“If you want a change of taste, this is the place for it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2011

Having in the past week eaten in both the 1886 restaurant (Winter Palace) & the 1902 restaurant (Old Cataract), we were in the mood for something different.

Off we went to find one of the International-style restaurants that abound around the St Joseph hotel. Sadly, I told the caleche driver to turn down the wrong road and because I'd tried to throttle him when he made the same mistake the previous evening, I could hardly go back now, could I?

So we went past the Taste of India, backtracked, looked inside and tentatively entered.

The Egyptians are not very good at foreign cuisine in my experience: not Japanese, not Chinese & certainly not French. The only Indian food we'd tried in Egypt was at the Moghul room (Mena House, Cairo) which is brilliant and the Sheraton, Luxor; well, best to gloss over that experience.

So with some trepidation, we ordered. And got some great starters- onion bhaji and deep-fried king prawns in a spicy batter.

Four king prawns for 26 LE - compare that to the three tempura king prawns at the Japanese restaurant in the St George Sonesta which will set you back, from memory, around 120 LE.

The prawns were good, the bhajis fresh & crispy & served with chutneys and tomato salad.

Then my favourite: chicken tikka Jalfrezi. It tasted right from the first mouthful - and it was hot the way it should be. The chicken was beautifully tender and the portion was a good size.

I asked my wife what her chicken dansakh was like: how did it compare to our favourite restaurant in London?

"Do you know",she said, " I think this one's even better" Wow, high praise indeed!

Anyway to cut a long story short, we had the following: onion bhaji, deep-fried king prawns, chicken tikka jalfrezi, chicken dansakh, tarka dhal, aloo ghobi, raita, peshwari nan, chapti, a bottle of water & a bottle of Gianaclis rosé wine.

Yes, that's a lot, but it was good so we polished-off most of it. And the bill? 340LE

So, if the Egyptians can't really do foreign food, how come it was so good? Possibly because the owner's English & knows his curry and the chef is authentic...Chinese!

PS we went back for lunch 2 days later- just before flying home.

“Still one of our favorites...”

A great Indian restaurant that shares it's management with the 'Fortune Cookie' further along the street.

We've eaten here on numerous occasions over the years and it's always been superb - the service is great, really friendly and the Chef will cook your meal just the way you like it.

The best bit is the price - starters, main course and drinks all for less than £20 for two - fantastic value!

Ras2, great job and thanks once more for looking after us!

See you again soon...

“Onion bahjees to die for.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2011

We visit Luxor twice a year and always visit this restaurant. We always have an brilliant meal. The staff know us quite well now and are very welcoming and efficient. Food is excellent and the naan bread and onion bahjees are mouth watering. Would recommend this restaurant, which is located in St Joseph street, to anyone who enjoys a good indian meal.
