“Wonderful Interior in a bustling side street”
Reviewed 14 December 2010

As many people have stated on Trip Advisor. You can easily miss this hotel as it is located down a side street inside an old building. But what charm you'd be missing. The entrance hall has small businesses located inside a marbled floored entrance. There are genuine 1920 or 1930s lifts. The kind where you pull open the gate before entering a wooden lift and a welcoming smile from the hotel staff.

The staff all speak excellent English if you are having trouble with Arabic and can offer advice on local restaurants and cafe's for food and drinks. The rooms are well decorated and comfortable with a very Islamic feel. There is a wonderful breakfast room and lounge. There is also a library and internet terminal. The rooms are surprisingly quiet considering how noisy the main street is.

If you love getting away from the chain hotels then this is definitely worth a night or two in down-town Cairo. Within walking distance of the museum and American University it is also handy for Islamic Cairo and the souks. All within walking distance if you are prepared to get out there.

If it's traditional Egyptian hospitality you are after then this must be one place to go. Open the balcony doors and you can almost feel Egypt. Great location in downtown Cairo, within walking distance to the Egyptian Museum and many shops, quiet rooms as 5 floors up, very pleasant staff and great Egyptian style decor.

This establishment is entirely deserving of its "de charme" tagline. My husband and I had arranged for an airport to hotel transfer via the hotel hence we had no difficulty finding it - thanks to our attentive driver who happily lugged our suitcases all the way to the elevator. The elevator is an experience in itself with its dimly, chandelier-lit, mirrored and panelled interior, and wrought iron gates. By contrast, the hotel interior is bright, fun and alluring with peruvian yellow walls, egyptian lamps, woven rugs, masharabiya panelling and dark, ornate furniture. From our arrival on October, 3rd until our departure on October, 7th, the staff were friendly and extremely courteous and attentive. No request was too extreme. Having read previous negative reviews on the breakfasts we were pleasantly surprised by daily fresh fruit, delicious yoghurt of various flavours, cakes and pastries served with butter and a choice of jams and cheeses. Beverages included freshly squeezed fruit juice and a choice of teas or instant coffee. Filter coffee is available on request at an extra cost. There is no outside area to speak of (there are various comfortable sitting rooms) but after a whirlwind day of bustling around the streets of Cairo and taking in the major sights who needs it? We'd arrive in our air-conditioned room tired and bedraggled, have an afternoon nap, shower and dress and be off to dinner. We specifically requested a quiet room which was situated at the end of a passage, far away from the Talaat Harb (busy road) side. If you want the glitz of an international hotel experience then by all means go and stay at one of the vegas-like high rises dotted all over Cairo. We tried a few of these for lunch or afternoon tea and generally found that the staff couldn't have been more lack-lustre and disinterested. Hamdi El-Shora the owner/manager of Adventure in Egypt is situated at the reception area of the hotel and he was fabulous in arranging last minute requests to nearby Saqqara and Giza but can also arrange excursions throughout Egypt. We highly recommend The Talisman Hotel de Charme. What a wonderful experience by any standards.

The Talisman is a truly charming hotel, from the wonderful 30s lift to the beautiful wall hangings. The public areas consisted of a very good library, two large loungerooms comfortably furnished and a very nice breakfast room. We found breakfast to be quite sufficient with eggs, pastries, fruit and cereals. We stayed in one of the suites which was at the back of the hotel and therefore very quiet. The walls were a wonderful terracotta colour and had a "ragged" finish, the huge wall hangings were simply superb works of art and it was beautifully furnished with a huge daybed, chairs and a desk all in dark timber. The airconditioning in each room of our suite worked well. Mary was on reception, welcomed us very warmly and arranged for us to have a refreshing tray of drinks with a fruit platter on arrival. We found all the staff extremely helpful and Hamdi El-Shora organised our tours through his Adventures In Egypt company. Hamdi's company is located in reception and so was extremely handy. We had Shaimaa as our guide for our tours and she was very personable, knowledgeable and took us to rather different mosques away from the crowds. On our return trip for one night we were greeted as family. My husband was suffering a head cold and Hamdi very kindly took us to the local apothecary. He also organised a few hot lemon and honey drinks - totally uncalled for but so so welcome. We arranged tours in Luxor through Hamdi and although our guide wasn't as personable as Shaimaa, he certainly took us to some very interesting sites and again, away from the bus hoards. Just the two of us sailing on a felucca was a highlight and very welcome in the late afternoon.

Having just returned from two weeks in Egypt I can safely say that the Talisman is a real gem. Having read a couple of less positive reviews in terms of location/entrance access I was surprised to find the entrance not only accessible but you get to the hotel via a gorgeous Art-deco style lift which I loved. Once inside the hotel, rooms (we experienced two having decided to book an extra night while we were there) were tastefully decorated in a lovely Arabic theme, the perfect induction to Cairo.

The hotel is located in the heart of Downtown on Taalat Harb Street. This is one of the busiest and liveliest streets in Cairo so it is noisy and if you're after spotless streets then you're in the wrong city but it is perfect for getting in to the heart of the action. We walked regularly to see other parts of the city such Al Khalili and the Egyptian Museum so in terms of location, you can't get much better.

The staff were very helpful, advising us only to take the white meter taxis (which saved our lives and money!), booked restaurants for us and even wrote directions for taxi drivers in Arabic. We arranged a transfer via the hotel when we arrived and while this was at a UK rather than Egyptian price, it was nice to know we were being picked up in a private aircon van at 2am in the morning.

Breakfast could be a little more substantial but if you're going to Egypt for food then you're likely to be disappointed as its pretty lacking in most places, even those recommended in lonely planet (apart from the odd gem)

All in all, a fantastic and unique place to stay, certainly a happy alternative from the big tourist destinations or the backpacker crowd.

My adult daughter and I traveled to Ciaro to meet our older daughter not knowing what to expect. At first sight, the choice of the Talisman appeared to be a mistake. It is located in the heart of the city, down a crowed alley way. But quickly we realized we made the right choice. The hotel is charming, understatedly classy and the staff was overwhelmingly helpful. We quickly got used to the hussle and bussle of downtown Cairo and realised we made the right choice. This boutique hotel is relaxing and alluring from the colorful decor to the modern amenities. The location was convenient and exciting. Hamdi, the owner of the tour company Adventures in Egypt based in the Hotel, was knowledgable, helpful, affordable and always available.
The Talisman was a true gem. I will definitely stay there again.
