Beautiful hotel in spectacular gardens. Right on the Nile. Calm quite rooms, marvellous old fashioned service, courtesy. Good food. Nothing was too much, all requests attended too.

My husband and I stayed at the Old (not the new Pavilion wing) Winter Palace for two nights during our visit to Luxor. It was a wonderful experience:

- we had booked a standard room but they kindly upgraded us to a luxury room with a verndah overlooking the gorgeous gardens.
- the food/room service was decent
- the hotel decor is absolutely stunning. From the bar to the foyer to the lounge - the hotel has preserved its old world charm. Even if you dont stay there its well worth a visit just to walk through the grounds and have a cup of tea.
- the staff was kind enough to give us a tour of the Presidential Suite which was beautiful as can be expected.
- the verandah where jazz is played in the evenings is wonderful too and a great place to relax watching boats on the Nile and the gentleman behind the bar has worked at the hotel for years.
- the garden grounds are well worth a wander.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit and would love to return here. After a great day out in Luxor it felt good coming back to our comfortable hotel!

Fantastic location with Luxor temple just a couple minute walk down the block, the Luxor Museum four minutes by car, and the temples of Karnak about a 15 minute ride. Across the street from the hotel is the cruise ship dock with a long multi block bazaar of shops along this waterfront pedestrian drag. Immediately in front of the hotel is the main street in the city which runs parallel with the Nile. Taxis and horse carriages line up to take the tourist anywhere he wants to go. Just be careful not to let them talk you into straying off course or else it will take lots of time and baksheesh to get back on track to your desired location.

The Winter Palace has an original old section and several newer additions. These all have different pricing structures based on perceived desirability and luxury level. I was in the newest addition, the Sofitel Pavilion, a mid priced property that will soon be eclipsed by a taller hotel which will block the already minimal view of the Nile. But my gigantic corner room was bigger than my first apartment and the view off the balcony was like looking onto a fine golf course, flower garden, and arboretum all rolled into one. The grounds of the complex were beautifully landscaped; a park like oasis in the hot town of Luxor. The manicured lawns and native date palms meandered around the various pools and hotel buildings. Reservations at any of the hotel facilities got you access to any of the restaurants, pools, health spas, etc.

My room was immaculate, expansive, and tastefully decorated with artwork reminiscent of ancient Egypt without being tacky. All utilities functioned as expected, all modern amenities were included: satellite TV, internet, safe, fridge w/ mini bar, coffee maker, hair dryer, etc and the bed had a wonderfully firm mattress. An especially nice touch was the computer with free internet access available in the lobby, a sign on the desk requested no more than a 15 minute duration.

Meals in local restaurants were usually a better value, with more authentic ethnic spicing, than at the hotel restaurants. All the hotel’s restaurants enforced a “slacks only” rule at dinnertime and pushed their multi dish buffet of the day, but high prices and mediocre quality made them sparsely patronized. Service, however, from both restaurant and hotel staff was impeccable. Sort of like a throw back to British colonial manners.

All in all, the hotel is a fine, comfortable base of operations for striking out to see all the sights on both side of the Nile. Although I only spent four days/three nights I could easily see myself returning if ever back in ancient Thebes and most heartily recommend the property.

I arrived yet again at the sweeping steps of the old winter palace with its oppulent red carpet and enter the grand old reception.Greeted by the wonderful concierges and the even more lovely guest relations Wessam.the warmth of welcome here is non-negotiable than any hotel l have ever known.
l again stayed in my beautiful peaceful garden room and slept in the most comfortable
bed you could possibly imagine.Room service is impeccable and the laundry sevice is second to non.She even repairs yours clothes if she sees a fault.
Abdul at the pool and also his team deliver a fantastic service in the blistering heat.
The royal bar staff are fabulous and the new grand piano is definately in tune. Also not
forgetting Nabir the 1886 hero who is so professional in his dutiesand the breakfast staff
who tender to every need including their famous rare loose teas.
On this visit l also decided to visit the new Hilton, it is a fantastic new hotel but it does not hold a light in comparison to the Old Winter Palace with its charm grandeur and warmth. A lot of this is also down to the asssistant general manager with his charm and presence.See you all soon June x

We stayed in the Pavilion, which is in the garden behind the winter palace hotel. It had a large room which had very comfortable twin beds. Large bathroom, a bit old fashioned absolutely spotlessly clean. We have been to Egypt before so understand tipping is essential. So we had fabulous service. the pool and restaurants around it were great. We found room service excellent and spent a few evenings on our balcony overlooking the gardens enjoying the peace and quiet. The hotel enables you to do the sightseeing and cultural sights easily, and then provides a haven of tranquility from the outside world when you return. Try a drink or cup of tea on the Corniche in the afternoon early evening watching the world go by. Luxor and the Winter Palace a great holiday destination !

We have just completed our 4th stay at the Old Winter Palace in Luxor. It almost goes without saying that we love this hotel, with its antiques and opulent decor that reflects its 19th century origins. Entering the beautiful reception lobby is like stepping back in time. The charming Concierge and reception staff could not be more welcoming and helpful, this is equally true of all the staff in the restaurants, bars, pool attendants etc. During our stay we ate at both the restaurants in the main hotel. Both the formal 1886 restaurant and the less formal Corniche restaurant combine excellent food with excellent service. Even if you haven't packed a jacket and tie for the 1886 restaurant, the hotel are happy to loan one. We also ate at the poolside Italian restaurant which also serves good food. The traditional bedrooms are beautiful with high ceilings and very large windows with antique style fixtures and fittings. Every day we looked forward to the towel sculptures and flower arrangements left by the turn down service. The hotel is perfectly positioned for sightseeing but if like us on this visit you just want to recharge your batteries the pool is beautiful and is of a good size and the gardens are stunning.

I was absolutely thrilled with the Winter Palace. The restaurants were wonderful (including the buffet breakfast), the gardens are amazing, and short of a slightly disappointing shower head, I'm really struggling to find anything that wasn't above expectations. Everything from the complimentary box of macaroons left as a welcome gift to the travel tips offered by the restaurant manager made us feel extremely well looked after. I would definitely stay there again- and hopefully will!
