“A decent hotel on my first and last visit to Egypt”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

We stayed here in oct 11 for 1 week B&B. The hotel is located just outside of Luxor, which is nice, as the centre of Luxor isn't the greatest! The room was very pleasant, however, the bathroom hasn't seen a thorough clean in a while. Whilst in the (very low to the floor) bath, I noticed short and curly hairs on the toilet pedestal - just what you don't want to see! Along with what appeared to be dried pee. Lovely! But apart from that, the room was fine.
The breakfast was spot on and it was nice to sit outside and look over the Nile first thing on a morning.
The pool area was lovely and on the days when we failed to snap up sun beds around the pool, we managed to get sun beds on the lawn overlooking the Nile.
The free boat ride into Luxor was great, but be prepared for being hassled once you get off the boat in Luxor. The free bus into Luxor was great too.
We did eat in the hotel, but the food was quite pricey.
Overall, a nice hotel but I would not go back. Not the hotels fault, I just wasn't keen on Luxor. After seeing all of the nearby archeological sites (which were amazing!) I was ready for home.

We stayed here for a week in May and from arriving at reception to the end of our holiday it was perfect. Just a couple of miles outside Luxor City away from the noise of the City. The hotel provided regular mini-bus shuttles into the City but as an alternative we took the regular hotel boat (about a 30 seater boat) ride instead, great free sevice that takes 20 to 30 minutes down, or is it up the Nile several times a day right into the City centre.
Food was outstanding with very high standards and lots of choice, either serve yourself or have table service. Rooms were stylish and very clean with a flat screen and sky TV. The hotel pool was great and the tropical grounds were really nice sloping down to the jetty where the hotel boats were mored.
In the eveings we sat on the roof terrace in the warm breeze looking across the nile towards the lights from the Valley of the Kings, very romantic.
Definately one f the best hotels I have ever stayed in for both quality of accomodation and food.

Room Tip: Every room is similar in the low-rise accomodation

We stayed at the Sofitel Karnak Luxor hotel for three days/nights following our cruise to Aswan and back to Luxor. The hotel itself lay on the outskirts of Luxor inside its own garden compound, there was almost a "check-post" to get into the hotel grounds when we arrived. We stayed in a lovely garden room on the ground floor, there was a patio where we could sit and enjoy tea or whatever, there were lovely birds in the garden and everything was so peaceful. The room was very large with a very comfortable bed, a lovely bathroom with everything we could possibly need and more. There was wifi in the room, my partner is very often online so that's important. Breakfast was a buffet in the morning with a good selection, the same for dinner in the evening, every kind of dish, both international and Egyptian/Middle Eastern for those brave enough to try. Wifi was free in the reception area, but I could not get YouTube while I was there, and I later heard that was because YouTube was blocked in Egypt because of the recent scurrilous video about the Prophet. There was a lovely large garden and grounds, large pool with comfortable loungers/chairs, and a garden restaurant as well. I would absolutely recommend staying at the Karnak Luxor and we would certainly go back there ourselves.

Room Tip: We saw no other rooms, but the garden room we had on the ground floor was fantastic and we recommend...

Writing this review several months after the holiday, with the benefit of time to reflect, I feel this was an enjoyable place to stay. The hotel is ideally located away from the hurly-burly of Luxor itself, but within a short (and exceptionally inexpensive) taxi ride. The property itself is well-maintained and feels peaceful and safe; the experience of being in the hotel lends itself to quiet relaxation not least because there are plenty of places to sit either with your book or in company: the lobby, the lounges, the pool areas and the excellent gardens adjoining the Nile. We were not immediately struck by the quality of the main restaurant. In particular, our first two dinners were a little lack-lustre, of the disappointing buffet variety. However, the manager, Hasan, was superbly responsive to our feedback, took immediate action and ensured that for the remainder of our ten-night stay we were very well looked after indeed. Lunches by the pool, with excellent service from Nouby, and dinner in the a la carte restaurant were both memorable experiences, and generally the service from all the staff, whether restaurant or elsewhere, was impressive. The staff were key in making this a good stay. Otherwise, the pool is fantastic (with a proper deep end unlike so many hotels which offer nothing more than 4ft) and the facilities are decent with just a hint of shabby about them. While I would almost certainly stay at the Winter Palace if I visited Luxor again (a gorgeous colonial style hotel) the Karnak Sofitel can certainly be recommended as a peaceful spot offering good service, good bathing and an understated charm.

