“great hotel”
Reviewed 3 May 2010

Had a great holiday at el luxor hotel. We took our 2 eighteen year old grand children with us.The hotel was very central and easy access to the local ferry for exploring the west bank.We had 2 good rooms overlooking the nile with great views,,very clean and well serviced. The guest relations guy Aly Mohamed was very helpfull and made you feel at home.
We explored in detail the west bank,,seeing all the villages and visiting the schools. The new excavations at Habu are very interesting.
Also a good place to eat and relax is Al salam camp,,Ahmed is very obliging and will help you arrange any trips.
Luxor is changing very rapidly sometimes not for the better,as said in my previous review.
We explored the new gourna where the local people have been re-housed,due to thier houses being demolished .
Also the avenue of spinx is progressing fast, again property being demolished to make way for it.
We were delayed 5 days by the volcanic ash but the hotel and T Cook looked after us ,,no problems,,,extended holiday,,,,thank you,,,

after our nile cruise, we were placed in this hotel following the Iceland Ash problem ...we were there five days coutesy of Thomas Cook and we could not falut its location, cleanliness, and staff ....thank you

We were glad we did not upgrade to a room with a view the reason is the road traffic...the court bedrooms were very quiet at the back of the hotel ...so I would suggest if you ask for a quiet room at the back

We came back on 14th Aprill after a 7 night stay. We booked pretty last minute so this hotel was all that was available. When we checked in brochures this hotel was rated as 4 stars but i would say it's more 2/3 stars.

When we checked in we were given a ground floor room in the building past the gardens even though we had booked a city/nile view room. It was small and cramped and no space for 2 six years old to roam around. We raised this with the reception staff and straight away they moved us to a room on the second floor. The room was bigger and better, had a small balcony with a nile view. Night time was a different issue, loads of noise from the street below - constant hornng from the drivers and around 3am every morning we could hear the prayers from the local mosque speakers!

Room was basic, no tea/coffee facilities. Had a fridge which was constantly humming! It was clean enough to sleep in but not really high standard clean. Room and hotel is a bit dated and could do with modernising.

All staff - reception, waiters/resses, houskeepers etc are all very friendly and helpfull. For 2 nights there were a group of young lads staying in the room opposite and a room down from us and they were making a lot of noise into the early hours which distrupted our sleep - made one call to the reception and the manager sorted them out within 5 minutes. Staff were very good.

We have 6 year old twin daughters and they loved the childrens play area by the pool. It kept them busy as did a visit to the pool. The breakfast is ok for the firtst few days but does become boring - pastries, breads, egyptian dishes, stand with a chef making eggs. There was no fruit available for breakfast which would have been nice.

There is a McDonalds behind the Luxor Temple where you can feed the kids as we had to on several occasions as our girls got bored of the breakfast.

Location is ideal, 5 minute walks to Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum. 15 minute walk to Luxor temple. To the left of the hotel there is a shopping arcade - you can take a short cut through there to cut your walking time to Luxor temple or the shops. If you have no young children you can walk it to Temple of Karnak in 30 minutes but as it was hot and we had young kids with us we caught a taxi which took us around 5/10 mins.

Be aware of the local caleche (horse carriage drivers) - as soon as you step out of the hotel they will be constantly on your back and hassel you forever for a ride and they can never take no for an answer. After the first day they had totally done our family's head in!

Opposite to the hotel and down the step to the side of the nile is Captain Ahmed who took us on a few trips to the west bank. He was ok but before commiting we would recommend checking around with other tour providers. Avoid banana island - was a complete waste of time and we were told that this was the place where Moses was put in his basket (which we don't really believe) the place was very shabby.

Word of warning - once you go anywhere with someone - be it a tour guide or a caleche driver they will never leave you alone, they will want to know everythng - where you been, where you ate etc. They can be over friendly and sometimes we just needed our own space!

I would recommend travelling with Jolly's travel agent (next to the winter palace hotel), we booked a day trip to Cairo with them and Mohammed and his colleagues were lovely and very helpfull. The guide they organised for us in Cairo was excellent. Well worth checking with them when looking for tours.

Overall, hotel was ok, location is ideal. It welcomes young children and staff are friendly. People in Luxor are very welcoming, they love children and it is an amazing place to vist.

just back from staying at this hotel with my daughter (22) and sister in law for a birthday celebration girlie holiday. I would definately be back, hotel is clean, but basic. The icing on the cake for our very good experience was the staff, they were exceptional nothing was too much bother for them. Alli the hotel guest relations manager was a one off, in all my years of travelling I have never come across a nicer person he was a diamond in the sand !
Food was fine only was B & B but it was fine and pool sides snacks were also o.k and would cook anything off the menu if you asked them without batting an eyelid.
In a nutshell the staff's friendliness and helpfullnes far outweighed the bricks and mortar of the hotel.

Lovely hotel especially the staff who are all very welcoming especially Ali in Guest Relations. It was Ali that made the holiday worth while and him that will make us return VERY VERY helpful. Had few problems with room and Ali got Managers together and it was sorted very quickly, the Housekeeping was our main complaint but no sooner had I spoken to Ali was it being dealt with. Personally speaking Ali should be running this hotel instead of the dozen or so Managers!!!!!! Once again change over of Management -PLEASE this time get it right for your staff (as they are all so nice) as well as customers.

We have been to Luxor many times but never at this hotel before. We chose it as it seemed to be well positioned on the Corniche and we had previously stayed further out of town. It was also considerably cheaper than the Sonesta where we usually stay. The manager was incredibly helpful when, within five minutes of arriving, I realised that I had left my handbag on the transfer bus with money, credit cards and passports in it. He contacted the company who rang the driver and when they had finished dropping off everyone else they came back with my bag and its contents intact. Brilliant. The lobby is large and there are several seating areas with a bar, snack bar and internet area. The lifts are a bit of a death trap! Watch out for slamming doors. The room was fine - everything that you expect, including a good sized fridge. Decent sized verandah overlooking the Nile with a view across to the mountains and the Temple of Hatschepsut. Spotlessly clean - serviced daily with clean towels. Lovely room boy. They provide a hairdryer if you ask for one. The beds were a bit firm for me. We had two singles but our friends next door had a massive kingsize bed. We were on the second floor and if we return we would ask for a fourth floor room as our side view to where the sunset would have been was obscured by a building next door. But we still had a great view of the Nile. The swimming pool is lovely and you can get food served to your sunbed or go over to the cafe at the side of the pool. Prices are not too bad. We stayed half board and it was good value for money. You can eat in one of the other restaurants in the hotel if you get bored with the standard restaurant food and pay the difference if the meal is more expensive. Breakfast was good - a fair choice. Dinner every night had a chicken, fish and beef dish with other dishes like moussaka, etc. Lots of vegetables and salads. All perfectly fine and the lentils were delicious. We did sometimes find ourselves eating in a practically empty dining room which was a bit lacking in atmosphere, but no worries. Price of wine is average for hotels in Egypt (the Omar Kayam is the best). Don't have Obelisk. The bar downstairs is nice and there is plenty of seating outside to sit and watch the world go by but drinks are a bit pricey. We tried the local vodka which was awful so we asked for Finlandia vodka at twice the price which we got. However, the next night when we asked for Finlandia they tried to work the local vodka on to us but they didn't get away with it. Don't bother with the cocktails - awful, pricey and no alcohol. The hotel is well placed for all the attractions of Luxor. The staff were lovely and we would definitely go back. If you go and you need a fabulous guide - a lovely lady with perfect English - we have known her for years - send me a message and I can give you her contact details. She is a gem!
