This is an absolute dump! Actually my garbage can is cleaner than this place. We got there after a long flight. The sheets were stained and bloody. We asked for clean sheets and they said that they didn't have any!!! We had the same sheets for all our stay. After arriving in the middle of the night we were so chocked that the next day we really searched for a good hotel but all the good ones were booked out so we had to stay in this awful place. The bathroom and shower are so disgusting that it can not even be imagined in your worst nightmare! The staff are unfriendly and rude. The hotel car or "limo service" is an old car which is holding togehter with scotch tape and without safety belts but they will charge you as for a real limo service! And finally the beds are full of bedbugs. i got about 30 bites during our stay and they clothes that were on the bed had to be washed since they were infested with bugs. It has to also be pointed out that the breakfast they serve is disgusting and the jam was full of ants! Everything is dirty including the cups. The staff don't even know basic hygien so if you are looking for the horror experience of your life you can choose this hotel but I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy!

Even after the recent hike in room rates (a single in April 2008 had gone up to 150 LE), the Carlton represents good value for money for central Cairo. The rates include breakfast and either a simple lunch or dinner. The hotel seems to attract a mixture of local and foreign guests. One of the best things about this hotel is that I have never been hassled by any of the staff for tips or to arrange taxis or tours through them.

The hotel oozes olde world charm, especially in the lobby and restaurant. Rooms are large with polished wooden floors, good views of downtown Cairo, and some even have balconies. Bathrooms are old fashioned. The TV's have BBC. The rooms were being refurbished in April 2008 but the character did not seem to be spoilt. As well as the groundfloor restaurant, there is also a rooftop cafe / bar.

We paid a little over $40/nite. It was ok clean. We didn't really use fridge or AC. The room was noisy, but so as all Cairo. Things I don't like was the wash room, only 2 small towels, no toiletries, breakfast was a load of bread with a cup of tea or coffee. We never tried dinner, we didn't expect much from it anyway. Elevator worked ok for us. front desk wasn't bad either. We spent most time sight seeing so overall stay wasn't bad. Location is good as well.

Stayed here with my husband on April 10-13 2008. Bookede via the hotel's webpage in March, and was promised air port pick up. Wrote to the hotel five days before arrival just to reconfirm, but heard no word from them. When arriving in Cario Airport no driver was waiting for us, and while we waited we had to deal with a houndred taxi drivers who wanted our money. Took a "limousine" to the hotel, where we were told that they had no reservation for us, and only reluctantly gave us the room after being shown the reservation email.

The room was located on the 6th floor, only reachable by and old elevator. (quite a hasard in case of a fire) It was big enough, and the bathroom had a tub. It had two twin beds, a refrigiator, ac and tv. The room had really dirth floors, and the toilet had a urine stain on the seat, eww! The complimentary soap was used and old, and there were only two small towells for the two of us. At night the roaches came out in the bathroom, so you had to watch your step in the morning.

The window faced the street below wich ment a million cars honcking non stop. Didn't really rest properly during our three days there.

Tried the free dinner on the first night, but didn't even bother the other nights. We got fish, wich tasted good but was so small that it woulden't feed a cat. Rice was obviously cooked more than two days ago and was quite uneadable.

Breakfast was equally gross, dry bread (one with a nasty hair on it) and dirty plates, forks and knives. Served in slow motion by and old man.

The staff was somewhat avrage, but the man at the front desk helped us a little arranging taxis etc. Also, he helped us call our hotel in Luxor, so we could arrive a day prior to plan, since we didn't want to spend more time in Cairo.

The only really good thing about the hotel is it's location and price. Think you could find a better hotel elsewhere.

I just came back from Egypt, where I also stayed three nights at Hotel Carlton in Cairo, which was a huge disappointment.
The hotel is cheap and its location is really good - but these are the only advantages. The rooms are dingy and the bathrooms are undiscribable.
On the whole the staff was not very friendly and could not be helpful when we had questions concerning Cairo (this was also due to the fact that they hardly spoke any other language than Arabian).

My conclusion is: Hotel Carlton is unbeatable cheap, but next time I rather spend a couple of Dollars more for a clean room and friendly as well as helpful staff.

If you're not looking for a luxury but just comfortable stay, this place is really great! It's in the centre, it's got a local market just around the corner, fast (Egyptian) food and coffee shops. I love those sandwiches filled with salad, cheese and eggs just around the corner!

The rooms - for Cairo - are spacious, nicely furnished and clean! Never have seen less cockroaches in Cairo ...... They could do some refurbishing in the bathrooms.

The staff is really helpful and very friendly but never intrusing!

Excellent!!!
