This island has a sense of space and charm. The polo club takes up much of the land. It is relatively uncrowded. We like to stay here!

The Zamalek , which in Egyptian means literally Island , is located between two branches of the nile canal . It' considered by many as the heart of Cairo as it is situated virtually in the middle of the city . The streets are full of fast foods , restaurants and coffee shops . It is a nice escape from all the tourist traps that sadly , cairo has to offer

This nice little neighborhood is situated about 15-30 minutes walking distance from downtown by crossing one of the three bridges that connects it to the city center. There are tea sellers on each bridge. Zamalek has a mix of trendy new restaurants and old antique and local shops.

Basically it is on Gezira Island on the Nile. The bridges connecting the island are super crowded and bustling with life. Zamalek is a place you can roam around on foot, you may be surprise what you will find while roaming the streets of Zamalek. Lots of high end hotels and residences on the island too.

Zamalek is a very beautiful island. We walked most of it, but there are horse carriages available. It is green and clean. I recommend walking across the lion bridge and along the cornice while you are there.
