We were so looking forward to staying in Hotel Longchamps, and found that the hotel surpassed our expectations. Let me begin with the hotel. Our good-sized room was light and airy, with a modern style of furnishing. The bathroom was much larger than average, and contained a walk-in shower as well as a bath, hand-basin and toilet. We found the dining room - with classical music - an ideal place to enjoy the high-quality breakfast. We also enjoyed sipping tea on the Winter Terrace. All the staff were professional, friendly and helpful.

We arrived quite tired after an enjoyable 10.5 hour train journey from Luxor, and were delighted to find that the hotel provided an excellent base in which to sleep very deeply. The island district of Zamalek is one of the greenest and quietest in Cairo. The streets are lined with tress, some of which lean at incredibly acute angles. The area contains a large number of embassies, but is also populated with students, which means there are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bookshops.

After venturing out each day to giza, or into the rest of the buzzing city, it was lovely to return to such a peaceful setting. We find Cairo fascinating, and look forward to returning. The larger hotels dotted on either side of the Nile look very impersonal to us, however opulent they may be, so we will definitely return to the Longchamps next time we come.

Room Tip: The back or side of the hotel is quieter, but there isn't a huge amount of traffic in Ishmael Mohammed Street.

Where should I start? The best thing about Cairo, was choosing this hotel. Excellent location, in a very nice residential area and walking distance to the Nile River. The room was nicely decorated and it was quiet. Their breakfast I thought was delicious, FREE, and had a lot of variety. Gaby at the front desk was SO HELPFUL. She gave us directions to every place, advice, even wrote things in Arabic so we could hand them to the taxi drivers. She let us borrow a travel book to take to the museum and recommended we didn't get a guide. We are so glad we listened to her... We were there for hours just using our Egypt book, which includes a guide to the Egyptian Museum. We did get a guide to the Pyramids, which was very good, our guide Heydi was very knowledgeable and took us to see some neat places around the area. Anyway, thank you Longchamps for treating us so well when we were there!

We can't say enough good things about this hotel. The decor is gorgeous, rooms are very clean and comfy, and staff are helpful and polite. They are happy to help you plan your days in Cairo and book taxis. Location is perfect for exploring Zamalek, and you can even walk to the Egyptian Museum. The computer terminal in the common area was much appreciated. Airport pick-up and drop-off went very smoothly. I only regret that we couldn't stay there on the first leg of our trip since it was fully booked - make reservations early!

Great central location on Zamalek, with good access to most of Cairo.
Everything like airpot collection, etc, went as promised.
A little bit of calm away from the Cairo chaos down below.
Good location for restaurants, etc.
Internet was very slow but I guess that is Egypt for you!

Room Tip: Stayed in the 'luxury room' which is still pretty good value for money rather than taking a more expensive hotel

My husband and I went to Cairo last year at the peak of the revolution. I believe Mubarak hasn't relinquished his post at that time. There was still curfew going on, but everything was great or even better, since the sites were not crowded at all! We got a good deal for a lot of stuff, because we were only the tourists visiting during that time.

I guess one of the best deals that we found in Cairo is Hotel Longchamps. This hotel makes you feel at home. There are smiles everywhere, and people are always willing to go the extra mile for you. Heba, Gaby, and other staff were very helpful and accommodating to our requests. The breakfast buffet is awesome, and I always look forward to it every morning. Moreover, the hotel is situated in Zamalek, where the consulates are located, so it is very safe to walk around even at night. If you want a luxury type of hotel with a view of the Nile, this is not your place. But if you want something affordable that feels like home, this is your spot.
