“Amazing Service, Cozy, Crazy Location, So So Room”
Reviewed 11 August 2010

Service in this hotel is amazing. Mary and the rest of the crew treat you like a king and meet all your expectations and even more. The last day in this hotel they even delivered breakfast to our room without us asking, which was an amazing touch.

The location is right in the heart of downtown cairo, so it is a battlefield down there, but don't worry, the Talisman is a haven in this wild Egyptian storm of honking cars, overzealous merchants, and swarms of pedestrians.

The room was OK, something comparable to a Super 8 Motel in the US. There is some nice, original Moroccan decor in the room however, And the common rooms are even more richly decorated, the common rooms (office, lounges, etc..) are amazing in fact.

WIFI and Computer access is free, which was good and very convenient. Reception was always available 24hrs to answer any of our questions and help us navigate the wild streets of Cairo! :)

Elevator to hotel is nice and antique but when we were there it was not working properly and we had to take the stairs from time to time.

Price of the rooms was around $100 US a night, which is not expensive but ain't cheap either considering this is Cairo and the quality of the room wasn't up to par to what you'd get in the US for $100 a night.

Overall, this is a great unique hotel in a unique place in Cairo, and because of the amazing service of the hotel staff, we wouldn't mind staying here again.

Our family arrived by night train from Luxor (Much to be recomended btw!). We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel but in the end we made our way down a small alley, into a courtyard and up an old metal elevator. Not the place you you wander into looking for a hotel! But, at the top of the elevator, we discovered this urban oasis. A quiet little hotel, very charming on the rooftops of Cairo. Service was fine, breakfast ok and the rooms charming. Would stay there again, but if you require more luxuary, more facilities or prefer modern hotels, this might not be for you.
However, if you enjoy the 1001 night experience and dont mind a little rough edges this is just the place for you. A magical little oasis in the centre of Cairo.

The Talisman Hotel was in a fantastic downtown spot but taxis do have a really hard time finding it. It’s very boutique, it was the only hotel that I saw that didn’t have a guy standing with a gun and a metal detector at the door.

Another nice thing was from the rooms you could barely hear traffic from down below due to double doors on the patio. The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms were very up to date and clean. Breakfast was nice, the classic pastries, bread and a bit of fruit. They do have free in house WI FI and computer access. Overall one of the nicer hotels we had been to while in Cairo.

This botique hotel is a rare and wonderful find in Cairo - accomodations and service on par with international hotel chains, but with an intimate and local vibe. The location is perfect - right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of downtown, though you would never know it once you get inside the quiet oasis of the hotel. The rooms are adorable, the breakfast carried and filling, and the staff incredibly helpful and friendly.

We chose to book a car and guide through the tour company based in the hotel (Adventures in Egypt) to take us around to the surrounding sites (Giza, Sakkara, Memphis). We were very pleased with the service -the guide was knowledgable and professional, and they were willing to modify the tour slightly in order to accomodate our preferences.

This hotel was adequate for our purposes in Cairo. It was neat and clean. However for the price we paid it was very poor value. We paid less for the Old Winter Palace in Luxor/LTI in Aswan (both wonderful hotels - see my reviews) and the front desk and the tour agency head werent very helpful esp when we didnt want to take his tours. I wouldnt stay here again only on grounds that it wasnt value for money.

This hotel is much more personal than any of the big western chains in town. Of course, it is also much simpler, but the rooms are comfortable enough, each is decorated with taste and you have a lounge and a library that the guests can use. Free wifi is provided. Breakfast could definitely be improved though.

My best friend and I stayed at the Talisman for two nights in April and enjoyed everything about the experience. We had extensively researched hotels here on TripAdvisor before booking, and are very glad we did. As everyone mentions, the hotel is indeed a bit hard to find, and we had to have the taxi go around the block twice before we spotted the Adidas store next to the hotel entrance. I'm glad I had looked at pictures ahead of time so I knew what to keep an eye out for! The wrought-iron elevator is wonderfully charming, and you would never know that such a lovely boutique hotel is tucked away on the fifth floor of such an otherwise-innocuous building.

We had a beautifully appointed room with twin beds, and plenty of space, with the huge closet and numerous shelves. The room was very clean, we had plenty of hot water, and there was a mini fridge with bottled water for a fee, which we took full advantage of for all our sightseeing. The public areas of the hotel are gorgeously decorated: inlaid chairs and tables, colored glass chandeliers, bright colors everywhere, tapestries and art on the walls...a world away from any of the tourist hotels.

I was able to get free wi-fi on my phone, and my friend was able to get it on her laptop, in addition to the computer in the library for anyone to use. Breakfast was not extensive, but was quite adequate for me (and the Egyptian yogurt is delicious!). The fresh-squeezed orange juice was to die for. We didn't have any noise problems in our room, as we appeared to be overlooking a side street and not Talat Harb.

We used the in-house travel company, Adventures in Egypt, to arrange our visit to Giza, Saqqara, and Memphis, and we could not have been more pleased with Hamdi, who was extraordinarily helpful and easy to deal with, and the experience in general. We had a fantastic female guide, and a car and driver, for the half-day itinerary. We were continuing on to Aswan and Luxor, and ended up using Adventures in Egypt to arrange airport pickup and drop off, guides and drivers for Aswan and Luxor, and transportation from Aswan to Luxor with stops at Kom Ombo and Edfu. Hamdi checked in with us to make sure things were going smoothly the whole time. It made things much easier for us, and everything went wonderfully.

In short, we couldn't have been happier with the Talisman. Just a note: the hotel is right on one of the busiest streets in Cairo, and is not in a particularly tourist-y area. As two female Americans, we stood out prominently in the area, particularly since we insisted on walking quite a bit (otherwise, how do you get a sense of the city?), even though we dressed modestly and did little to attract attention to ourselves. Just be prepared for a lot of attention, and not all of it welcome, as a foreign female. It was always wonderful to get back to the hotel at the end of a long day! We definitely recommend the Talisman to anyone who wants to avoid the tourist scene, and instead experience a charming, beautiful oasis in downtown Cairo.