NB The Sofitel is served by a group of hotel-specific taxis. We were fortunate to meet Ahmed on Day 2 (he drives the sports car) who arranged everything for us for the remainder of the stay: hot-air balloon, Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Aswan, Abu Simbel, camel-riding... and collected us when we got lost in Luxor. He is a super driver, speaks excellent English and knows how to fix anything for your stay at a good price.

Room Tip: This is a large property comprising many rooms in different blocks. We were given a selection of roo...

Excellent accomodation, staff, food etc. Everything about this hotel was great.
We finished a 19 day holiday here and just wanted to relax.
Our room was spacious with a private balcony, good sized bathroom and fridge. TV with decent range of programes. Coffee making facilities also.
Staff were very helpful and polite.
Food was excellent.
We were all inclusive and had wine with meals, drinks at swim up pool bar and in the evenings in the Howard Carter bar. Teas, coffees, soft drinks and local alcoholic drinks were included as well as water and a bottle of water daily to your room.
Lovely pool and also a childrens pool and playpark
Setting was ideal, on the edge of town, and running to the nile down long grassy banks.
Did not use gym or spa so cannot comment

Room Tip: Layout is very private, we were only there two days, but I think any room would have been fine

First time visiting Egypt. Had a wonderful time at Sofitel Karnak. Very well looked after hotel, staff were superb. Stayed all inclusive, food and drinks were plentiful. Taxi's were readily available courtesy of Gadafi the taxi driver, visits to Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple and the Valley Of The Kings were all made available. Great Friday night Egyptian entertainment by staff, would definitely go back again everyone loved it.

Room Tip: Go for a ground floor apartment

We stayed in the Sofitel Karnak after a week cruising the Nile. We'd had such a good time on the boat (MS Monica), that we were a bit worried that we might not like the hotel, but we needn't have worried.Everything about the Sofitel is wonderful. The rooms are large and very clean with a good size bathroom and very effective air conditioning. The beds are especially comfortable. Our room opened out onto beautiful gardens full of birds and lizards.I have only one small criticism of the room and that is that it only had one socket, which with mobile phones and digital cameras to be charged, proved to be a bit of an inconvenience, but not a major problem. All the grounds are extremely well kept and a beautiful haven just outside of Luxor itself. The pool is large and well maintained by the pool staff, who put out your towels every morning and walk round every couple of hours to make sure that you're comfortable and happy. The lobby area is bright and clean and reception staff very friendly and helpful. There is also a great coffee shop there and some really good little shops, which are as cheap if not cheaper, than those outside the hotel,You also don't get hassled and the staff are so nice that we became very friendly with them all.
The restaurant is extremely clean and beautifully decorated and all the staff, from the chef to the waiters, will do all they can to make mealtimes memorable. The food is delicious and plentiful and there something to suit all tastes. The pool side restaurant also offers a good choice at lunchtime and again, excellent service. The hotel is in a beautiful location on the banks of the Nile, extremely clean and well maintained, but it really is the staff who made our stay special. They really are wonderful, especially considering that on our last day,Thomson made the decision to evacuate all its clients from Luxor due to the troubles. It was very sad to see the worry on the faces of the staff,as they must've known that this could be their last day of work for a long time, but they were very professional and continued to offer first class service, despite the fact that one or two of the guests were so upset at the curtailment of their holiday, that they actually became physically abusive. After witnessing this ,I was so embarrassed about the actions of another Brit, that I felt I had to apologise to the manager. He was so gracious and dignified, but clearly distraught. All I can say is that anyone who is thinking about visiting this hotel, once the situation is calm again, please go.You won't be disappointed. We'll be returning just as soon as we can.

Room Tip: Opt for a ground floor garden room.Wonderfully peaceful with a good size terrace.
