My family and I have just returned from a week at the Winter Palace - we had booked for the Pavilion but were upgraded to the Old Winter Palace on arrival! We had visited for a cocktail party in October and were looking forward to staying there - we were definitely not disappointed! The atmosphere is wonderful, reminiscent of stepping back to better days and sheer luxury. The staff were lovely, helpful and obliging - often with a great sense of humour. We ate mainly in the hotel, eating in all the restaurants, around the pool for lunch and room service - all the food was excellent - and for someone whose suitcase is weighed down with packets of Immodium, remarkably illness free! It is a good time to stay because tourist numbers are down, hence the gardens were incredibly peaceful apart from bird song and the eagle flying overhead. Quiet does not however mean devoid of atmosphere - the history was there in spades but it did mean that we could thoroughly enjoy the swimming pool and take advantage of having a massage! Outside the hotel is lively, noisy, dusty and pure madness but wonderful if you enjoy Egypt. Don't miss sailing on a felucca or going by motor boat to banana island , Luxor museum is an absolute treasure and so is the caleche ride through the market - if you can bear to run the gauntlet of available drivers!! We will be back!

Stayed at the Winter Palace for almost a week in July and would love to return anytime. It has a fantastic location right on the water front and several minutes walk to nice restaurants. The hotel itself, and the grounds, are beautiful and well maintained. The rooms are quite large, well appointed, nice TVs with decent English channels, AC is strong, nice patios, wifi exists but you may have to go out into the hall for a decent signal. The hotel has one computer in the lower level for guest use. The pool and grounds are very nice, especially when it is 40+ degrees out!

Spa and massage centre are worth a visit if you have the time. Food was pretty good at the restaurants and room delivery, breakfast was nice with plenty of options.

Yes it will cost you more than any other hotel in Luxor excepting the Hilton; but if you want refined superb luxury in King Farouk's former Palace , this is for you. The rooms are comfortable, the lounges magnificent, the huge pools a delight, the Italian restaurant by the pool excellent for lunch; Beautiful gardens and a peaceful setting.
The decor of the main restaurant is a little disappointing , but the food good. For a beautifully served Dinner there is the 1813 Restaurant ,where the elegance demands a Jacket and tie. The service is excellent. Contrary tio some reviews,I would say that if you can afford it, there is no equal for the ambience of this hotel to stay in, in Luxor.Don't forget to take Mint Tea in the gardens in early evening - delightful.

Have stayed here many times over the years - there really is no better hotel in Luxor. There are other 5 star hotels in Luxor but they are not as good as this. Booked 3 rooms for the whole family to stay in the Pavillion Wing again ( these are lovely rooms) but on this occasion was upgraded to the Old Winter Palace - the main building - 3 rooms too. I cannot fault anything about this hotel and highly recommend it. As i mentioned, i have stayed here many times ( 10 x plus ) and have always has a great time. The hotel is steeped in history, has the most amazing vast tendered gardens and the pool is simply fantastic - i know from experience that these gardens and the sheer size of the pool is unequalled in Luxor. We had 3 children with us aged 5,7 and 9. The staff are friendly and always helpful and attentive. You receive a warm welcome on arrival and you feel totally relaxed and at home as soon as you enter. Extremely child friendly too. It really is a hidden gem. The Victorian room in the main hotel, very cosy and huge with inviting sofas, the royal bar with its wood panels and friendly barman, the amazing restaurant 1886, the massage room staff, the staff who make up your room..... the list goes on, i really cannot recommend this hotel enough. I will be returning to Luxor and will only ever book this hotel - trust me, if you don't stay here, you will pass the hotel and look at it from the outside and wish you had. Their is now development going on as they are building a new wing but i must stress, there was no noise or problems with facilities. Do not let this put you off staying - it did not interfere with our week trip at all. The hotel is central, 10 mins to the train station and boats to take you to the other side of the Nile for the Valley of the Kings are opposite the hotel. For a hotel that still feels like that Victorian luxury hotel, amazing staff, rooms, gardens and pool stay here - trust me, you will be glad you did and you will not he disappointed.

Room Tip: Garden View rooms are great as the gardens are amazing - Pavillion wing is cheaper but rooms still a...

With my family I stayed at the Winter Palace / Pavilion (The Pavilion is the second and more budget friendly building of the property)
We spent 10 days at this hotel (January 2011).
It was most enjoyable!

Positive
- The location: Only the road separates the hotel from the riverbank next to the Luxor temple, which is very central.
- At “The Pavilion” the rooms have recently undergone a soft refurbishment. Therefore they give a fresh impression (but don’t have a closer look at the finishing details!!). Good balcony with 2 easy chairs and a table and a great view over the garden. Easy to handle safe in the room. Flat screen TV.
- Splendid old and well kept wide garden with vast swimming pool. There is a snack restaurant next to the pool. Pool water temperature at 27° C! (= 80°F)
- Staff is very friendly and helpful. A special thanks to Mr Ahmed Orabi. He is very knowledgeable trustworthy and extremely helpful.
- Excellent breakfast with the possibility to take it “Al Fresco” at the terrace with garden view
- Though the Pavillion Bougainvillier restaurant is of a rather average standard, it might still be one of your best option in town (see further)

Negative
- No free wifi in the rooms or in the Pavilion building. Aconnection is available at a very high rate. There is one PC available at no cost next to the reception- but you have to be patient for your turn. Alternative: For a free Internet connection one can go to the Old Winter Palace lobby with the laptop. Very slow connection!
- Avoid periods with incentive groups. One night we experienced discotheque loud music in the garden till midnight and an overcrowded swimming pool.
- The restaurants and all beverages (minibar or bar etc…) are expensive. A 1,5 litre mineral bottle of water in the street cost 3 LE (0,40 Euro), a small 25 CC bottle in the hotel minibar cost 40 LE (4,6 Euro).
- The restaurants are of an OK quality. But not at a deluxe hotel level, exception made for the 1886 restaurant where tie for men is compulsory. A normal meal there would cost about 350 LE per person (about 60 US $ or 40 Euro).
- If you prefer a soft bed, you will find the mattress on the wood board a bit harsh!

Restaurants in Luxor.
We did not find good quality restaurants.
- “Maxim” Shara (street) Awoua Meya is the only one that was acceptable (Egyptian cuisine) 7/10
- The Thai restaurant at the Steigenberger hotel 4/10
- The Italian restaurant at the Iberotel 0/10
- Abu Zaid restaurant on the Cornish (next to the mummification museum) eating at your own risks.

Egyptian people are very hospitable. If you want to bring a present to an Egyptian family, flowers are not such a good idea, rather bring something sweet such as a cake

Airport transfer should cost 30 LE (you might consider a tip for the driver)

A must is making a tour above the West Bank by air balloon approximately 500 LE inclusive p/u and d/o at the hotel (aprox 85 US).
