“SUPERB!”
Reviewed 23 August 2009

The hotel was absolutely excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. I agree with the comments about the reception staff but this is in no way a reason not to stay at this wonderful place. I would certainly return if I came to Luxor again.

Overall great location. Rooms spacious, we chose a side Nile view. Towels changed twice daily with fresh toiletries. Spotless hotel and restaurants. Varied menus and a choice of restaurants. If you are on half board an allowance is made towards a meal in the other restaurants. Italian (Beban) very good and one of the best quality pizzas that I have tasted. Tepanyaki Japanese also good. Pool quiet with plenty of sunbeds. All staff could not do enough for you and remembered us on first name terms throughout the holiday. We did the tours of the temples, a flight to Cairo and the West bank. We hired a very experienced and inexpensive egyptologist whose details I can provide on request.

We have just returned from a great stay at the Sonesta.
From our first contact with the hotel - via email to arrange transfers from the airport (LE50 in a car or LE90 in a luxury Previa) - to our departure, the whole experience was fantastic.
The staff were very friendly and ultra efficient and couldn't do enough to make the holiday any better.
All of the 4 restaurants which we tried are very good indeed - the poolside for lunch (chips, salads, pasta, stuffed pittas), the Italian (as you would expect, plus amazing value fillet steak in pepper sauce for LE75, and a superb Chateau Briand for LE150 for 2 people), the Japanese (excellent terrayaki, tepanyaki and sushi) and the main restaurant for the huge buffet breakfast.
The poolside bar staff and towel guys around the pool were great - efficient but not intrusive, and they will save you the same beds every day,to save you getting up too early.
Our only criticism of the hotel was the lack of atmosphere in the main bar. Often, we were the only customers, and it lacked life and soul.
On a separate note, if you are travelling with a package company, check out the prices of trips with the local operators (like Jolley's who we used), all situated on the corniche by the Winter Palace Hotel who are far cheaper and often far better. For example daytrip to Cairo £200 with Thomas Cook or £110 with Jolley's for the same trip.
Overall, this is a gem of a hotel, worthy of its high ratings, and we would have no hesitation in staying there again or recommending it to everyone.

I recently stayed in the Sonesta for a week and loved it. The rooms were really well presented and very clean and comfortable. I had a city view which was a bit noisy but that didnt really bother me. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. The pool and pontoon was a really nice place to relax away from the hassle of the salesmen and Caleche drivers: respite in the middle of chaos. The staff make this place a great place to stay; polite and courteous and a tip is never expected but if you have an experience like I did during my stay, you will feel compelled to tip at the end of your time there. Although the pool is a bit small its not an issue and theres loads of space to sunbathe and enjoy the sun without being practically sat on someones knee. The pontoon gives great views of the nile and its really nice to sit there at night and have a beer as the sun goes down.

The bar and food prices are reasonable seeing as the hotel is a decent one and if you consider going out for a soft drink/beer etc and running the risk of being mithered to death in comparison with the marginal increase in price at the hotel bar; you wont be too bothered about paying a little extra. However if you are more conscious of your spending, theres a shop next to arkwrights on Joseph street not far from tutti frutti tea rooms that sell most things youll need. The only thing you might find hard to get hold of is alcohol (so get what you need on the plane if you fancy a little drink on your balcony people watching) but youll make savings for everything else: ice creams, cokes, crisps etc. As for trips dont just book them at the drop of a hat, it is worthwhile shopping around and if your'e brave and have the gift of the gab you can barter and haggle for a competitive price to make your money go further. As for the caleche drivers outside, negotiate a price and stick to it. Do not take anything that is initially said or agreed with drivers, shop-owners or in fact anyone there for granted because in some situations youll find that they will move the goalposts. This cant be said for all but to avoid getting your fingers burned and your wallet lightened be on the ball always make sure they fully understand exactly what you want and how much you are prepared to pay.

Im not really sure whether I would visit Luxor again but I would definitely visit Egypt again. Despite the warnings Ive mentioned, there really are nice people there and you will have a laugh if youre streetwise/assertive but respectful at the same time and know what you want to do when you get there. I would definitely stay in a Sonesta hotel again if there was one where I next go away.

