Pavillon Winter Luxor
Ranked #7 of 54 Hotels in Luxor
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 March 2014

We have visited the Pavilion rooms Winter Palace 8 times over the last 10 years or so, and never tire of the hotel. The rooms form a block away from the main road in the grounds of the Winter Palace Hotel. The Winter palace hotel itself commands a prime position in Luxor with a view over the Nile towards the Valley of the Kings. We have stayed in the Winter palace on 1 occasion, which came by way of an upgrade on one visit as the Pavilion rooms were closed for refurb. Both locations are extremely comfortable, with AC in the rooms which is a must. Sitting on the terrace with a beer as the sun goes down in the evening is fantastic.

The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily, and the room attendants are meticulous and always leave some for of towel art on your bed. The staff are very friendly and really out to make your stay a pleasure. There are 3 restaurants in the hotel offering Silver service in the 1886 or if alfresco is your thing then a comfortable table around the pool could be for you, the food is excellent with themed nights around the pool area offering traditional Egyptian as well as European food. The pool area is so peaceful with pool side service to keep you fed and watered.

The culture in Egypt is to tip, Egyptians are quite blunt and make it obvious they expect tips, from a bathroom attendant to the pool man, they thrive on tips. I found that tipping the staff in the first few days at the hotel only serves to up the attention. The location of the hotel in Luxor is great fro exploring. within yards of Luxor temple, a short Kalech or taxi drive away to the Luxor museum, and 25 mins to the west bank for Luxors open air museum of the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens Hapshepsut, and so much more.

The city of Luxor has many restaurants if eating in the hotel is not for you, The Green Lantern & Puddle duck are well worth a visit, run by English offering good home cooking in comfortable surroundings.

The markets are a must, but be careful the stall owners will hand you goods and pressurise you to pay, hassle is the biggest draw back with the local shops, it can be quite oppressive, even down to venturing outside the hotel you find yourself under siege from the taxi drivers and Kalesh owners. Make sure before taking a taxi or Kalesh ride that you confirm how much it will cost, and confirm the currency too, they are known to say 5 pounds you think he is offering 5 Egyptian (or 50p in our language) they will then demand £5.00 English. Walking along the Corniche is great to take inn the culture, but be warned you are constantly pestered by local vendors Taxi drivers, shoe shine, Kalesh drivers. As a tip, if you find a good taxi driver, or Kalesh driver take their number and they too will look after you throughout your trip

I have a taxi driver friend I call on every year, he drops everything when I call and drives us around he will sit and wait if we go to the west bank, he take us to the bazaars and markets and we don't get pestered we can sit in a coffee shop and feel totally safe and pay Egyptian price for all our souvenirs.

Room Tip: Leave it to chance, we have never had a bad room yet

Just returned from a lovely weeks holiday here, for the first time experienced an all inclusive experience, which is also new for the pavilion. The staff in every area cannot do enough to help, and should there not be much evening food choice are only too happy to try and offer something else - just ask - as I said, they are trying to get this right. Coupled with Luxor being very quiet at the moment clearly providing an extensive menu would not work. Room cleanliness - very good, staff excellent, pool and gardens to die for. We travelled on a package with Thomson holidays and the overall experience was great. We also used Cheops travel, just outside the main Winter Palace hotel to book excursions and his people were very good indeed. As a guest of the Pavillion you can use facilities in the fabulous main Winter Palace, but you have to pay extra, or add it to your room bill. We would recommend tea on the terrace at sunset - for 4 people this cost equivalent of £60 but was lovely and an excuse to dress up a little. All in all the accommodation and situation was really convenient. The only downside to Luxor itself is because tourists are only just starting to come back, there is a high amount of people begging you to take their boat trip - taxi - horse and carriage, and can be a bit tiring - so be prepared to be firm.

Room Tip: A room on a higher floor will give you a better view of the wonderful oasis like gardens

I stayed here two nights with a friend. Room was fine, with balcony and garden view. Garden area is very beautiful, and with a sizable pool. Nice breakfast buffet in the more historical winter palace hotel, which also had a really cool library bar. For the price we paid I felt we got a lot of value. The staff was also very friendly and let us stay a little longer in our room since our flight departed late. They also booked a guided tour of the valley of the kings, the hatshepsut temple and the colloses of Memnon - and we were very satisfied with the guide, he was friendly, knowledgable, and spoke English very well.

