We recently stayed in Luxor for one month (this is our fourth visit to Luxor) and we always stay at the Winter Place. The rooms are excellent. The garden is wonderful and the smell from the flowers (especially at night) is breathtaking. The sun beds around the pool are extremely comfortable. The staff are very friendly and make us feel welcome when we return each year. I would highly recommend this hotel and we hope to return again next year.

Room Tip: We prefer to overlook the garden rather than the swimming pool and a higher floors provides the nice...

we went for diner yesterday in the high class restaurant, hoping to enjoy really high class Sofitel standard, especially in such an amazing palace where so many stars went to spend time from A Christie, to Chruchill or more recently Sarkozy.
Nothing to say with the bar, very friendly and the cocktail menu was impressive of creativity and forgotten classic. Had the Tom Collins, and I think It'll be from now on my cocktail for 2012.
But why is whith this caothic dance of waiters to deal with a credit card machine not working. Seriously not very efficient, and you would expect more from the staff. Also, no possible transfer of cocktails bill to the restaurant?! how weird
I've nothing to say about the dining room, almost as beautiful as any Alain Ducasse at Plaza Athenée in Paris....very chic, superb silver plates and crystal glasses worth the detour as being the original marked from the WP logo...chic
Good service at the table....friendly, nice, attentive,...
But where the downfall was with the food, from the menu itself, I would say I was impressed, being french critic in a magazine, I was suprise by the level of complexity.
However, in the end, not to say that the food was not good, but I was expeting more from the decription. in the end simple food (don't get me wrong....good products) but used with no real creativity.
The cooking of the fish was nice, but too basic, no real uplift there. The lamb was certainly overcooked and bit chewy.
You can't expect much from this price I have to say, as it would be the price of a sunday roast in London or a trendy low cost restaurant in Paris...so cheap in the end. But i'm assuming that for an Egypt level it must be huge price. So i'm doing the advocate of people believing that Sofitel is high quality in the region, I afraid it is not. You better go in a local restaurant.
However, please got there and take pictures...the palace is amazing.

Very nice hotel in a place that needs more attention for tourists, the manager is French and they serve you very bad food in a country that offers so much good food: nobody wants to eat frozen tomato-mozzarella in Egypt!!
You don't help Egyptians

Room Tip: Very beautiful gardens

We were there before the revolution. Loved the elegant feeling of the older building. Our room was very nice facing the inside grounds. We went walking through the grounds, and went swimming in the grand pool. It was all a bit like aged elegance but not rundown. We all felt very pampered. We were on a small tour, and we all still dream of the honeycomb at breakfast. It was on its side with the honey dripping out. What can I say about the location- fantastic! The staff was very helpful. Bar was a great space. Felt a bit english of the old days.

lovely atmospheric hotel. rooms are big. The garden is beautiful and the heated swimming pool is fantastic. It's not shown very much on their website and was one of the highlights for us. We did travel with children and as quite a grand hotel with dress code etc. we felt they were not overly welcome in the evenings. Just something to consider, although I would still recommend this hotel regardless of whom you were travelling wth. We booked some tours with the travel agent just under the main steps which were also very good. Even withouh haggling we found we paid less than other people with different companies.

excellent hotel in central location in Luxor, with easy access to all the sights.
Positives - HIstoric grand building, fantastic grounds and gardens, choice of 3 or 4 restaurants on site, very good room service (especially if you tip them a couple of pounds), really good food, lovely outdoor pool, extensive breakfast buffet.
Negatives - quite a lot of road noise if you have a nile view room, but as other reviewers have commented, this is part of the atmosphere. If you want a quiet room, ask for one overlooking the gardens (but you miss out on seeing the hot air balloons in the morning taking off over the west bank), the only other negative I can think of is that the directory in the room seems out of date as the openinig times of the restaurants did not match to reality (but they may have altered opening times due to the general lack of tourists at present).
Conclusion: Great hotel, really convenient for the sights, no problem whatsoever in Luxor, very tourist friendly.

Room Tip: Nile view rooms have road noise, but its worth it for the views of the nile and the early morning ba...

We only stayed one night (Oct 8,2011) at the Winter Palace (cir.1886) and we wished we could have stay a few more. From the moment you step into the lobby you know you are some place special. The crystal chandeliers, the huge stair case and the reception rooms were all beautifully decorated with period furniture. We had originally booked a deluxe king and upon arrival we were informed we were upgraded to the Prestige Suite. We were escorted up to the suite by Christine. When she opened the door to the leading into the bedroom we couldn't believe how big the room was. We have stayed in may fine hotels around the world and this WAS THE BIGGEST room we had ever stayed in. The king bed seemed much larger then a regular king bed.( see attached photos). Then if that weren't enough Christine led us to another door leading to the living room and dining area of the suite. We couldn't believe it. We truly felt as if we were staying in a Palace. The rooms were richly decorated with antiques and the coffee table had an assortment of fresh fruit ,petit fours and bottled water. The bathroom was large also but not as well equipped as on would have expected seeing the way the rest of the suite was furnished. The shower was pretty basic with a large tub, shower curtain and hand held shower head. Bathroom amenities were by Hermes .The suite was spotless and the bed extremely comfortable. We were able to catch the sunset sitting out on the terrace over looking the Corniche and the Nile.We did order room service and it was delivered within the 30 minute time frame. Breakfast we very good and the perfect way to get the long day ahead started.
Our over all experience was The Winter Palace exceeded our expectations. The staff was very efficient and polite we felt we were treated very well from the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out. I would highly recommend The Winter Palace.
