We have just returned from yet another trip to this truly fantastic hotel. Mr. Ahmed Oraby and Mohammed are the best reception concierge staff I have ever encountered anywhere in the world. The Corniche restaurant served by Ali Sayed and Araby Ali the 2 chefs offer the best food it is possible to have served by Mohammed el Hassan who is the perfect waiter. Mr Hamdy is not only very efficient he is able to provide an impromptu cabaret like Charlie Chaplin and you cannot fail to be amused.. The staff work very hard to make your stay perfect and our stay can only be described as perfect they cannot improve on perfection. Many people are very saddened to hear Mr Ahmed Oraby might retire he is the most fantastic receptionist and can arrange anything is the sole of discretion and genuinely ensures your stay is perfect the only reward he wants is to hear you are happy.and enjoying your stay. Please please Soffitel do not let Mr. Oraby go he is the first person you meet and is a walking example of how perfection can be achieved. You deserve an extra star having such fantastic staff in this hotel. The taxis and caliche drivers who haunt the front of the hotel are the only draw back to this hotel and have become more intimidating through the down turn. It became impossible to use the front of the hotel but the exit to Television St leads you straight into the main area and the local people are most hospitable to tourists and friendly and helpful. Nile cruises in 2008 and 2009 were my partner and I's introduction to Egypt. Not a place I travelled to with much excitement. But how unfounded was my intrepidation. It hits you right between the eyes. The magic. The sights. The smells. The food. The people. The colours. The heat. The sunsets. The eternal mysterious Nile. One day we would come back. One day we would stay at a hotel that we passed twice, on our trip to the temples of Luxor and Karnak. We had seen it first in Death on the Nile, with David Suchet as Poirot. But never at its most magical. When the sun sets over the Valley of the Kings and the stone of its facade glows in the orange and red of the setting. This was the Winter Palace.
We had booked originally in the Pavillion wing. A modern building just behind the Winter Palace, surrounded by gardens. The price for the Palace was a little out of our range but neverless the Pavillion was the next best thing. However, because of the political situation affecting the country for the past twelve months, tourists have been thin on the ground and hotel rooms have remained empty. Which is why, during the transfer from the airport to the hotel we were given the good news that we had been upgraded to the Winter Palace itself.
We arrived very late and wasn't able to take in the details. The restaurant had stayed open for us but it was an extremely comfortable room we were shown to and a very welcome bed.
The following morning, on opening the french windows and stepping onto the balcony, the full impact of our surroundings were made clear. The most beautiful gardens greeted us. The greens and green-blues were stunning in the morning light. A fountain shimmered just below us. The air was thick with the smell of jasmine. The sound of birdsong came from a myriad of trees.
We were all inclusive which meant that we would be dining in the Bougainvillea restaurant in the new wing for breakfast and dinner, with lunch being served by the pool.
Thus was the pattern for the week until on the Sunday it was announced that meals would now be served in the Corniche restaurant in the Winter Palace.
Food was of a good standard but not that of a five star hotel. I have no problem with this. Other people may have.
The room itself had a high ceiling and was large. The bathroom was also large. Both were extremely clean and well kept. The beds were comfortable and roomy. It had a large balcony which held the sun until after mid day.
The public rooms were vast, especially the Victoria Lounge.
The front of the hotel has a large terrace at the top of sweeping steps and here you could have afternoon tea or a drink and watch the sunset.
There has to be pros and cons to any hotel wherever it is.
The pros included staff who were extremely friendly and attentive.
The cons were too insignificant to mention.
But one thing I must point out is, and it`s really not the hotel`s fault, but, again because of the situation and lack of tourists (only eight English people arrived on the Wednesday night including myself and my partner) plus a smattering who were already there, there is unfortunately a lot of hassle directly outside the hotel in the form of caleches (horse and carriage) who will not take no for an answer. The two friends who went with us went out for a walk to Luxor museum and one of the caleche`s followed them all the way and wouldn`t let up. When they came out of the museum it was waiting for them and followed them all the way back, during which the driver kept up a constant barrage of hassle. It was a general complaint from most of the guests in the hotel that the hassle has now reached fever pitch. It`s a very sad situation and I can appreciate the desperation in trying to live just a basic existence. But unfortunately it is having a detremental effect on tourism. Even so, the Egyptian people are extremely friendly.
The main tourist sites such as the Valley of the Kings and Queens, Karnak and Luxor were relatively empty. Great if you want photographs without crowds of people but not for the Egyptian economy.
The Winter Palace is an experience not to be forgotten. It was a memorable experience and one that we would love to repeat.