We stayed here for 4 nights from the 18th to the 22nd February, and wow what a beautiful hotel, we used the restaurants in the winter palace hotel, and the pavilion is set in the winter palace grounds, the garden is amazing and so well looked after. The rooms are large with big bathrooms. The cleanliness in the hotel and grounds was impeccable. Staff were friendly, helpful and polite. Pool area was brilliant and the pool was very warm. Towels were brought to you and laid on the sunbeds, the pool bar and restaurant, was amazing, the food was lovely and service second to none. The winter palace restaurants are fantastic and service was amazing, at breakfast there was so much food to choose from, freshly squeezed fruit juices and fresh pressed coffee. Evening meals had a good choice on the menu, and food was to a very high standard. We used room service on a couple of evenings and ate on our balcony, over looking the wonderful gardens we were expecting the usual food on a tray, but they arrived with it on a table which was set up where ever you wanted it, and it looked beautiful, the food was cooked to perfection and tasted great. I highly recommend this hotel, it is worth the extra cost. When I go back to Luxor, this is the hotel I will be staying in. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff.
Excellent hotel.

We booked this 28 day, Bed and Breakfast, deal with Accors Hotels. Please always check when booking what you are actually booking, i.e. if you want B&B make sure it says so! I think you get value for money.
Rooms - They are large and airy with fairly large balconies on which you can sit and watch the sunrise/sunset or call room service and have breakfast/dinner on it (if breakfast is not included)
Room Service - We had a few meals in our room. Do not order two full meals for two, since you will get far too much food. We used to order one salad, one main course and one dessert which did both of us. We always found something to eat.
House-Keeping – Wife wished she could get them home to do the flat to the same standard. We used the laundry quite often. Not sure what Mrs eLaReF would do without it. Prices seem to have stayed the same over the last couple of years, so when we go home, the only dirty clothing is the last two days’ worth.
Reception – Mr Oraby, who is the ‘main man’ there, will be retiring this year - unfortunately. If anything is wrong, he gets it sorted. Whilst we look forward to meeting his replacement, his shoes will be very hard to fill.
Pool and Pool staff - The pool is heated from October to the beginning of April. You sign your name and room number in a book and the pool staff will then take you and towels to any sun bed which is available. If you want extra shade they will move the movable umbrellas to you. Nothing is too much trouble.
Snacks, drinks and lunch are served from the Pool Restaurant. You can just order water and they will bring it to your sun bed in a wine cooler with a glass. You can even order your lunch to be brought to you if, like me, you are too lazy to move.
Breakfast is served in the Corniche just now from 5:30 to 10:30am. They cater for all nationalities so they have something for everyone in the buffet. They will bring you fresh hot water for your tea and coffee and hot or cold milk. Again ask if you require help - the staffs are there to help and they do it well. They may be reopening the Pavilion’s own restaurant, the Bougainvillier, soon, so you will get your breakfast in it, rather than walk through the gardens to the Old Winter Palace.
Wifi – Was available in our room and was free.
I am always amazed how many people go to Egypt and expect everyone to speak English. Many of the staff do have 2nd or 3rd languages, but they aren’t necessarily English. We met many other European nationalities there. Again, if there is a problem, let them know so they can sort it.

The Pavillon Winter Palace is a newer building in the grounds of the historic Luxor Winter Palace Hotel (the Luxor Winter Palace has been the premier hotel in Luxor for over 100-years).
This means you get to experience most of the aspect of the Winter Palace, at a much lower cost, including the beautiful grounds and pools, fabulous dinning rooms, grand entrance etc.
We had a family holiday over Christmas and New Year's in the Pavillon and were not expecting to be able to swim. However, the pool was heated to 28 degrees and in the afternoon the air temperature was around 25-28 degrees (we have had experience before of Luxor Hotels saying their pool was heated, but then finding the water too cold for the children to swim in). So we would go sightseeing in the morning and spend the afternoons around the pool, which kept the children very happy. As the hotel is in the centre of Luxor, beside Luxor temple, you can walk to many sights and save a lot of time and hassle of negotiating taxis etc. Despite being in the centre, the hotel is quiet - especially the rooms opening into the garden. The staff were all lovely and the rooms in the new building are what you would expect from this class of hotel, although unmemorable, other than having nice balconies onto the garden.

We just got back from a wonderful 10 day trip to Egypt and the best hotel we stayed at was the Pavillon Winter. The room was spacious, very well furnished and immaculate and the balcony overlooked the absolutely beautiful garden which is so peaceful in comparison to the rest of the city. We were very fortunate because we were able to use all the common areas of the Winter Palace, including the lovely restaurant where breakfast was served in grand manner. The staff is very kind. We also took advantage of the outdoor heated swimming pool. Relaxing by the pool was pure heaven

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have the best views. However, keep the window closed at night because there a...
