down those streets are amazing. It is a very crowded area, but full of tiny ethnic bazars and cobbled stoned alleys. Just walking there alongside beautiful mosques and old hundred years old houses is a true experience worth the effort. I try to remind myself that actual people lived in those same rooms as I walk from one to the other. Really enjoyable to see that marvelous part of Cairo.

“Friendliness Abounds - and Historic Sites, too!”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

You can easily lose yourself in Cairo's mosques - they have instilled in me a fascination with architecture and the vast variety exhibited on mosque domes, let alone inside, will stick with me forever. The people of Egypt have been amazingly welcoming, especially those in this district - while asking about something one of the mosque workers was eating, I was handed a sample of it (pita and hlawa - tahini and sugar); children came up to me in one of the mosques and asked me questions, desperately wanting to practice their English on a "captured" tourist, sightseeing in the enclosed space.

Take your time and walk through, seeing historic sites and exploring the restaurants and shops, as you'll find things here that are unique to the area, and not as pressed for tourists. If you're looking for something in particular, go ahead and ask: someone may very well guide you directly to a shop which sells it if theirs does not, or call and have it brought over for you to look at!
