I used to stay in downtown Cairo by the Nile river, but since downtown became a hot area after the revolution i started staying at the InterCon city stars which is closer to the airport...but what a pleasant surprise....it is a great hotel and now is my home in Cairo. The only cons is the lack of the view compared to hotels around the Nile. However, it is attached to a large mall, away from traffic, close to airport.
