“High tea was very disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2013

I didn't stay at this hotel but when I was in Aswan in February I wanted to do something special for my birthday. I decided to have high tea on the terrace at the Old Cataract Hotel and watch the sunset. I ordered darjeeling tea which was very weak. The food was terrible. The bottom tier (and the largest plate) was sliced fruit. Never heard of fruit for a high tea! The middle tier had some small cakes/slices which was served with jam and cream but no scones in sight. The top tier was sandwiches and the bread was completely dried out and also some savoury puffs with different toppings. The bill came to 308 egp (approx. $44). My Egyptian guide was horrified at the price but went and complained that there were no scones. Other than the food the setting was wonderful especially watching the sunset. I also was taken into the restaurant and it was breathtaking with the huge coffee pots and aqua glass lamps.

“Just called in for Tea”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2013

We were taken to this magnificent hotel for afternoon tea on the terrace 14 years ago whilst at Aswan during a Nile cruise. We were very impressed then with the ambience, service and décor, we also managed a discreet peek at Agatha Christies / Churchill`s rooms and I believe the Royal suite nearby.
Visiting Aswan again a couple of weeks ago, it was our turn to introduce some friends to the Cataract and tea on the terrace. The welcome at the gate and the foyer so professional and discreet, as if we were valued Royal guests instead of day trippers off a boat. We were pleased to see that standards have been maintained, if not improved, they are as outstanding now as they were then. It just reeks of old world charm and professional service, with amazing chandeliers, dozens of giant amaryllis as a floral display in the lobby, fireplaces straight out of stately homes, sumptuous leather furniture and an antique elevator with an operator wearing a fez
The Churchill suite has been fully modernised but still retains its opulent luxury and the veranda where he used to sit and paint one of the best views in the world.
Being served tea on the terrace looking at that view was one of the highlights of our and our friend’s holiday, thank you.

“This is the place to eat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2013

if you have deep pockets. Charming and attentive staff - we decided to eat out on the terrace on a rather chilly evening but were provided with pashminas etc. The quality of the good is excellent. It does, however, come at a price - around £60 for two courses for the two of us - but it's worth it

“Best Nile View in Egypt”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2013

This restaurant is located on the terrace of the Sofitel Old Cataract Hotel. Perfect for lunch or afternoon drink/tea. The view of the Nile won't ever get better than this!
