Never been to a mosque and definitely curious to see. The citadel was destroyed by the fire and probably it might a great palace however we could only see the ruins and visited the mosque

A huge mosque sitting on top of a hill overlooking Cairo. The views are great and the history behind the mosque is interesting. Be warned though that there is a long up hill walk so if you aren't fit, best to avoid, especially in the Summer Heat.

Perched right on the top of the hill it is possible to get the most amazing view across Cairo from here and the Mosque is really interesting.

Such a beautiful structure and amazing history behind it! Crazy to think this was built in the 1800s! This site is a must when visiting Egypt.

This is an amazing place but it's much in need of renovation. Apparently international funding has been secured to restore the Citadel and the Palace which was damaged by fire some years ago. You can see the underlying beauty and it has the potential to rival the Blue Mosque. Certainly worth the visit because it is still spectacular and the location provides for a great view of the city. I can only imagine what it looked like in its heyday.

Often compared to the Blue Mosque in Istanbul which is a little better in my opinion. Well worth a visit and for the Cairo views outside from the citadel walls. Do take the time to learn the story about the French clock tower.

This is a beautiful building in a position high above the city.

Don’t forget to just check out the skyline after your look inside and if you get a chance to just sit on the wall and listen to the call to prayer as it ripples over the city. Do

When you arrive you need to remove your shoes or get some covers for them, CSI style.

Inside is cool and calm with huge chandelier and oodles of lights. The floor is covered with carpet which if I’m being honest is a little grubby and has a certain amount of bird poop on, but I guess that is going to happen with an open building.

It’s made of alabaster and is in the ottoman style and would be quite a site if it was clean and sparkling. They are at the moment just starting to do this but will be quite some time before they finish.