Room Tip: Best rooms at the Winter Palace are overlooking the gardens. The Nile view rooms are more expensive...

Such a fabulous hotel - beautiful design! The main restaurant was a bit random and the cheaper hotel next door with which you shared a pool wasn't very nice but overall great staff, good food and a beautiful location!

Our room was massive - literally you could have put an entire flat in there!

My partner and I have been regular visitors to Egypt for years and stayed in almost every hotel in Luxor. Our stay this time was perfect; nothing was too much trouble for the caring and attentive staff, from the room attendants to the breakfast man in the restaurant who is retiring this autumn after a career at the Palace. Our dinners in the Corniche restaurant were top quality. The room was spotless. The bar service and atmosphere relaxed. Breakfast was not the normal buffet due to the small number of guests but everything was done to ensure we had enough choice. The gardens were in top condition and the nighttime bar outside excellent for winding down at night after the heat of the day. Special mention for bookings manager Ossama for his assistance in making it a great stay. The hotel has been working for a couple of years to provide a more exclusive experience for its paying guests and this has been misinterpreted by some as being stand-offish but the change is based on feedback from their guests. Also top location for a stroll into town, to cross the Nile, pick up a boat or a nighttime wander to Luxor Temple. Superb views across Nile to the West Bank or of the garden from your room.

I decided to celebrate my 49th Birthady yesterday 2nd May 2014 by taking a High Tea in the Winter Palace with my companion . After reading other reviews i had mixed feelings about the High tea but i thought i would still like to visit . Our Holiday guide had contacted the hotel earlier in the day and was informed that teas would be served until 7 pm . We arrived a few minutes past 6 as we were running a little late due to traffic delays . We made our way up the grand staircase and my first impression was the hotel was looking her age with outside paintwork was starting to peel . when we had reached the top of the staircase we were stopped by an member of staff who rushed up the staircase he abruptly asked us if were residents ? We informed him that we were not but had come for High Tea !!! He muttered that it was not possible to take it as they had finished serving at 6pm . This member of staff was rather snooty and rather ill mannered he finally let us enter and made us take a seat in the back of the hotel . He kept telling me that short trousers were not allowed !!!! Seeing that the tempratures that day was nearly 42 C I had decided to wear some rather smart and expensive short trousers , and i had viewed on the internet that other people who had visited the hotel for HighTea had also worn short trousers and even beach wear shorts . After being handed a drinks menu were imformed again that High Tea had Finished , but something could be sorted if we waited the member of staff went away and several minutes later another member of staff came over and asked us if we were being attended to . He went away and another several minutes passed finally a young waiter came over and told us that we said that he could serve us High Tea !!! Then another waiter walked over to us and told us curtly that we were in the wrong room .and we could take High Tea outside on the terrace !!!!! We were frogged marched out side to the terrace . We felt that we were NOT WELCOME at this hotel (Seeing that visitors to Egypt has virtually disappeared i would of thought that members of the hotel staff would be encouraging people to visit not to drive them away) We were finally attended to by a charming waiter who served us tea when the tray of food arrived we were disappointed because there were no sandwiches instead there were various canopes which was a poor substitute for bread sandwiches !!! This hotel is relying on its once now fading grandeur but that is not enough !!!!

Dear Guest,
First and foremost allow me to thank you for your loyalty shown in the sharing of the experience you had at the Sofitel Luxor Winter Palace especially on such an occasion i.e your birthday. That's why i took personally charge to investigate what exactly happened.
I think the problem started with the timing of the HighTea which is fixed at the Winter Palace from 4pm till 6 pm since the inseption of this concept. but i assume the Holiday Guide has given you wrong information about it. In fact, the timing is posted in the Lobby and no Employees have the right to change it. Of course we make lot of exceptions with our Guests where we extend the time, but I assume we didn't have enough information of the time you would be arriving, which generated this problem, and which at the same time got the Employess to take time to get back to you as they should have an approval. Same would stand for the selection, as the kitchen would prepare quantities for the time of serving, that is maybe why the selection was not up to your expectations.
The terrace you were ecsorted at in the beginning is not the back of the hotel, but it is the Royal garden terrace.
Having said all the above, there is nothing that could compensate or justify your bad experience, once again especially on your 49th birthday, that is why I have given clear instructions to put up a new proceedure for the High tea at the Winter Palace, and I hope we get the chance to host you and show you our real hospitality.
