“Nice hotel to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2011

Good location, quiet, clean, good price, and very helpful staff.

Room Tip: If you need an ATM machine, just across the street is the Hilton Hotel.

We came to the hotel after very long day and the weather was so hot!!! But when we entered the hotel, everything was fine. They invited us with welcome drinks and wet towels!!! One minute after our coming! The hotel is really beautiful and clean, they have very cheap and tasty food, people here are so kind and the swimming pool is fantastic. And other thing - it is very close to the Karnak Temple. I honestly recommend this hotel.

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2010

Horrendous is too mild a word to describe this hovel. We actually refused to stay overnight it was so bad. We didn't book it ourselves - it was through a travel tour agency in Hurghada called 'Royal Dream Tours' - more like Royal Nightmare Tours. I will give more info about them in another review which is of the Marriott Beach Resort in Hurghada (which is where we stayed for two weeks). This hotel stay was supposed to be part of a 2 day tour to Luxor. When booking with the tour company we had asked for more info on the Karnak and photos and he couldn't provide us with either. So we looked it up here - there were no reviews but the pics didn't look too bad so we though that for one night it would do the job.
It is a 3 star hotel. 3 star in Egypt is effectively no star. Please don't waste your money on anything less than 5 star because you will sorely regret it. 5 star in Egypt is equivalant to our 3 star. Anyway, we arrived in the Karnak and were struck by the dark, grim and dirty reception area. It was like an abandoned hotel with decor that was like a throwback from the 70's. It was absolutely rank. We were led to a crotchety old lift that could take only a max of 3 people so it really was a squeeze and it could barely lift us. The corridor that led to the rooms was white washed, dirty and unwelcoming. The room was dark, musty and had aircon that blew only hot air. The real clincher was the bed. There were crumbs on the covers and when I pulled the bedclothes back there were black hairs everywhere which made me want to retch. We went straight downstairs and told the tour guide who was still there that we wanted to be moved immediately. (He had told us initially that if we weren't happy he would move us -all of a sudden this was a problem. He tried to persuade us to stay in the hotel (it was his Uncle's he said). We had to bring the manager upstairs to show him the hairs on the bed. He actually had the balls to ask us 'if we were sure we hadn't slept in it yet?' - WE HAD ONLY JUST ARRIVED!!! So he ushers us into the room next door which is just as rank and has two single beds - for a married couple? No way. So we refused and went back downstairs to our tour guide who insisted on bringing us through to the 'restaurant' for 'welcome drinks' and another barage of persuasion talk. We sat down and the tablecloth was covered in filth and stains. Flies were everywhere - it was disgusting. The kitchen door was like a battered old bit of wood from a ghost ship. When the welcome drinks arrived, my husband didn't touch his but I managed a sip, trying not to be ungrateful. It was some sort of peach cordial. Yuck. I was terrified I'd catch something.
So we had a heart to heart with the tour guide - told him that we weren't trying to upset anyone but that there was no way we would stay. He was making it difficult for us so we said he could keep the money (more fool us) for the room but that we would be booking elsewhere. He laughed at us and said 'how are you going to book somewhere else?' We said that we could look after ourselves quite easily that we would find an internet cafe and book ourselves. It was unbelieveable the way he wouldn't just let us go - he ushered is into a small dirty office nearby and said that we could use the web there. The thing is, the hotel manager, the tour guide and two other hotel staff members gathered in the tiny office with us to watch everything we were doing. It was almost impossible to get away from them. We found a 5 star hotel nearby called the Sonesta St. George (luxor) and wanted to book it (through ebookers) but we didn't want to put our credit card details through on that computer. Again, the tour guide kept getting involved and insisting that the price we saw on ebookers must be incorrect or an old pice because it was so good and were we sure we didn't want to stay in the Karnak? We laughed him off - of course ebookers was correct, we'd used it many times before. So he insisted on calling the Sonesta St.George himself and checking the price. He spoke to someone for ages on the phone (in Arabic) and then told us a higher price and that we would have to take breakfast (additional price). (Even though ebookers had the price without breakfast and was cheaper). We'd had such a long day from travelling and wanted to get to another hotel quick so we just said yes. Again the tour guide insisted on bringing us over in a taxi and 'organising' our room at the Sonesta reception. We ended up with a room that had two single beds in it which we didn't realise until the tour guide had gone. We were two exhausted to argue and were just happy to be out of the Karnak dump. We realise now that the tour guide had most likely booked us a cheaper room than we'd given him money for and pocketed the rest. The morals of the story are DONT STAY IN THE KARNAK, DON'T BOOK WITH ROYAL DREAM TOURS and please be aware that when you go to Egypt you will be ripped off left, right and centre. The Egyptians are very intimidating. As much as possible, organise your own hotels and bargain down EVERY price.
PS We should;ve taken photos of the Karnak ourselves but we just wanted out asap!!
