Owner description: Next to the Great Pyramid of Khufu, this is the second-largest of the Giza pyramids; Khafre was the son of Khufu.

Just as spectacular as the Giza pyramid and the top of the pyramid still has the limestone (I think) covering that the pyramids were finished off with. The lower levels have the limestone chipped away and hence we can see the stones inside. Originally, the entire pyramid was covered by the limestone and the inner blocks are not visible.

We chose to go inside this pyramid to save money (Giza pyramid costs 2.5X) and it was nothing special - Don't expect it to be like the Valley of kings. The tunnel is small and the walls are bare. the burial chamber is also bare but a welcome relief since it's cooler than the tunnel. Nothing amazing from inside but you can go in to see what it's like - it's not too expensive.

We were so impressed with the pyramids in general, but the extra cost of entering this one was not worth it. You walk, crouched over, through a passageway which terminates in the burial chamber to find nothing but an empty sarcophagus - no carvings, hieroglyphics, etc.

This was the 1st pyramid I ever went inside, back in 1978. Went back this last trip to refresh my memory. Brighter inside than Khufu's Great Pyramid, due to the paler limestone. Surprised by how small the sarcophagus was, narrow and not very deep. Big enough for a mummy, but a single coffin, at most. Right beside this pyramid is a quarry where some of the stone to build it came from - you can still see the ditches in the ground from cutting blocks. Look on the wall for an inscription by Prince Khaemwaset, son of Ramesses II.

Should have done. Might have taken a bit longer. Please visit the inside of all pyramids if you have time
