“Great Small Family Hotel”
Reviewed 21 June 2011

This is the second time this year my husband and I have spent a week at El Mesela. The view of the Nile from our room is outstanding. Hotel is spotless. Bed linen and towels changed every day. Two really good chefs (no upset tummies here) and the owners and all staff so freindly and helpful. I forgot my travel kettle for my early morning cuppa and they lent me one.Location right at side of Nile. Motor boats, feluccas and ferry on your doorstep and also taxis but as this is West Bank Luxor there is no hassle like on East Bank. We have been visiting Luxor for last six years and this is the best hotel we have stayed in. Highly recomended.

Room Tip: Front rooms have best view. Not noisy.

Stayed in Luxor from Nov 2010 - Feb 2011. Mohammed the owner and all his staff made me feel very welcome and couldn't do enough for me. My room had ensuite, fridge, tv and one of the most comfortable beds I have every slept in. Saw several of the rooms and they are all beautifully furnished. Even if you dont stay here it is one of the best places to eat on the west bank, excellent menu and very reasonable. The New Year Party was a great night and the buffet was excellent. There are also English film nights occasionally and also buffet nights. Mohammed and his staff really made me feel at home and one of the family. I return to Luxor next week and looking forward to going back. It feels like going home and I can't wait to see them all again. Have been travelling to Egypt for the last 20 years. The people are very friendly and helpful, especially at El Mesala. I have never felt afraid or intimidated at any time and would highly recommend this hotel as the place to stay. You will be made more than welcome there.

The key phrase to describe our impressions of our stay at El Mesala was -- the personal touch. Mohammed the owner had us met at the airport after midnight, greeted us at the hotel, offered us a drink and then up to a nice, very comfortable room with en suite bathroom and a splendid view over the Nile. Mohammed only has ten rooms and he's determined to make a name for El Mesala by being attentive to his guests. It works. He made us happy. The hotel is very pleasant, with a charming patio at the front bedecked with colourful hangings. Breakfast there put us in a positive mood, and we felt right away we were in the real Egypt -- as opposed to the big $300 per night international hotels on the other side of the river. Mohammed showed his worth on New Year's Eve -- for 100 Egyptian pounds each (£20 sterling) we had a party with dinner, two troupes of male dancers, a whirling dervish and a belly dancer "from Cairo". A great time was had by all. Next day, up early and Mohammed had us driven 90 minutes up river to Edfu where we embarked on a cruise boat he had reserved for us. The African Queen had six crew, four cabins and only us as guests on board. For three days we sailed up to Aswan, enjoying good food, excellent service, stops for visits on shore and camp fires on the beaches in the evenings. It was enchanting. At Aswan Mohammed had a car waiting to take us back to Luxor, where he let us use one of the hotel rooms until we left at 10 pm for the airport and our flight home. This was travel as it is meant to be -- comfortable, colourful, small scale, with close contact with local people and lots of Egyptian humour and warmth. Thank you, Mohammed.

We were looking for the "typical" Egyptian B+B style hotel and we were delighted with our find. Mohammed, Ahmed and all their staff made sure we were comfortable and felt at home. We had the most spectacular view over the Nile and the restaurant was very charming with a really relaxed feel to it and extremely good food (try the mixed grill - delicious!). We walked around the back streets of the West Bank and we have to say that we were very pleased we chose El Mesala and would definitely go back again. It is modest but charming home comfort and great value for money.

A new, very friendly hotel overlooking the beautiful Nile on the West Bank within walking distance of the ferry and several motorboats and feluchas.Delicious meals prepared by excellent cooks. The rooms are kept clean with fresh towels daily.Very comfortable indeed.
Perfect for relaxing or just sitting on the balcony admiring the sun and local views or chatting with the charming staff and local people. Many small shops around the hotel sell everything that you might need + some welcoming coffee shops with large tv screens where you can watch movies with the local folks and absorb the culture.
Special thanks to Mohamed the owner for making me so very welcome.Cordial thanks also to Ahmed the manager who arranged trips for me at competitive prices. Thanks also to the hard working staff including Carrim for cleaning my room so well.A special mention to my new friends Leslie and little Islam. They all made my holiday very special.Thank you.

An Oasis in a hassling city! The owners appreciated feedback and I Let him know in the morning about fixing the paint splattered tiles (ubiquitous in Egypt!), dodgy light, slightly blocked sink and TV not working, little things in the end in an otherwise comfortable, almost luxury, at a very good price Euro30 for three, in big beds,. They opened the new building adjacent in July 2010 and hope to have a bridge between the two buildings to accommodate parties and belly dancing (not my scene but good luck to them). They set to fix the problems that afternoon! We were guided there by a patient taxi driver who we did not trust at first (as usual) but who turned out to be a good man (and not a maniac on the road too!). Breakfast (good continental with 'American Tea' - teabag in cup with hot water - I explained the difference) on the roof overlooking the Nile and camels was a highlight, sunset would have been great too but we missed that (saw it another evening and swarms of birds flying downstream, spectacular!). We ate well in the restaurant, meat was the best we had in Egypt, although my Beef Curry and Bombay Potatoes was a bit like school curry! The owners are hard on their waiters and charged him for the meatballs that never arrived (despite his having written the order down) and the carrot salad never turned up too but we were so full both would have been too much!! We reimbursed the waiter and gave him a tip! They do try hard. Whilst other hotels (in the guides) were fully booked on Xmas Day night (we arrived at 21.15hrs after trying full hotels with a French family of four stuffed in a seven-seater Peugeot - that was the patient taxi driver - Mohammed - +20(0)1243 71132) they had empty rooms as they are not listed. We were MOST grateful that they did not rip us off and the room was the best of all our holiday. They restored our faith in humanity actually! The constant low background hum of the big Nile cruisers should be gone when the docks are moved upstream soon. They also produce a really useful leaflet - in real English - for tourists which we could have done with earlier! The website says it all with pictures. They say wi-fi in every room but we did not get it in 202, but they will soon. From the hotel you can walk into the countryside within a few minutes upstream along the Nile, great place to unwind and watch the bird-life at the backwater. The ferry is 200m away downstream, very convenient for popping over to the busy, noisy, hassle of the main town, although we did not bother as the peace just kept you there in the hotel! I gave them tips on how to get a star rating and they were very amenable to any advice. BTW El Mesala is Obelisk in Arabic. When it gets more popular then it may be more difficult to be accommodated at very short notice at peak times!!

This little hotel is a delight situated as it is with the most fab views of the river and the floodlit luxor temple. We had never heard of the Mesala hotel, but we were recomended it by the owners of a nearby vacation rental, Villa Bahri, and boy, we were so glad we had taken their advice.
The owners are friendly and the room was clean and comfy. The star attraction though is the restaurant where we had the most delicious meals at the most reasonable prices. Their chef has worked all over and it shows in the quality and presentation of the food.We just loved the fact that we could dine looking over the river, eating super food, for less than the cost of a couple of drinks at the huge hotels over the river on the east bank.
Thanks to you all for a great few days, and special thanks to Villa Babri for their advice and guidance. I hope to be back and would recomended the west bank of luxor to everyone.