Stayed here for one week on bed and breakfast basis in August. Service at this hotel is very good but ruined slightley by the miserable confused looking reception staff. Lovely dining area and good breakfast , the egg cook is such a nice young man!! I ate an english style breakfast which consisted of a burger type affair with peas and wedged potatoes!! I loved the weather it was HOT and i loved the blue sky every morning , all the trips were early , a 6.30 start normally . My only regret is we didnt book these trips independantly , we booked through Thomson's , I feel a lot of money couldve been saved if we had used the local travel agencies, although Thomsons were very good and the trips amazing! Our room was nice , clean comfortable bed, I was very pleased.
We had a side nile view , which yes you have a view of the nile when you look to your left but you look down to see a building site/ sewage works type of thing going on and you couldnt swing a cat on the balcony. The local builders used to look up and wave !! It didnt really effect the holiday at all though. The left side of the hotel there was construction of a swimming pool going on and people staying on this side got a worse deal than us i have been told!! So the best view would be nile / pool view !!
You step out of hotel only to be HASSLED like mad to buy something or have a trip on a KALESH!! We did go on a kalesh and asked to be taken to Luxor temple only to be taken to the local market and pressured to buy something there! We drank a great Luxor lager at Murphy's bar , very good and nice bar type food there, and also ate regularly at The Latern owned by a lady the reminded me of Bet Lynch !! She was a lovely lady and the food is very good , also Snobs is very good although they dont sell alcohol. Everywhere you went staff expected a tip which was fine, but its the constant hassling from the locals for you to buy something that grates a bit after a while!! One shop owner shouted at us did we want to come at look at his egyption crap and egyption rubbish !! he was funny and we did buy something although you have to haggle all the time!!
My partner and I tried the Cloepratra massage at the spa in the hotel , now here we have a selection of extemely bored young lady attendants that usher you into the steam room etc , I could see one of the girls asleep from where i sat !! Anyway that was just a blip compared to everything else which was amazing and I loved the weather, and all in all liked the hotel and we will be going to Egypt again because its such a fasinating place you wont be disapointed!! There was a hotel up the road from us thats really really nice so we may try there if we stay in Luxor again !!

We spent a week at the Sonesta Hotel after a week on the Sonesta St George boat cruising to Aswan and back. The cruise boat was most definitely 5 star in every way, from the rooms to the service to the food and overall decor. However, the Sonesta Hotel is a reasonable 4 star and no more. I am sure there must be better hotels in Luxor and if we go again we'll try the Steigenberger which is only a few yards away.

Positives:
- service at breakfast and around the pool
- breakfast: lots of options
- room: a reasonable size and comfortable bed
- location: lots of good restaurants within walking distance (our favourite was Jewel of the Nile though we also liked Snobs and King Tut); only 10EP to get a caleche or taxiinto the centre of Luxor

Negatives:
- reception (unsmiling and not good at their job)
- prices (5 star prices but in a 4 star hotel)
- room decor (fairly plain)
- balcony (too small)
- view (side Nile view is mainly of a building site; if a view is important you need a room over the pool)

We recently booked into Sonesta St. George for one night. After being greeted and checked-in efficently, we went to our room. Delightful, especially for Egypt.
Although we had alternate arrangements, we were so happy with this hotel that we booked in for another 7 nights. We were not dissappointed in any way.
As we are hotel owners and operators in Australia, the little things that others may not notice come to our attention. This hotel IS THE BEST RUN AND BEST VALUE FOR MONEY that we stayed in during 5 weeks in Egypt. Congratulations Mr Phillip on the excellent standard of your hotel and the wonderful [and trained] staff you employ in all areas of the hotel.
We had a room with a side Nile view. it was spectacular to just sit and watch the river and the sunset.
As for construction noise, the hotel appears to be finished, but work is going on next door. We believe this is to be part of the hotel and will only make it even better. Our balcony overlooked the work but did not cause us any distress, only interest watching them work.
Loved Luxor and would return to the Sonesta. If considering a Nile Cruise look at Sonesta St. Geoge as this ship is ran by the same management.
