The Mandarin used to be in the Hilton Hotel before it all closed down for refurbishment and when it moved to the Iberotel it was still serving excellent food. We tried it out again in October 2007 and were a bit disappointed (only about 5 prawns in one of the main dishes!) but the food was still quite tasty and the restaurant was busy.
However, on trying out The Mandarin in May 2009, the restaurant wasn't busy - in fact we were the only four diners when we were in!! Yes, I know that should have told us something, but by that time we had sat down, and as we had just arrived in Luxor, we were tired and just wanted something to eat. We ordered chicken and sweetcorn soup and had to try and find the chicken! We had four main courses with rice and they were bland and boring. All the dishes looked exactly the same, although each had a different sauce, however the only one you could say for certain WAS different was the lemon chicken! Along with one beer and three soft drinks the whole bill came to the equivalent of approximately £9.50 each. I would say that the service was good, but being the only four diners, that wasn't difficult!!
All in all, this restaurant has gone downhill and I would not recommend it to anyone. We had better cooked and tastier Oriental dishes in other restaurants in town – the chefs in these restaurants could sure teach the Mandarin a thing or two!!
