“Best seafood in Aswan”
Reviewed 26 December 2010

We had dinner at Chef Khalil in both nights we were in Aswan. The mezze and bread is very good. You look and pick your fish and they cook it. The fried fish with rice ("sayyaddia") was awesome. The grilled fish was a little burnt and not that good. The service was friendly and the decor was local and nice.

“Ok, not great”
Reviewed 18 December 2010

The fish soup tasts great and looks amazing - there is a whole crab floating in it. The Monk fish was also good a little burnt but it didn't matter. However my girlfriend got food poisining the next day so not sure I can recomend the place.

The atmosphere was a little frosty but service was quick and it is inexpensive

“Wow, and we get the name wrong because....”
Reviewed 9 December 2010

so do they! It is CHIEF, but written both ways at the restaurant itself, and pronounced CHEF...honest!
Absolutely fantastic fresh fish and seafood, cooked superbly, and you can select what you would like first from the display cold case if you want...wonderful. service was great too, but it is a quick in and out in the evenings when the restaurant is packed with locals, and they need the tables! For a more relaxed meal try lunch times- the food is just as good. Set price "plates" from the menu come with super fresh flat bread, rice and salads. We ate tahini, roast aubegene and spicy fresh salad with coriander and lemons. Enormous sea bass, a mixed palte of giant shrimps ( prawns to we Brits) snapper, nile perch and squid, beutifully grilled with garlic, onion, lemon and herbs. We looked enviously at seafood soup, squid casseroles and red sea crab dishes- but were too full to order second rounds! A must, I think the best restaurant in Aswan!

“Excellent seafood -- but why does everyone get the name wrong?”
Reviewed 22 October 2010

First of all, the least we can do is get its name right -- it's CHIEF Khalil. Yes, I know "Chef" makes more sense, but that's not the restaurant's name! "Chief" is on the front signage (see attached photo), menus, and everything else that lists the restaurant's name -- and just to be sure, I confirmed it with our waiter. So ask for the Chief, not the Chef.

And ask for it you definitely should, if you have any sort of affection for seafood -- this is some of the best I've had in any country around the world. You wouldn't suspect it from the whimsical, almost surreal interior, with its bizarre decor and incense burning everywhere -- but the seafood soup, shrimp, and grilled whole fish were absolutely delicious, and very reasonably priced -- we paid about 100 EGP each, including (non-alcoholic) drinks and tip, for more food than anybody could eat.

Know that they serve no alcohol (not even beer), and you can't bring your own. But have a drink when you get back to your hotel; if you want a truly Egyptian dining experience in a truly Egyptian town, this is your place. It's at the edge of the Souk, near the train station -- any cabbie or carriage driver will know where it is.

“Friendly service, fresh seafood.”
Reviewed 29 December 2009

Out family had a wonderful experience at Chef Khalil 10 days ago. We ordered the set meals: fish, and enjoyed the bread, rice, and salads tremendously. The food is clean and none of us had any stomach problems afterwards.
