Bet El Kerem is simply the coolest place I've ever stayed at. I had originally booked it for 2 nights, but we ended up staying for 6 nights because we didn't want to leave. It's not so much about the rooms, which are simple yet comfortable and clean. It's about enjoying the hospitality, the delicious breakfasts with fresh juices, the amazing dinners that they spend all day preparing, and the great activities that they will arrange for you. I especially loved going out on their motorboat during the day with Captain Ali, who took us to great swimming beaches on the Nile. The staff, the food, the roof terrace, and the location are all unbeatable and make this such a wonderful and special place to really relax and enjoy the beauty of Nubia!

First of all - outstanding service. You will feel right at home. And the food! Eat all your meals there. Much of the food in Aswan is terrible, but the guys at the hotel can really cook, and its fantastic.

The rooms are clean and comfortable but spartan. We had a very nice air conditioner (which wasn't really needed while we were there, but worked great for the one night we used it), and our own sink in the room. We also had a de facto private bathroom even though we paid for a share because the house was below full capacity (I think maybe two of the three or so other rooms were booked). The walls are pretty thin, though, so don't expect a ton of privacy if someone is in the room next door.

The location is a bit out of the way - it's located in a Nubian village on the West side of the Nile. But really, it was nice to be out of the touristy bustle on the East Bank. And the East Bank was accessible by ferry - 1 EGP, about twenty minutes total to walk there and get across to the other side.

This was a great find for us.

We sought the village community and found it here. This bed and breakfast was simple yet a gem in Egypt. We took a water taxi from the east side of the Nile to get to it (1 pound per person, 10 min ride). FYI.. water taxi is separated for men and women so make sure you sit on the correct side. 5 min walk from docking. We stayed in the double bed room with en suite shower (shared toilet). Only one other couple there while we were there. Their meals and service are GREAT! Be patient though, it is a bed and breakfast. Walking in the village was also a good idea as was hiring a local for camel rides. We stayed a perfect three nights. No internet.

Here is the jewel of the Nile. Bet el Kerem is situated in the Nubian village on the west bank of Nile across from Aswan. I simply loved it there. Not many tourist/guest venture to the west bank but stay in the more upscale hotels in Answan or on Elephantine Island or worst of all on a cruise boat totally removed from the local culture. I found my stay at Be el Kerem to be peaceful and restful. The staff is amazingly kind and attentive. I did not want to leave the place and I long to return. If you ever venture to Aswan stay at Bet el Kerem. Don't be lured away by the costly hotels and cruise boats. Getting there is a bit of challenge but doable. From the train station walk directly to the Nile and look down where you will find the ferry to take you to the other side (5.00 Egyptian Pounds). It is a medium size boat with an outboard motor with separate areas for men and women. I guarantee that you will be the only tourist on this boat! Enjoy.

After traveling from Cario, Bet el Kerem and it's staff, location was a great respite! It is across the Nile on the West Bank in a small nubian village. The Nubian people who staff it were extremely hospitable. We were the only ones at the B & B so we got the royal treatment. We also got to just sit down and talk to the staff and learn who they are. This to me was the highlight or our stay just visiting with the local people! No money can buy such an experience. Our short stay with the Nubians was the highlight of our two week trip!

I will add that we only went down to Aswan to see Abul Simbel. If we had known more about Bet el Kerem we would have stayed longer just for the sake of enjoying the atmosphere and beach. We didn't get to swim because of our time constraint but would have loved to.

If you go the local ferry is directly across the train station! There is a plaza inbetween the train station and the ferry station so don't get thrown off. When you cross the main street by the Nile you will see a sign saying Alexander Ferry or something to that wording, the local ferry entrance is to the left of that sign. There is no sign that says local ferry! You walk down and just wait with the locals. It cost us only 5LE!

If you ask people for the local ferry be warned. The Egyptians won't believe you want to stay with the Nubians on the other side of the Nile so they will say there is no such ferry. Don't be fooled! They will try and get you to hire a taxi for 200LE to take you to the other side or hire your own private ferry for the same amount. Don't listen to them!

Once you arrive on the other side of the Nile, don't get a taxi like we did! The B& B is literally a 5minute walk from the ferry station! You walk up from the platform to the dirt road and you will literally see the sign "Bet el Kerem"!

Lastly, this is a no frills, clean and hospitable B & B. It appeals to your back packers and adventurous travelers who like to "take the road less traveled."

I hope this helps.

We had a very nice stay in Bet El Kerem. It's a nice pension with 8 rooms. It's situated at the westbank of the Nile, beside the tombs of the nobles and the Nubian village. The city of Aswan is at the other side of the Nile, but easy to reach with the local ferry. We very much enjoyed the quiet place, the beautiful view, the food, the very clean rooms and the nice people and great service. It's lovely to sit at the roof terrace. It felt good. Because it's the only place to stay on this side of the Nile it is very easy to have contact with the nubian people, who are very friendly. It's easy to visit interesting places in the neighbourhood, you can do this on yourself or with help from the staff. We enjoyed our stay very much and hope to come back sometime.
